The rationale for the introduction of implant dentistry into the dental curriculum.

This paper provides arguments for the introduction of implant dentistry into the undergraduate curriculum. The survival of teeth is very high when disease is diagnosed and treated properly and maintenance is taken care of. Nevertheless, tooth replacements by fixed and removable prostheses are highly prevalent. It is expected that dentists will face a dramatically increased need to care for elderly patients and partially edentulous patients. Hence, the demand for implant reconstructions will be substantial and more appropriately trained and competent health professionals will be needed. Increas…

Building a competency-based curriculum: the agony and the ecstasy.

Physician competencies have increasingly been a focus of medical education at all levels. Although competencies are not a new concept, when the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) jointly agreed on six competencies for certification and maintenance of certification of physicians in 1999, it brought about renewed interest. This article gives a brief overview of how a competency-based curriculum differs from other approaches and then describes the issues that need to be considered in the design and implementation of su…

Evaluating a school-based trachoma curriculum in Tanzania.

Trachoma remains a public health problem in a number of sub-Saharan Africa countries; behavioral change and environmental improvements are c … ed indices by primary schoolchildren in the intervention villages. The teachers viewed the trachoma curriculum positively but reported that the lack of water at the schools limited application of the health education messages. The disparity between health education messages and environmental capacities for implementing these messages (no wells at the schools …

Understanding teachers' curriculum leadership: a field-mediator mechanism.

Curriculum leadership is central to curriculum reform in basic education and to the cultivation of students' core competencies. This study adopts a basic qualitative approach to examine how teachers in a centralized Asian context develop curriculum leadership. Data were collected from 21 secondary school teachers in three schools in Yantai, China. The findings indicate a field-mediator mechanism through which field factors and psychological mediators interact to shape teachers' aspirations for curriculum leadership and support the enactment of those aspirations in practice. The study further s…

Hematologic Considerations in Kidney Transplantation: Core Curriculum 2025.

Hematologic abnormalities including both cytopenias and cytoses are the rule rather than the exception in the first year after kidney transplantation, yet many are benign reflections of immunosuppression, infection prophylaxis, or residual chronic kidney disease. In this Core Curriculum, we distill the evidence on the disorders clinicians encounter most often, cytopenias including neutropenia, lymphopenia, anemia, thrombocytopenia, and thrombotic microangiopathy, as well as cytoses including eosinophilia, lymphocytosis, erythrocytosis, and thrombocytosis. Each is framed by typical timing, domi…

Quality Improvement Curriculum for Intensive Care Unit Upgrades.

Patients admitted to the hospital ward from the emergency department (ED) occasionally decompensate and require transfer to the intensive care unit (ICU). An emergency medicine (EM) curriculum focused on review of these ICU upgrade cases could improve resident knowledge related to patient acuity, critical illness, and appropriate disposition. Furthermore, initial identification of critical pathology in the ED and earlier admission to the ICU could reduce delays in care and improve patient outcomes. We performed a retrospective analysis to determine the effectiveness of a resident quality impro…

Development of an Integrated 6-Year Preventive Medicine Curriculum for Medical Students in Korea: An Expert-informed Deliberative Curriculum Development Study.

In Korea, preventive medicine education has remained fragmented across the undergraduate curriculum, with limited longitudinal continuity and increasing pressure to incorporate population health, healthcare systems, community practice, planetary health, and digital health. This study aimed to develop an integrated 6-year preventive medicine curriculum for medical students that would support health promotion, disease prevention, and social accountability at the individual and population levels. We conducted an expert-informed deliberative curriculum development study framed by Walker's delibera…

A structured histotechnology curriculum for Mohs micrographic surgery trainees.

BACKGROUND: Mohs micrographic surgery achieves high cure rates for skin cancer through immediate histopathologic evaluation of frozen sections, yet histotechnology training for Mohs fellows varies widely across programs and is often learned informally during routine clinical care. This article describes the development and implementation of a structured, competency-based histotechnology curriculum for Mohs surgery trainees. METHODS: We developed a modular laboratory training curriculum incorporating focused didactic instruction, supervised hands-on laboratory experience, and checklist-based c…

Diagnostic instruments in extended curriculum programs: a scoping review.

This study maps and synthesizes the existing body of literature on diagnostic tools and tests used within extended curriculum programs (ECPs) in higher education. Diagnostic assessment plays an important role in informing admission, placement, and early academic support within ECPs. The evidence based on the types, uses, and quality of diagnostic instruments, particularly within the South African higher education system, remains fragmented. This scoping review was conducted in accordance with the Arksey and O'Malley framework, as refined by Levac et al. (Levac D, Colquhoun H, O'Brien KK. Imple…

Robotic curriculum and development strategies in robotic abdominal surgery.

BACKGROUND: The rapid adoption of robotic abdominal surgery has necessitated structured training programs to ensure surgeon competence and patient safety. The da Vinci TR 100-200-300-400-500 training system represents a comprehensive pathway for developing robotic surgical skills, yet its effectiveness on learning curves remains incompletely characterized. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines, searching PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases from inception to October 2025. Studies evaluating learning curves associated with the TR training system in robotic ab

Pediatric residents' perceptions of eye care curriculum and training.

To understand the perspectives of pediatric residents regarding their ophthalmic training, an anonymous 17-question survey was administered to pediatric residents at five large, geographically diverse US programs. Participants' levels of agreement with statements addressing their confidence in providing eye care, knowledge about managing common eye problems, and satisfaction with ophthalmic curricula were collated and assessed. Of 173 respondents, 91% were not confident performing instrument-based vision screening, and less than half felt confident using a wall chart to test visual acuity. Sev

Need for Pandemic Preparedness Teaching during the Medical Curriculum.

When we talk about 20-20 it goes without saying that we are talking about Indian Premier League matches. But when we talk about 2020, we get goosebumps even remembering the memories of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic! It was just about that time when the National Medical Commission (NMC) rolled out the Competency-based Medical Education (CBME) curriculum for the first Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) batch admitted in the 2019-2020 academic year. Who knew that the timetable so well planned would go for a toss due to the global pandemic? It was indeed a learning…
