Unprecedented tropical cyclone in temperate-boreal ecotone drives declines in emergent conifers and canopy complexity.

Poleward shifts in tropical cyclone (TC) activity have introduced unprecedented disturbances to Northeast Asia's boreal and temperate-boreal ecotone forests. As TCs migrate northward, they increasingly influence previously unaffected regions, yet their impacts on forest structure and species composition remain poorly understood. This study examines TC Maysak (2020), the most intense cyclone recorded in the ecotone forests near the Chinese-Russian border, and its effects on tree vulnerability and canopy structure. Using high-resolution drone-based orthophotographs, we analyzed fallen tree dimen

Tropical cyclone FANTALA's three turnbacks in the northeast of Madagascar Island.

The unique Tropical cyclone (TC) Fantala appeared in the central Indian Ocean (12.4°S, 73.5°E) at 00Z on April 11 in 2016 and moved northwestward along the northeast of Madagascar at 18 Z on April 15. Then, two incomprehensible turnbacks formed a unique TC track. The dynamic mechanisms of the three turnbacks were first studied based on remote sensing and multisource reanalysis data. The results reveal that the wind field with upper divergence and lower convergence promotes the development of Fantala. The anticyclone high pressure on the middle level atmosphere is an important factor for TC tur

Forest dynamics where typhoon winds blow.

Tropical cyclones (TCs) sporadically cause extensive damage to forests. However, little is known about how TCs affect forest dynamics in mountainous terrain, due to difficulties in modelling wind flows and quantifying structural changes. Typhoon Mangkhut (2018) was the strongest TC to strike Hong Kong in over 40 yr, with gusts > 250 km h-1. Remarkably, the event was captured by a dense anemometer network and repeated LiDAR surveys across natural forests and plantations. We mapped long-term mean and extreme wind speeds using CFD models and analysed corresponding changes in canopy height, which

Climate Justice Implications of Natech Disasters: Excess Contaminant Releases during Hurricanes on the Texas Gulf Coast.

Extreme weather events are becoming more severe due to climate change, increasing the risk of contaminant releases from hazardous sites disproportionately located in low-income communities of color. We evaluated contaminant releases during Hurricanes Rita, Ike, and Harvey in Texas and used regression models to estimate associations between neighborhood racial/ethnic composition and residential proximity to hurricane-related contaminant releases. Two-to-three times as many excess releases were reported during hurricanes compared to business-as-usual periods. Petrochemical manufacturing and refi

Adaptation of coastal defence structure as a mechanism to alleviate coastal erosion in monsoon dominated coast of Peninsular Malaysia.

The complexity of the coastal environment and the advent of climate change cause coastal erosion, which is incontrovertibly a significant concern worldwide, including Peninsular Malaysia, where, the coast is threatened by severe erosion linked to anthropogenic factors and monsoonal wind-driven waves. Consequently, the Malaysian government implemented a mitigation plan using several coastal defence systems to overcome the coastal erosion problem. This study assesses coastal erosion management strategies along a monsoon-dominated coasts by evaluating the efficacy of coastal protection structures

Seasonal variability of modern benthic foraminifera assemblages in a mangrove ecosystem from northeast coastal Bay of Bengal.

Benthic foraminifera assemblages, nutrient dynamics of surface and porewater from 10 intertidal sites spanning over two years (2019-2020) covering two major estuaries in Sundarbans mangrove were evaluated to understand role of seasonal precipitation and primary production (driven by eddy nutrients) with a focus on standing crop. Benthic foraminifera abundance ranged between 280 individuals/10 cc in pre-monsoon (2019), 415 individuals/10 cc in post-monsoon 2019 and 630 individuals/10 cc in post-monsoon (2020). Standing crop was highest in post-monsoon coinciding with eddy nutrients driven stoic

How accurate are infrared-only and rain gauge-adjusted multi-satellite precipitation products in the southwest monsoon precipitation estimation across India?

A dense network of rain gauges and considerably large variability of the southwest monsoon precipitation across the country make India a suitable test-bed to evaluate any satellite-based precipitation product. In this paper, three real-time infrared-only precipitation products derived from the INSAT-3D satellite namely, INSAT Multispectral Rainfall (IMR), Corrected IMR (IMC) and Hydro-Estimator (HEM) and three rain gauge-adjusted Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM)-based multi-satellite precipitation products namely, Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for GPM (IMERG), Global Satellite Ma

Prediction of cost and schedule performance in post-hurricane reconstruction of transportation infrastructure.

This study aimed to develop predictive models that could be used to estimate the cost and schedule performance of reconstruction of transportation infrastructure damaged by hurricanes and to determine the predictors that are robustly connected to the developed models. Stepwise multiple linear regression and extreme bound analysis (EBA) were used to develop the models and determine the robust and fragile predictors, respectively. The results demonstrated that seven cost performance predictors and nine schedule performance predictors accounted for Adjusted R-Squared of 92.4% and 99.2%, respectiv

Effects of typhoon and upwelling on Chlorophyll-a distribution in the northeastern coast of Hainan during Summer.

Typhoons or upwelling are thought to promote higher phytoplankton chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration in many previous studies. However, the combined effects of typhoons and upwelling have been less studied in the South China Sea. Based on satellite remote sensing data, we investigated potential contributions of temperature-characterizing upwelling and typhoon events to Chl-a changes in the Hainan northeast area. Results showed that the Chl-a concentration was 0.80 mg m-3 at the coastal upwelling index (CUI) of 1.7°C in the summer of 2020 when there were no typhoons crossing the area. The CUI

The Precedent set by Unprecedented Rainfall: Lessons to be Learnt From Disastrous Flooding in Pakistan.

Pakistan has suffered heavy losses due to the torrential monsoon rains of 2022. With obliterated infrastructure and rising disease burden, the nation is still reeling from the dismal aftermath. It is critical to understand that such catastrophes are not a 1-time calamity but are likely to become more frequent with growing severity of the climate crisis. These losses point to a more systemic problem that is a lack of preparedness, and without sustainable long-term measures in place, the nation remains just as vulnerable to the next 'unpredictable' weather contingency. Prior planning and effecti

Floating Debris in the Northern Gulf of Mexico after Hurricane Katrina.

Hurricane Katrina (category 5 with maximum wind of 280 km/h when the eye is in the central Gulf of Mexico) made landfall near New Orleans on August 29, 2005, causing millions of cubic meters of disaster debris, severe flooding, and US$125 billion in damage. Yet, despite numerous reports on its environmental and economic impacts, little is known about how much debris has entered the marine environment. Here, using satellite images (MODIS, MERIS, and Landsat), airborne photographs, and imaging spectroscopy, we show the distribution, possible types, and amount of Katrina-induced debris in the nor

Cyclone: an accessible pipeline to analyze, evaluate, and optimize multiparametric cytometry data.

In the past decade, high-dimensional single-cell technologies have revolutionized basic and translational immunology research and are now a key element of the toolbox used by scientists to study the immune system. However, analysis of the data generated by these approaches often requires clustering algorithms and dimensionality reduction representation, which are computationally intense and difficult to evaluate and optimize. Here, we present Cytometry Clustering Optimization and Evaluation (Cyclone), an analysis pipeline integrating dimensionality reduction, clustering, evaluation, and optimi

Trend analysis of dependence between rainfall and storm tides in coastal cities.

Compound flooding from rainfall and storm tides is prone to occur in coastal cities. The identification of them is essential for controlling urban flooding. First, the dependence between rainfall and storm tides is quantified by Kendall's τ, Spearman's ρ, and tail dependence coefficient. Then, a bivariate copula-based probability distribution model is built to calculate the joint and conditional probability of rainfall and storm tides. Finally, MK and SQMK methods are employed to detect the trends of the dependence and joint probability. The results show that: (1) The dependence between strong

Meta-analyses of motivational factors of response to natural disaster.

Response behavior of individuals is of critical importance to decrease chances of injury and death as well as ameliorate costs in property and infrastructure damage in natural disasters. Plenty of studies have examined which factors motivate individuals to respond to natural disasters. However, a systematic overview of the key motivating factors of various response behaviors is lacking. This study conducts a series of meta-analyses using data of 53,713 samples from 87 studies (77 papers) conducted in 27 different countries and regions to examine how 17 motivational factors were associated with

Protistan community composition and metabolism in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre: Influences of mesoscale eddies and depth.

Marine protists and their metabolic activities are intricately tied to the cycling of nutrients and the flow of energy through microbial food webs. Physiochemical changes in the environment, such as those that result from mesoscale eddies, may impact protistan communities, but the effects that such changes have on protists are poorly known. A metatranscriptomic study was conducted to investigate how eddies affected protists at adjacent cyclonic and anticyclonic eddy sites in the oligotrophic ocean at four depths from 25 to 250 m. Eddy polarity impacted protists at all depths sampled, although

Transport patterns and hydrodynamic context of the MERITE-HIPPOCAMPE cruise: Implications for contaminants distribution and origin.

This study aims at characterizing the hydrodynamic context and transport patterns that prevailed during the MERITE-HIPPOCAMPE cruise to assist in the interpretation of in-situ observations. The main physical attributes and structures (mesoscale eddies as well as fine-scale fronts and filaments) are analyzed based on various physical diagnostics. They were computed from satellite data and data-assimilative model outputs to describe ocean dynamics. The Northern and Algerian Currents were prominent features during the cruise while the western basin is divided by the vertically-tilted Balearic fro

Analysis of meteorological variables interaction associated with the environment of formation of Amazonian squall lines.

The relationships among humidity, air temperature, wind, and vertical velocity with formation and propagation of Amazonian squall lines (ASL) is analyzed in this study. One year of data (2005) is verified by counting ASL cases according to their classification (propagated and non-propagated) to understand more clearly how the variation of these variables over this year influences their environment of formation. The results show an increase in humidity on days with ASL, with the highest occurrence during the wettest months. Furthermore, system propagation toward the interior of continent seems
