Disseminated cysticercosis.

Cysticercosis is a common public health problem in the Tropics. However, disseminated cysticercosis is rare. We report a patient with chronic liver disease and seizures, in whom a simple plain radiographic examination helped in narrowing down the differential diagnosis to disseminated cysticercosis. The diagnosis was confirmed by serum cysticercal antibody enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and computerized tomography of the brain.

Oral cysticercosis.

Cysticercosis is the result of infection with the larval stage of the tapeworm, Taenia solium. The parasite may settle at any site in the body without causing symptoms, which arise almost exclusively from the involvement of brain or eye, and this may occur several years after infection. Cysticercosis is one of the leading causes of acquired epilepsy in Latin America, parts of Asia, and Africa. More cases are being reported in other countries as a result of immigration from endemic areas. Cysticercosis may cause cystic swellings or nodules in the mouth, and these may be the only evidence of the…

Tumoural cysticercosis.

The unusual occurrence of very large cysticerci presenting as tumour-like lesions prompted this search of the pathology records of a south Indian hospital, to find similar cases. The maximum diameter of 187 consecutively diagnosed extraneural cysticerci, was recorded and those cases exceeding the mean by two standard deviations reviewed. Six biopsies showing cysticerci with a maximum diameter ranging from 4 to 11 cm, were identified, and hospital records and all pathological material available, were reexamined. The clinical differential diagnosis included benign and malignant tumours, hydatid

Subretinal cysticercosis.

BACKGROUND: [corrected] Cysticercosis is a parasitic infestation of different body organs by Cysticercosis cellulosae, a larval form of the helminth, Taenia solium, known commonly as pork tapeworm. Ocular involvement of cysticercosis is most common. Other sites of infestation include the central nervous system, subcutaneous tissue, skeletal muscles, and heart muscle. Patients with ocular cysticercosis may be asymptomatic or suffer mild to severe vision loss. CASE REPORT: A patient presented with painless vision loss secondary to a parasitic infection by presumed subretinal cysticercosis. The …

Orbital cysticercosis.

BACKGROUND: We report on a case of orbital cysticercosis in a 27-year-old Burmese man who presented with an orbital swelling 7 months after arriving in Australia. METHODS: The presenting history and findings are reviewed and treatment options are discussed. A brief review of the life cycle of the tapeworm Taenia solium is provided. RESULTS: The orbital lesion was successfully treated by surgical excision. CONCLUSION: Cysticercosis should not be forgotten as a possible cause of unusual orbital lesions.

Intravitreal cysticercosis.

Examination of a 36-year-old man with naked visual acuity of 20/20 revealed a floating, conspicuous cyst of Cysticercus cellulosae in the vitreous cavity of the right eye. A vitreous traction band from the vitreous base and the optic disc was connected to the lodging bulb of the cyst. In the superonasal area, an ovoid retinal break surrounded by a white retinal lesion with two elliptical retinal hemorrhages was found, and this seems to be the previous lodging site of the cyst. A pars plana vitrectomy was performed to remove the parasite, and laser photocoagulation was carried out around the re

Oral cysticercosis.

Although cysticercosis is a common disease in developing countries, oral lesions produced by this parasitic infestation are rare. In this report we document a case of oral cysticercosis in a 7-year-old girl who sought treatment for an asymptomatic nodule of the left buccal mucosa that had been clinically diagnosed as a mucocele.

[Ocular cysticercosis].

Ocular cysticercosis results from development of Taenia solium larvae, Cysticercus cellulosae, in the eye. This condition is observed all over the world but is particularly common in developing countries. The eye, like nervous system and muscle tissue, is a prime location for parasitic development because of its rich vascularization. Intraorbital cysticercosis accounts for 75 to 85% of cases and if untreated leads to blindness. Intravitreal involvement is the most common followed by subretinal involvement. Involvement of other structures such as the camera aqueosa, iris, and crystalline lens i…

Cerebral cysticercosis.

We studied 143 cases of cerebral cysticercosis over a 30-year period. In 46 there was hydrocephalus due to cysts obstructing the cerebrospinal fluid pathways, with signs of hydrocephalus and cerebellar dysfunction. In 97 there were cysts in the cerebral parenchyma, causing symptoms of intracranial hypertension alone in 22 cases, with additional neurological deficits in the remainder. Before 1980 diagnosis was made by pneumoencephalography and ventriculography, but since then it has mostly been done by computed tomography. In 28 cases scanned, typical abnormalities were present in 25. Complemen…

[Subretinal cysticercosis].

This paper communicates the history of a case of subretinal cysticercosis in the left eye of a 73-year-old female patient. The only subjective complaints were slightly blurred vision in the affected eye. Serological findings in the blood (Agar-Gel precipitation; IFAT; ELISA) and the aqueous humor were negative. However, according to the literature false-negative serological findings are not uncommon. A stool examination for worm eggs or tapeworm segments was also negative. The remaining lab findings, including hemogram and immunoelectrophoresis, were also normal. Neurocysticercosis was ruled o…

Cerebral cysticercosis.

Cerebral cysticercosis is the result of infestation of the brain with the larval stage of the intestinal tape worm Taenia Solium. The disease, endemic in some parts of the world, especially Mexico, South America, India, Eastern Europe, is still encountered practically all over the world. There appear to be distinct geographical variations not only in the incidence but also the pattern of the disease. The commonly accepted modes of infection do not stand a critical analysis of available epidemiological data. The brain is a site of predilection for this infestation, where it results in meningeal…

CNS cysticercosis.

Worldwide, cysticercosis is the most common CNS parasite. Because of immigration from endemic areas, cysticercosis has become more common in the United States. Seventeen cases have been seen at the University of California Medical Center, San Diego (La Jolla) over the last ten years. Eight patients had intracranial hypertension; three, seizures; three, intracranial hypertension; and seizures; two, strokes; and one, retinal involvement. Diagnosis was by surgical biopsy in five cases and by clinical setting plus positive serologic findings in 12. Twelve patients underwent surgical procedures dur…
