Ketamine-snorting associated cystitis.

Ketamine hydrochloride, commonly used as a pediatric anesthetic agent, is an N-methyl-D-aspartic (NMDA) acid receptor antagonist with rapid … users were reported since Shahani et al first reported nine cases of ketamine-associated ulcerative cystitis in 2007. We report on four patients who had history of ketamine abuse, presenting with dysuria, fluctuating lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), lower abdominal or perineal pain, and impaired functional bladder capacities. Urinalysis showed pyuria a …

[Antibiotic-induced hemorrhagic cystitis].

Two cases of haemorrhagic cystitis following treatment with methicillin and penicillin G are presented. Two males, aged 24 and 45 years, presented identical symptoms including haematuria, dysuria and pollakisuria. The condition has in rare instances been described as caused by antibiotic treatment; in all cases a penicillin was involved. All symptoms promptly vanished when the antibiotic treatment was stopped, and the reactions were possibly allergic since cross-reactions between different penicillins have been described in earlier cases.

Eosinophilic cystitis: CT findings.

Eosinophilic cystitis (EC) is a rare form of bladder inflammation of uncertain etiology, characterized by eosinophilic inflammation of the bladder. Presenting clinical symptoms include hematuria, dysuria, frequency, and suprapubic pain. To our knowledge, there have been only two other reports of computed tomographic (CT) scan findings of EC. In both cases, the findings were thought to represent invasive bladder cancer. We present a case report of biopsy-proven EC with previously unreported CT scan findings.

Eosinophilic cystitis: pleomorphic manifestations.

Because eosinophilic cystitis is rare, the authors present two cases of this inflammatory condition. In one, eosinophilic ureteritis presented as ureteral obstruction; this is only the second such case to be reported. The literature on eosinophilic cystitis is reviewed. The condition affects people of all ages and its cause is unknown. The clinical presentation varies, but hematuria is a constant feature with urinary frequency and dysuria being common. Management is also variable, ranging from treatment for symptoms only to aggressive surgical therapy.

[Interstitial cystitis. Current aspects].

Fifty-five cases of interstitial cystitis are reported, symptomatology in these 43 women and 12 men being of a severe nature: diurnal and nocturnal pollakiuria, supra-pubic pain. Disorders were always permanent and had been present for at least 6 months, diagnosis being confirmed by endoscopy. Initial bladder filling demonstrated the most important lesions (Hunner's ulcer) and allowed determination of bladder capacity. Decompression and a repeat vesical repletion showed mucosal hemorrhagic spots, establishing the diagnosis of interstitial cystitis. Biopsy forceps were used to obtain fragments …

Interstitial cystitis intravesical therapy.

Interstitial cystitis (IC) is a progressive bladder disorder that presents with symptoms of bladder urgency, frequency and pain. The aetiology of the disease remains uncertain, but it is postulated that there is an initial infective insult which damages the glycosaminoglycan (GAG) layer of the bladder urothelium. This defect allows an influx of ions, particularly potassium, which initiates an inflammatory reaction in the bladder wall, which incites the symptoms described above. Treatment initially involves behavioural and oral medication, with second line being intravesical instillation therap…

[Case report : Emphysematous cystitis].

The emphysematous cystitis is a rare condition characterized by the presence of air in the wall and/or the bladder lumen. The clinical expression of this cystitis is variable. Some patients complain of abdominal pain or urinary symptoms. Other may present only pneumaturia or be totally asymptomatic. This condition is considered as potentially severe since it can lead to an emphysematous pyelonephritis with septicemia and septic shock. Peritonitis may also occur in case of necrosis and perforation of the bladder wall. However, this negative development can be avoided by a diagnosis and an early…

Radiation-induced hemorrhagic cystitis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To better understand the mechanism of radiation-induced hemorrhagic cystitis and the advantages and disadvantages of available treatment options for bladder hemorrhage as well as preventive measures. RECENT FINDINGS: There have been several attempts recently to manage hemorrhagic cystitis with hyperbaric oxygen therapy, transurethral coagulation using Greenlight potassium-titanyl-phosphate laser and other different treatment modalities, but we still need more investigation on larger cohort studies. SUMMARY: Hemorrhagic cystitis is an uncommon urological problem. It is most…

[Emphysematous cystitis: case report].

OBJECTIVE: To report one case of emphysematous cystitis and to review its diagnosis and treatment in the related literature. METHOD: We report the case of a type II diabetic 91-year-old woman with jaundice, hematuria, vomits, abdominal pain and poor glycemia control. Diagnosis was obtained by plain abdominal X-ray and ultrasonography, and confirmed by CT. E.coli was isolated in urinary culture. RESULTS: Antibiotic intravenous therapy with piperacillin-tazo-bactam, urinary bladder catheterization and strict glycemia control. The patient was discharged from hospital on day 5, with 14 additiona…

Re-imagining interstitial cystitis.

Since the postulation of an "antiproliferative factor" in 1998 and a description, six years later, of this putative central protein in the etiologic pathway of the painful bladder syndrome/interstitial cystitis, there have been no dramatic breakthroughs in the field. Although much potentially exciting work is in progress with regard to epidemiology, etiology, and clinical treatment, many clinicians and researchers have used this hiatus to take another look at what exactly is being studied and how the syndrome should be approached. This article explores some of the current "hot-button" issues o…

[Cystitis emphysematosa (author's transl)].

Two cases of cystitis emphysematosa are described and the literature is reviewed. The aetiology, course and diagnosis are discussed, the radiological appearances being of particular importance. The cystoscopic and laboratory findings are mentioned. Cystitis emphysematosa is analogous to other conditions which cause gas to collect in abdominal organs and has similar aetiological factors.

Urinary Microbiome Characteristics in Female Patients with Acute Uncomplicated Cystitis and Recurrent Cystitis.

Traditionally, the diagnostic mainstay of recurrent urinary tract infection has been urinary culture. However, the causative uropathogen of recurrent cystitis has not been well established. Urine DNA next-generation sequencing (NGS) can provide additional information on these infections. Herein, we compared urine NGS results and urine cultures in patients with acute uncomplicated cystitis (AUC) and recurrent cystitis (RC), and evaluated the difference in microbiome patterns in the NGS results. Patients who underwent urine culture and NGS due to AUC or RC were retrospectively reviewed. All urin…
