Extraction of urethral calculi by transabdominal cystoscopy and urethroscopy in nine dogs.

OBJECTIVES: To describe a minimally invasive technique for treating urethral obstructions in male dogs and to review the postoperative results. METHODS: All dogs (n=9) had urethral obstruction due to calculi. Obstructions were verified by radiographic and ultrasonographic examinations. Dogs with impaired kidney function were not included in the study. A 5-mm diameter trocar and cannula were placed in the ventral midline, 2 cm cranial to the umbilicus, allowing placement of a 10-mm diameter cannula under visual guidance, adjacent to the apex of the bladder. The bladder was then partially exter

Two centuries of cystoscopy: the development of imaging, instrumentation and synergistic technologies.

The cystoscope used today is the product of centuries of development. The desire to view the cavities of the body was first described several centuries ago. The earliest true prototype was Bozinni's 1805 urethral viewing tube, on which many others were based. These primitive instruments were challenging to use for the operator, uncomfortable for the patient, and dangerous for both. Patient positioning was based on the method of bladder distension and the goal of the operation, rather than comfort. Images visualized by early models were inverted and backwards, and required the operator to be sk

Accuracy of cystoscopy in the diagnosis of ureteral injury in benign gynecologic surgery.

Our objective was to review our experience and attempt to identify risk factors for ureteral injury during gynecologic surgery for benign conditions. A retrospective chart review was performed of all cases of ureteral injury during gynecologic surgery for benign conditions, at Temple University Hospital, from January 1992 to September 2002. We analyzed hospital records to determine whether the injury was diagnosed intraoperatively, with postprocedure cystoscopy, or if cystoscopy was ineffective in diagnosing the injury. There were nine ureteral injuries during the study period. Of these, two w

In-utero percutaneous cystoscopy in the management of fetal lower obstructive uropathy.

In fetuses with lower obstructive uropathy, sonography cannot establish the cause of obstruction. We assessed whether percutaneous fetal cystoscopy could be useful in the evaluation and treatment of obstructive defects in utero. We inserted a fibreoptic endoscope through the lumen of the needle or trocar into the fetal bladder at the time of vesicocentesis or vesicoamniotic-shunt placement and looked at the the urethra, bladder neck, and ureteral orifices. Urethral vesicoamniotic shunting was considered in suitable cases; otherwise a percutaneous shunt was inserted. Fetal cystoscopy was possib

Reducing Clinical Waste in Flexible Cystoscopy: A Prospective Quality Improvement Study.

AIMS: Flexible cystoscopy is a very common procedure that relies heavily on single-use consumables, resulting in significant procedural waste. This study aimed to evaluate whether a targeted waste-segregation intervention could reduce clinical waste generation during flexible cystoscopy without compromising clinical practice. METHODS: A prospective audit of 50 consecutive diagnostic flexible cystoscopies performed at a tertiary urology centre was undertaken. Twenty-five procedures were evaluated before intervention, followed by structured contamination-based waste segregation training for cli

Bacteriuria After Diagnostic Flexible Cystoscopy Without Antibiotic Prophylaxis: A Prospective Study.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Flexible cystoscopy is well tolerated by women. Reprocessing of cystoscopes requires sterilization or, at least, high-level disinfection (HLD). This study aims to assess the incidence of bacteriuria after flexible cystoscopy using ortho-phthalaldehyde HLD. METHODS: This is a prospective study. Seventy-eight women undergoing diagnostic outpatient flexible cystoscopy were included. Exclusion criteria were microbiologically confirmed or acute urinary tract infection, significant urethral stricture, and bleeding disorders. Cystoscopes were reprocessed using ortho-phth

Efficiency and Diagnostic Utility of CO2 Cystoscopy After Laparoscopic Gynecologic Surgery.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to compare the efficiency and diagnostic performance of carbon dioxide (CO2) versus saline as a distension medium during routine cystoscopy performed after laparoscopic gynecologic surgery. METHODS: We conducted a prospective, comparative study involving patients undergoing total laparoscopic hysterectomy for benign indications. Participants were randomly assigned to undergo diagnostic cystoscopy using either CO2 or saline for bladder distension. Primary outcomes included total cystoscopy duration and time to visualize bilateral ureteral jets. Secon

Managing Bladder-Neck Stenosis With "Cystoscopy and Proceed" Method: Our Experience.

INTRODUCTION: Bladder-neck stenosis (BNS) is characterized by obstruction of urine flow due to improper relaxation of the bladder neck. Accurate diagnosis through cystoscopy and treatment via bladder-neck incision (BNI) can restore urinary flow and reduce the risk of related complications. Our experience suggests that cystoscopy for diagnosis is underused due to various patient and physician-related factors. OBJECTIVE: The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the "cystoscopy and proceed" method in managing BNS, measured by improvement in uroflowmetry (Qmax). Se

Cystoscopy-assisted percutaneous removal of impacted urethral stone: a case report.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Although cystolitholapaxy is possible in children, the instruments are not available everywhere. For tiny impacted urethral stone, an alternate technique is described. CASE REPORT: A 3-year-old boy came with retention of urine and dysuria. On examination: bladder was full, suprapubic region was tender, and a stone could be felt at posterior urethra. We planned push back and suprapubic cystolithotomy. After general anesthesia, the stone was pushed back by instillation of lignocaine jelly into the urethra. Then, a cystoscope was introduced, and a stone was found inside t

Virtual cystoscopy by intravesical instillation of dilute contrast medium: preliminary experience.

PURPOSE: We determined whether virtual cystoscopy based on helical data sets can yield urinary capabilities similar to those achieved by fiber-optic cystoscopy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 11 patients with ultrasound detected bladder tumors underwent pelvic CT as a single volumetric scan after preliminary bladder distention with saline mixed with contrast medium using a 6Fr infant feeding tube. Cystoscopy was simulated based on a 3-dimensional helical CT data set in real time. Source raw CT data for virtual cystoscopy were reconstructed and navigation was done in real time using surface

Multiple intravesical linear staples identified during surveillance cystoscopy after laparoscopic nephroureterectomy.

Laparoscopic nephroureterectomy has faced technical criticism secondary to the unknown effects of urine-exposed intravesical or intraureteral staples. Although not reported, staples exposed to urine theoretically create a nidus for encrustation and stone formation. We present a case of a 66-year-old man after left laparoscopic ureterectomy for ureteral malignancy. Surveillance cystoscopy at 6 months revealed a nearly complete intravesical titanium staple line without encrustation. Successful transurethral removal of all staples with standard cystoscopic graspers revealed no immediate, or delay

Combined vaginoscopy-cystoscopy: a novel simultaneous approach improving vesicovaginal fistula evaluation.

PURPOSE: Using a device that permits simultaneous viewing on the same display (picture in picture) of 2 images we performed combined vaginoscopy-cystoscopy (CVC) during evaluation for vesicovaginal fistula as a means of better visualization, allowing more precise identification and better preoperative planning. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A regular cystoscope and a 10 mm 0-degree laparoscope were used. Each was attached to a different microcamera and light source. The cameras were hooked to the back of a Twinvideo (Karl Storz Endoscopy, Tuttlingen, Germany), allowing a wide variety of views combin

[Inflammatory pseudotumor of the urinary bladder diagnosed using 3D-CT cystoscopy].

Inflammatory pseudotumor of the urinary bladder is a rare benign entity of the submucosal stroma that can easily be mistaken for a malignant neoplasm both clinically and histologically. We report a case of an inflammatory pseudotumor of the urinary bladder in which 3D-CT cystoscopy aided in the diagnosis. A 38-year-old man presented with persistent miction pain, penile pain, and dysuria despite symptomatic treatment at another hospital. Cystoscopic examination, MRI and 3D-CT cystoscopy revealed a 3.0 X 3.0 cm wide-based nonpapillary tumor located at the anterior dome of the urinary bladder. Tr

Hexaminolevulinate blue light cystoscopy improves bladder cancer detection in comparison to white light cystoscopy: a prospective, comparative, within-patient controlled multicenter phase III bridging study in China.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: To compare hexaminolevulinate (HAL) blue light cystoscopy (BLC) with white light cystoscopy (WLC) in the detection of bladder cancer. METHODS: Patients received intravesical HAL (Hexvix®) and underwent WLC before randomization to undergo high-definition BLC (System blue). Lesions identified in either WLC or BLC were evaluated by a blinded panel. The primary efficacy endpoint was the proportion of patients with histology-confirmed tumors (Ta, T1, or CIS) and with at least one such tumor found by BLC but not by WLC. The secondary endpoints included the detection of CIS

Green Cystoscopy: Does Minimizing the Use of Drapes Increase Infection Rates?

IMPORTANCE: The U.S. health care system has an enormous carbon footprint made worse by the escalating use of single-use supplies. Emerging evidence suggests that smaller surgical fields ("green" draping) may represent a safe alternative to traditional draping. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to determine if the proportion of cases treated for culture-proven urinary tract infection (UTI) within 2 weeks of operating room cystoscopy after the green draping protocol implementation is noninferior to preprotocol cases. Secondary objectives included risk factors for UTI and waste and cost savin

Intraoperative cystoscopy for urinary tract complications during robotic gynecological hysterectomy surgery.

The effectiveness of cystoscopy in reducing urinary tract complications during robotic gynecologic surgery is poorly documented. Since the introduction of robotic surgery at our institution, cystoscopy has been consistently employed as a standard practice, and its usefulness was investigated. This retrospective study evaluated the utility of routine cystoscopy in patients who underwent robotic surgery between February 2017 and April 2024. The outcome was the detection rate of bladder and ureteral complications. Indigo carmine was injected intravenously while suturing the post-hysterectomy vagi

Antimicrobial agents for preventing urinary tract infections in adults undergoing cystoscopy.

BACKGROUND: Cystoscopy is commonly performed for diagnostic purposes to inspect the interior lining of the bladder. One disadvantage of cystoscopy is the risk of symptomatic urinary tract infection (UTI) due to pre-existing colonization or by introduction of bacteria at the time of the procedure. However, the incidence of symptomatic UTI following cystoscopy is low. Currently, there is no consensus on whether antimicrobial agents should be used to prevent symptomatic UTI for cystoscopy. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of antimicrobial agents compared with placebo or no treatment for prevent
