Clinical prediction of thrombectomy eligibility: A systematic review and 4-item decision tree.

BACKGROUND: A clinical large anterior vessel occlusion (LAVO)-prediction scale could reduce treatment delays by allocating intra-arterial thrombectomy (IAT)-eligible patients directly to a comprehensive stroke center. AIM: To subtract, validate and compare existing LAVO-prediction scales, and develop a straightforward decision support tool to assess IAT-eligibility. METHODS: We performed a systematic literature search to identify LAVO-prediction scales. Performance was compared in a prospective, multicenter validation cohort of the Dutch acute Stroke study (DUST) by calculating area under th

Determining Optimal Route of Hysterectomy for Benign Indications: Clinical Decision Tree Algorithm.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate practice change after initiation of a robotic surgery program using a clinical algorithm to determine the optimal surgical approach to benign hysterectomy. METHODS: A retrospective postrobot cohort of benign hysterectomies (2009-2013) was identified and the expected surgical route was determined from an algorithm using vaginal access and uterine size as decision tree branches. We excluded the laparoscopic hysterectomy route. A prerobot cohort (2004-2005) was used to evaluate a practice change after the addition of robotic technology (2007). Costs were estimated. RESULT

Construction and validation of a decision tree for treating metabolic acidosis in calves with neonatal diarrhea.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the present prospective study was to investigate whether a decision tree based on basic clinical signs could be used to determine the treatment of metabolic acidosis in calves successfully without expensive laboratory equipment. A total of 121 calves with a diagnosis of neonatal diarrhea admitted to a veterinary teaching hospital were included in the study. The dosages of sodium bicarbonate administered followed simple guidelines based on the results of a previous retrospective analysis. Calves that were neither dehydrated nor assumed to be acidemic received an oral elec

Decision tree-based modeling of androgen pathway genes and prostate cancer risk.

BACKGROUND: Inherited variability in genes that influence androgen metabolism has been associated with risk of prostate cancer. The objective of this analysis was to evaluate interactions for prostate cancer risk by using classification and regression tree (CART) models (i.e., decision trees), and to evaluate whether these interactive effects add information about prostate cancer risk prediction beyond that of "traditional" risk factors. METHODS: We compared CART models with traditional logistic regression (LR) models for associations of factors with prostate cancer risk using 1,084 prostate

Comparison of three databases with a decision tree approach in the medical field of acute appendicitis.

Decision trees have been successfully used for years in many medical decision making applications. Transparent representation of acquired knowledge and fast algorithms made decision trees one of the most often used symbolic machine learning approaches. This paper concentrates on the problem of separating acute appendicitis, which is a special problem of acute abdominal pain from other diseases that cause acute abdominal pain by use of an decision tree approach. Early and accurate diagnosing of acute appendicitis is still a difficult and challenging problem in everyday clinical routine. An impo

Early Recognition of the Preference for Exclusive Breastfeeding in Current China: A Prediction Model based on Decision Trees.

Exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) is affected by multiple risk factors. Therefore, it is difficult for clinical professionals to identify women who will not practice EBF well and provide subsequent medical suggestions and treatments. This study aimed to apply a decision tree (DT) model to predict EBF at two months postpartum. The socio-demographic, clinical and breastfeeding parameters of 1,141 breastfeeding women from Nanjing were evaluated. Decision tree modelling was used to analyse and screen EBF factors and establish a risk assessment model of EBF. The Chinese version of the Breastfeeding Sel

A decision tree for acute oral toxicity: Implementing the last resort requirement in practice.

Acute oral toxicity (AOT) testing is widely used for hazard identification in chemical safety assessment, but traditional animal methods are still implemented despite their scientific limitations and ethical implications. Despite the availability of non-animal methods, regulatory uptake has been inconsistent, also due to a lack of structured guidance. To address this, the Animal-Free Safety Assessment Collaboration has developed a science-based Decision Tree (DT) aligned with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Integrated Approaches to Testing and Assessment (IATA

Mapping the DIGEST Decision Tree to the IDDSI Framework to Promote Reproducibility and Global Implementation.

The Dynamic Imaging Grade of Swallowing Toxicity (DIGEST) is an evidence-based tool used to grade the results of radiographic and endoscopic evaluations of pharyngeal swallowing function. DIGEST uses a decision tree to derive dysphagia grades (0 = normal, 1 = mild, 2 = moderate, 3 = severe, 4 = profound/life threatening) based on patterns of penetration/aspiration and residue events over different bolus types (e.g., liquid, pudding, solid) and consistencies (e.g., thin or thick liquid). Generic terminology was used to describe bolus types and consistencies in the original DIGEST decision tree.

A gradient boosting decision tree based estimation method for the mixture cure model.

Cure models are useful tools for analyzing censored survival data with a cured fraction. However, existing semiparametric estimation methods still rely on restrictive parametric assumptions, and existing nonparametric estimation methods only work with single covariates. In this work, we propose a gradient boosting decision tree based method to estimate the mixture cure model. The new method inherits the features of the original gradient boosting decision tree method and provides more accurate estimates of the cure probability and the relative risk for uncured subjects than existing methods whe
