Delta power during sleep is modulated by EEG-gated auricular vagal afferent nerve stimulation (EAVANS).

Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) has many clinical applications under development. In particular, there is a large interest in transcutaneous a … lation (EAVANS) approach to deliver stimulation targeting a specific instantaneous phase of the EEG Delta rhythm to modulate arousal and downstream reduction of neuroinflammation, two of the contributing factors to delirium. We hypothesize that treatment with EAVANS will modulate Delta power, which has been linked with delirium. As dominant Delta power is also …

Altered long-range temporal correlations in delta oscillatory amplitude dynamics in gambling disorder.

Understanding the neural oscillations underlying gambling disorder (GD) is essential for developing effective prevention and treatment strategies. While the spatial coordination of neural activity in GD patients has been extensively studied, the temporal dynamics of neural activity have not yet been investigated. In this study, we aim to investigate the long-range temporal correlations (LRTC) of the instantaneous amplitude of resting-state Electroencephalography (EEG) in GD patients. EEG activity was recorded during eyes-closed wakeful rest in 87 patients with GD and 40 age-, gender-, and educ

Distinct Cortical Networks Subserve Spatio-temporal Sampling in Vision through Different Oscillatory Rhythms.

Although visual input arrives continuously, sensory information is segmented into (quasi-)discrete events. Here, we investigated the neural correlates of spatiotemporal binding in humans with magnetoencephalography using two tasks where separate flashes were presented on each trial but were perceived, in a bistable way, as either a single or two separate events. The first task (two-flash fusion) involved judging one versus two flashes, whereas the second task (apparent motion: AM) involved judging coherent motion versus two stationary flashes. Results indicate two different functional networks

Mycoplasma pneumoniae: a cause of coma in the absence of meningoencephalitis.

Mycoplasma pneumoniae encephalitis is a recognized cause of reversible coma in children. As an etiology of infectious encephalitis, it yields a relatively poorer prognosis than most other causes of infectious encephalopathies. Encephalitis is generally diagnosed by a constellation of clinical symptoms and confirmed by a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) examination revealing cell pleocytosis and elevated protein. That Mycoplasma pneumoniae encephalopathy can occur in the presence of a normal CSF examination is less well appreciated. The authors report two children who presented with coma and normal CS

Daily Torpor and Sleep in a Non-human Primate, the Gray Mouse Lemur (Microcebus murinus).

Daily torpor is an energy-saving process that evolved as an extension of non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep mechanisms. In many heterothermic species there is a relation between torpor expression and the repartition of the different behavioral states of sleep. Despite the presence of sleep during this period of hypothermia, torpor induces an accumulation of sleep debt which results in a rebound of sleep in mammals. We aimed to investigate the expression of sleep-wake rhythms and delta waves during daily torpor at various ambient temperatures in a non-human primate model, the gray mouse lemur

Does electroencephalogram phase variability account for reduced P3 brain potential in externalizing disorders?

OBJECTIVE: Amplitude deficits of the P3 event-related potential (ERP) are associated with externalizing psychopathology but little is known about the nature of underlying brain electrical activity that accounts for this amplitude reduction. We sought to understand if group differences in task-induced phase-locking in electroencephalographic (EEG) delta and theta frequencies may account for P3-externalizing associations. METHODS: Adult males (N=410) completed a visual oddball task and frontal and parietal P3-related delta- and theta-band phase-invariant evoked energy and inter-trial phase-lock

Delta sleep instability in children with chronic arthritis.

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the expression of a cyclic alternating pattern (CAP) in slow wave sleep (SWS) in children with the well-defined chronic syndrome juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). Twelve patients (9-17 years of age), 7 girls, with JIA were compared to matched controls by age, pubertal stage and gender. After one night of habituation in the sleep laboratory, sleep measurements were obtained by standard polysomnography with conventional sleep scoring and additional CAP analyses. The sleep parameters of the JIA and control groups were similar for sleep efficie

Hippocampal neurodegeneration and rhythms mirror each other during acute spinal cord injury in male rats.

Spinal Cord Injury (SCI), triggers neurodegenerative changes in the spinal cord, and simultaneously alters oscillatory manifestations of motor cortex. However, these disturbances may not be limited to motor areas and other parts such as hippocampus, which is vital in the neurogenesis and cognitive function, may be affected in the neurogenic and oscillatory manners. Addressing this remarkable complication of SCI, we evaluated the hippocampal neurogenesis and rhythms through acute phase of SCI. In the present study, we used 40 male rats (Sham.W1 = 10, SCI.W1 = 10, Sham.W2 = 10, SCI.W2 = 10), and

Neuronal levels and sequence of tau modulate the power of brain rhythms.

Neural network dysfunction may contribute to functional decline and disease progression in neurodegenerative disorders. Diverse lines of evidence suggest that neuronal accumulation of tau promotes network dysfunction and cognitive decline. The A152T-variant of human tau (hTau-A152T) increases the risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and several other tauopathies. When overexpressed in neurons of transgenic mice, it causes age-dependent neuronal loss and cognitive decline, as well as non-convulsive epileptic activity, which is also seen in patients with AD. Using intracranial EEG recordings with el

Maturation of the P3 and concurrent oscillatory processes during adolescence.

OBJECTIVE: During adolescence event-related modulations of the neural response may increase. For slow event-related components, such as the P3, this developmental change may be masked due to increased amplitude levels of ongoing delta and theta oscillations in adolescents. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study design, EEG was measured in 51 participants between 13 and 24years. A visual oddball paradigm was used to elicit the P3. Our analysis focused on fronto-parietal activations within the P3 time-window and the concurrent time-frequency characteristics in the delta (∼0.5-4Hz) and theta (∼4-7H

Delta-beta coupling is associated with paternal caregiving behaviors during preschool.

Neural systems that index self-regulation have been associated with mental health outcomes, including risk for anxiety problems, from early in life. Yet, little is known about the environmental factors that may impact the development of neural systems of regulation. Behavioral work suggests that sensitive parenting, or parents' ability to correctly interpret and respond to children's signals, supports the development of regulation. Conversely, harsh parenting, or uninvolved or punitive parent behaviors, is thought to compromise developing regulatory systems. We recorded preschoolers' baseline

On the origin and suddenness of absences in genetic absence models.

The origin of spike-wave discharges (SWDs), typical for absences, has been debated for at least half a century. While most classical views adhere to a thalamic oscillatory machinery and an active role of the cortex in modifying normal oscillations into pathological SWDs, recent studies in genetic models such as WAG/Rij and GAERS rats have challenged this proposal. It seems now well established that SWDs originate from the deep layers of the somatosensory cortex, that the activity quickly spreads over the cortex and invades the thalamus. The reticular thalamic nucleus and other thalamic nuclei

Interhemispheric electroencephalographic coherence as a biological marker in alcoholism.

Electroencephalographic coherence scores in 21 teetotaler first-degree relatives of alcoholics, 27 subjects with alcohol dependence and 21 healthy subjects without a family history of alcohol abuse were compared. The relatives had significantly higher coherence scores in the frontal and parietal leads than the alcoholics and in the frontal and centroparietal leads than in the healthy subjects. This might represent a trait marker of resilience in subjects at high risk for the development of alcoholism.

Initial delta and delayed theta/alpha pattern in the temporal region on ictal EEG suggests purely hippocampal epileptogenicity in patients with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the ictal scalp EEG findings suggest purely hippocampal epileptogenicity in patients with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (mTLE) associated with hippocampal sclerosis (HS). METHODS: Twenty-three patients with mTLE with pathologically confirmed HS were divided into 12 with epileptogenicity only in the hippocampus (HS only group) and 11 with epileptogenicity in both the hippocampus and temporal neocortex or other locations (HS plus group), based on the combination of surgical procedures, postoperative outcome, and pathological findings. Sixteen underwent selective

[The EEG rhythms and psychological indices of emotions in reactive depression].

Power and topographic distribution of the EEG rhythms (delta, theta 1, theta 2, alpha, beta 1, and beta 2) were compared with the reactive and personal anxiety levels (by Spilberger) and parameters of subjective emotional semantic space (obtained by the method of subjective scaling). A general decrease in the EEG power was observed in reactive depression, with the exception of the theta-rhythm, the power of which was higher than that in healthy persons. The increase in the theta 2 power in depression was correlated with activation of the right frontal area ("the zone of negative emotions"), an

Delta-frequency stimulation of cerebellar projections can compensate for schizophrenia-related medial frontal dysfunction.

Schizophrenia involves abnormalities in the medial frontal cortex that lead to cognitive deficits. Here we investigate a novel strategy to normalize medial frontal brain activity by stimulating cerebellar projections. We used an interval timing task to study elementary cognitive processing that requires both frontal and cerebellar networks that are disrupted in patients with schizophrenia. We report three novel findings. First, patients with schizophrenia had dysfunctional delta rhythms between 1-4 Hz in the medial frontal cortex. We explored cerebellar-frontal interactions in animal models an…

Inter-hemispheric functional coupling of eyes-closed resting EEG rhythms in adolescents with Down syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: We tested the hypothesis that inter-hemispheric directional functional coupling of eyes-closed resting EEG rhythms is abnormal in adolescents with Down syndrome (DS). METHODS: Eyes-closed resting EEG data were recorded in 38 DS adolescents (18.7 years +/-0.67 SE, IQ=49+/-1.9 SE) and in 17 matched normal control subjects (NYoung=19.1 years +/-0.39 SE). The EEG data were recorded from 8 electrodes (Fp1, Fp2, C3, C4, T3, T4, O1, O2) referenced to vertex. EEG rhythms of interest were delta (2-4 Hz), theta (4-8 Hz), alpha 1 (8-10.5 Hz), alpha 2 (10.5-13 Hz), beta 1 (13-20 Hz), and beta

Magnetoencephalographic analysis of cortical oscillatory activity in patients with brain tumors: Synthetic aperture magnetometry (SAM) functional imaging of delta band activity.

Abnormal focal slow wave activity on electroencephalography and magnetoencephalography (MEG) is often seen in patients with various brain pathologies and MEG is capable of localizing cortical oscillatory activity with enhanced accuracy. In addition, MEG with synthetic aperture magnetometry (SAM) can depict changes in cortical oscillatory activity tomographically. Using SAM, we recorded cortical rhythms in patients with a brain tumor and evaluated the tomographic appearance of focal slow wave activity in relation to clinical signs and symptoms. Spontaneous MEG recordings were obtained in 15 pat
