OBJECTIVE: To investigate the efficacy of core stabilization training based on biofeedback for postpartum rectus abdominis muscle separation.
METHODS: Thirty patients aged 20-35 years with rectus diastasis after pregnancy were randomly divided into experimental group and control group. The control group received routine core stabilization training, including abdominal breathing training, bridge exercises and kneeling abdominal exercises. The experimental group performed core stabilization training based on biofeedback. Before and after intervention, rectus abdominis muscle distance, waist cir

BACKGROUND: Rectus abdominis diastasis is regarded as a risk factor for abdominal muscle dysfunction and reduced quality of life postpartum. It is thought that specific exercises and additional physical support might reduce the diastasis, with a need to establish efficacy in doing so.
OBJECTIVES: Determine the effect of four abdominal exercises as well as Tubigrip or taping in reducing rectus abdominis diastases three weeks postpartum.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional repeated measures comparison.
METHODS: 32 women undertook a single session of ultrasound imaging. Ultrasound measurements of inter-re

In response to Verma et al. we acknowledge the limitations of our study, including the absence of a control group and the modest sample size, both influenced by ethical and logistical constraints. Despite these factors, improvements in FSFI scores were statistically significant. We concur that larger multicenter studies with standardized measures are needed, and we appreciate this constructive exchange fostering further research on female sexual health after abdominoplasty.Level of Evidence V This journal requires that authors assign a level of evidence to each article. INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Despite exercise being the standard approach to diastasis recti abdominis (DRA) rehabilitation, there is no consensus on the most effective exercise routine and adjunct modalities for reducing DRA and improving functional parameters. The present study is aimed at investigating evidence for DRA rehabilitation in postpartum women, as well as knowledge gaps and areas for future research.
METHODS: For this scoping review a systematic search was conducted in MEDLINE, AMED, CINAHL, Embase, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and PEDro up to November 2022. Selection criteria included

INTRODUCTION: Surgical treatment of diastasis recti is still a matter of debate. Open approaches such as abdominoplasty, which offer the possibility to combine reparation of the diastasis with abdominal cosmetic surgery, are challenged by the emerging less-invasive laparoscopic or robotic techniques that offer shorter recovery for patients. However, evidence in favour of one of the two approaches concerning both short- and long-term complications and functional results is still lacking. In this paper, we analysed clinical and functional results of a new endo-laparoscopic technique for midline

Surgical intervention is recommended for patients presenting with ventral hernias accompanied by rectus diastasis. The priority goals of reconstruction are to restore normal abdominal wall anatomy and to minimize the risk of recurrence. Despite the availability of various surgical techniques, recurrence remains a significant concern for surgeons. This report presents the authors' experience with abdominal wall reconstruction using autologous tissue. This surgical technique is indicated for patients presenting with a midline hernia with severe rectus diastasis (defined by an inter-rectus distan

BACKGROUND: Rectus diastasis is a common sequela of pregnancy and is associated with functional disabilities such as back pain, abdominal core instability, abdominal muscle weakness, urinary incontinence, and psychological issues such as a negative body image. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the TOR concept (training, operation, and rehabilitation), a novel concept for treating abdominal wall insufficiency combined with rectus diastasis, after pregnancy. TOR consists of preoperative evaluation of symptoms and custom-designed abdominal core training, tailored rectus diastasi

Rectus abdominis diastasis is defined as a widening of the linea alba exceeding 2 cm. The European Hernia Society (EHS) provides a classification to guide its management. This article details the abdominal wall surgeon's perspective, particularly for symptomatic patients without major skin excess. Following a well-conducted physiotherapy, the rise of minimally invasive extraperitoneal techniques, particularly robotic approaches, offers an alternative to abdominoplasty in selected cases. By avoiding large subcutaneous dissections, these posterior approaches drastically reduce morbidity. The goa

PURPOSE: Rectus diastasis in male patients is underexposed in the literature. This review aims to list the available evidence and summarize recommendations for clinicians.
METHODS: A multidatabase literature search was performed with a focus on rectus diastasis (RD) in male patients. Studies were screened independently, after unblinding discrepancies discussed amongst the group. Quality of included studies was assessed and data was extracted using predefined criteria.
RESULTS: Twenty-one studies were included for qualitative syntheses. Prevalence of RD in males have been reported 25-30% and

PURPOSE: Rectus Abdominis diastasis (RAD) is a prevalent condition, particularly in post-gravidic women, with functional and esthetic impact. This Delphi consensus, led by general surgeons, aimed to establish evidence-based recommendations for the diagnosis and management of RAD in post-gravidic women.
METHODS: A Delphi process was conducted under the auspices of the Italian Society of Hernia and Abdominal Wall Surgery (ISHAWS), the national chapter of the European Hernia Society (EHS). A steering committee supervised systematic literature reviews to evaluate the quality of evidence and formu

INTRODUCTION AND PURPOSE: In the last 15 years, rectus diastasis has become a relevant topic for general surgeons. There have been published different classification systems and more than 45 surgical procedures, open or laparoendoscopic, even robotic, for treatment. This article pretends to summarize the different classification system and give some insight about what surgical technique could be recommended in each case.
METHODS: A literature search of publications on classification systems of rectus diastasis and its treatment was performed in three databases (PubMed, EMBASE and WOS) without

Return to physical activity following childbirth can be a difficult process complicated by structural changes during pregnancy. A common problem is the development of a diastasis of the rectus abdominus (DRA), defined as a horizontal separation of the abdominus muscles at the linea alba. Recent data indicate that the greater the distance of separation of the muscle, the worse the functional ability. We describe a 24-year-old active duty U.S. Navy female G1P2 with a diagnosis of DRA. At 2 months postpartum, she was referred to physical therapy because of back pain and inability to meet baseline

BACKGROUND: Diastasis of rectus abdominis (DRA) refers to a separation of the rectus abdominis from the linea alba. This study aimed to investigate the association with the severity of DRA for developing pelvic floor dysfunction among women during the first year postpartum.
METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study which collected data from 229 postpartum women. DRA was defined as a separation of ≥ 20 mm at any point 4.5 cm above, at and 4.5 cm below the umbilicus. The data for analysis includes pelvic organ prolapse quantification (POP-Q), medical history of urinary incontinence (UI), th

BACKGROUND: Symptoms arising from giant ventral hernia have been considered to be related to weakening of the abdominal muscles. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the area of the abdominal wall defect and abdominal wall muscle strength measured by the validated BioDex system together with a back/abdominal unit.
METHODS: Fifty-two patients with giant ventral hernia (>10 cm wide) underwent CT scan, clinical measurement of hernia size and BioDex measurement of muscle strength prior to surgery. The areas of the hernia derived from CT scan and from clinical measurem

Diastasis recti abdominis is a condition in which the rectus abdominus muscle separates in the midline at the linea alba producing a ventral herniation. We have observed the occurrence of this condition in HIV-infected men attending an osteopathic clinic. Two such cases are described in detail. An apparent association with HIV-associated lipodystrophy syndrome and implications for management are explored.

Diastasis recti abdominis (DRA) is an acquired condition defined by a widening of the linea alba exceeding 2 cm and the subsequent separation between the two medial margins of the rectus muscles, accompanied by a laxity of the ventral abdominal muscles, and often by ventral midline hernias. It is a quite common problem in women after pregnancy. In addition to the aesthetic implications resulting from the swelling of the anterior abdominal wall in the case of increased pressure within the abdominal cavity, DRA leads to several physical functional disorders, including muscle weakness, prolapses

We describe our current technique of drainless abdominoplasty using barbed progressive tension sutures. The perioperative management and detailed steps of procedure are outlined, including indications for concomitantly performing liposuction and repair of diastasis of the rectus abdominis muscles. This approach reliably improves abdominal contour, minimizes complications, and is straightforward to learn and perform.

INTRODUCTION: Diastasis recti abdominis usually occurs during pregnancy and delivery in young women with no surgical history, and can induce a severely negative body image, urogynecological symptoms, and musculoskeletal pain. However, the optimal surgical procedure for diastasis recti abdominis is undetermined, and minimally invasive surgery has not been adopted. Additionally, open repair causes scarring that is unlikely to improve negative body image and may even worsen it. We present a case of diastasis recti abdominis surgically treated using an extended-view totally extraperitoneal approac

Midabdominoplasty is a simple procedure requiring only local anesthetic. It is suitable for lesser abdominal deformities, such as striae, wrinkling, and relaxation, but it is not adequate for resection of lower abdominal lipodystrophy. However, it may be used for correcting diastasis of the rectus muscle or an umbilical hernia. The transverse scar line is minimal, similar to the mark at the waist left by a half-slip or panty.
