BACKGROUND: Diet-induced hypothalamic inflammation is an important mechanism leading to dysfunction of neurons involved in controlling body mass. Studies have shown that polyunsaturated fats can reduce hypothalamic inflammation. Here, we evaluated the presence and function of RvD2, a resolvin produced from docosahexaenoic acid, in the hypothalamus of mice.
METHODS: Male Swiss mice were fed either chow or a high-fat diet. RvD2 receptor and synthetic enzymes were evaluated by real-time PCR and immunofluorescence. RvD2 was determined by mass spectrometry. Dietary and pharmacological approaches w

BACKGROUND: This study aims to determine if visceral obesity can be reduced after a brief preoperative diet in obese patients.
METHODS: Forty morbidly obese patients were placed on a 1,000 kCal per day diet for 14 days before bariatric surgery. Patients had weight measurements and an abdominal ultrasound performed on days 1 and 14. The ultrasound measured visceral obesity using the distance between the abdominal muscle and the aorta, the fat thickness of the perinephric space, and the distance between the abdominal muscle and splenic vein. Mesenteric fat burden was calculated and compared.

Chronic inflammation is involved in the pathogenesis of obesity and type 2 diabetes. Recently teasaponin, an extract from tea, has been shown to have antiinflammatory effects. We examined the effect of teasaponin on obesity, inflammation, glucose metabolism, and central leptin sensitivity in obese mice fed a high-fat (HF) diet for 16 weeks. Intraperitoneal injections of teasaponin (10 mg/kg, daily) for 21 days significantly decreased the food intake and body weight of HF diet-induced obese mice. Teasaponin treatment also reduced the protein levels of proinflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6, and

Oxidative stress has been implicated broadly as a cause of cell death and neural degeneration in multiple disease conditions; however, the evidence for successful intervention with dietary antioxidant manipulations has been mixed. In this study, we investigated the potential for protection of cells in the inner ear using a dietary supplement with multiple antioxidant components, which were selected for their potential interactive effectiveness. Protection against permanent threshold shift (PTS) was observed in CBA/J mice maintained on a diet supplemented with a combination of β-carotene, vitam

Insulin signalling in the hypothalamus plays a role in maintaining body weight. The forkhead transcription factor Foxo1 is an important mediator of insulin signalling in the hypothalamus. Foxo1 stimulates the transcription of the orexigenic neuropeptide Y and Agouti-related protein through the phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase/Akt signalling pathway, but the role of hypothalamic Foxo1 in insulin resistance and obesity remains unclear. Here, we identify that a high-fat diet impaired insulin-induced hypothalamic Foxo1 phosphorylation and degradation, increasing the nuclear Foxo1 activity and hyperph

INTRODUCTION: Obese patients suffer from cardiovascular, metabolic and gastrointestinal disorders, including constipation, proposed to result from high fat diet (HFD)-induced enteric neuron loss. However, these studies used high-fat purified diets, containing reduced amounts of fiber compared to non-purified diets, known to alter gut physiology and microbiome composition. Therefore, we evaluated the effect of purified HFD-induced obesity on enteric neuron density and gastrointestinal transit compared to its proper control diet, that is, a purified control diet.
METHODS: Wild type mice were fe

This study examined the effects of dietary crude protein (CP) level and starch: fat ratio (SFR) on glucose and lipid metabolism in geese. A total of 360 male Jiangnan White geese were allocated to a 3 × 2 factorial arrangement with two CP levels (14.5% and 16.5%) and three SFRs (SFR20:1, SFR11:1, and SFR5:1) from 28 to 63 days of age. Under the low-protein condition, Both the SFR11:1 and SFR5:1 group enhanced body weight of geese at 63 d, but SFR 5:1 increased subcutaneous and abdominal fat deposition. Dietary SFR changed liver cholesterol metabolism and glycogen content, while CP levels mainl

BACKGROUND: Psoriasis is a common immune-mediated skin disease influenced by environmental and dietary factors. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), endogenous dampness-heat syndrome, often induced by diets rich in stimulating foods, is considered a trigger that aggravates psoriasis. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study investigated the gut microbiota and metabolic alterations associated with endogenous dampness-heat syndrome in psoriasis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: BALB/c mice were fed a stimulating food diet to establish a model of endogenous dampness-heat syndrome, f

Fatty Liver Hemorrhagic Syndrome (FLHS) is a prevalent metabolic disease in poultry, marked by severe fat buildup in the liver that compromises health and productivity. To investigate the effects of uridine diphosphate glucose (UDPG) on hepatic lipid metabolism in chickens, this study employed online software to predict UDPG binding to the lipid synthesis regulator site-1 protease (S1P) protein. Subsequent administration via allantoic membrane injections (AMI) and amniotic cavity injections (ACI) during embryonic development demonstrated that UDPG significantly reduced hepatic triglyceride (TG

Genetic predisposition is a necessary but not sufficient requirement for the development of a pathological immune response in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Various environmental factors and nutrition in particular also play a key role in the pathogenesis of SLE. In the present study, we evaluated the effect of a specific diet containing additional amounts of methyl donors on the development of pathological changes in the liver of lupus-prone MRL/lpr mice. The results showed that long-term administration of the diet reduced the level of inflammation and the number of inflammatory cells in

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis (OP) is a global health issue characterized by reduced bone mineral density (BMD) and an elevated risk of fractures. Oxidative stress is implicated in OP pathogenesis, and antioxidant diets and lifestyles may mitigate these effects. This research aims to investigate the correlation between oxidative balance score (OBS) and all-cause mortality in individuals diagnosed with OP.
METHODS: This study is based on data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES, 2005-2018), which covers 776 OP patients aged 50 or older. OBS was computed using dietary a

Background: The role of diet on the risk of chronic pancreatitis (CP) is understudied. The health benefits of the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) pattern have long been recognized, but its association with CP risk is unclear. We aimed to investigate the association between adherence to MedDiet and the incidence of CP in a large-scale cohort. Methods: 190 790 participants from the UK Biobank were involved, all free of CP and with typical diet recall data at recruitment. The diagnosis of CP was ascertained by the combination of hospital inpatient data, primary care data, and death registry data. Mu

We previously demonstrated that diet supplementation with seaweed Sargassum fusiforme (S. fusiforme) prevented AD-related pathology in a mouse model of Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Here, we tested a lipid extract of seaweed Himanthalia elongata (H. elongata) and a supercritical fluid (SCF) extract of S. fusiforme that is free of excess inorganic arsenic. Diet supplementation with H. elongata extract prevented cognitive deterioration in APPswePS1ΔE9 mice. Similar trends were observed for the S. fusiforme SCF extract. The cerebral amyloid-β plaque load remained unaffected. However, IHC analysis rev

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) involves two clinically defined entities, namely Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Fecal calprotectin (FCAL) is used as a marker to distinguish between organic IBD and functional bowel disease in disorders of the irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) spectrum. Food components may affect digestion and cause functional abdominal disorders of the IBS spectrum. In this retrospective study, we report on FCAL testing to search for IBD in 228 patients with disorders of the IBS spectrum caused by food intolerances/malabsorption. Included were patients with fructose mala
