Quantitative diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging of normal and diseased uterine zones.

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging has been established as the best imaging modality for the detection, localization, and staging of uterine cancers. Recently, the usefulness of diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) in the diagnosis of cancers has been reported in several studies. PURPOSE: To calculate the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values of normal uterine zones as well as benign and malignant uterine diseases, and to determine a cut-off ADC value for the quantitative detection of uterine malignancies with DWI. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Eighty-seven patients (mean age 53 years) wi

Diagnostic value of diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging in pediatric cerebral diseases.

The purpose of this study was to detect the diagnostic value of diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging in different pediatric cerebral diseases involving the cerebral white and gray matter and to compare the diffusion properties with age-matched normal children. Conventional and diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging were performed in 21 children with various neurologic disorders and 25 normal control subjects. Apparent diffusion coefficients were measured from the brain lesions and 12 normal-appearing white and gray matter areas in the study group. Twelve normal-appearing areas

Intradiploic arachnoid cyst identified by diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging--case report.

A 72-year-old woman presented with an intradiploic arachnoid cyst in the occipital intradiploic space which was found incidentally by magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. Computed tomography revealed a widened diploic space and thinning of the inner and outer tables of the occipital bone. The cyst appeared as isointense to the cerebrospinal fluid on both T1- and T2-weighted images. The differential diagnosis of intradiploic epidermoid cyst could be excluded because the lesion was low intensity on diffusion-weighted MR images. Arachnoid cyst is a benign lesion, so exploratory surgery should be avoi

Early detection of periventricular leukomalacia by diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging techniques.

Periventricular leukomalacia (PVL), the principal form of brain injury in the premature infant, is characterized by overt focal necrotic lesions in periventricular white matter and less prominent, more diffuse cerebral white matter injury. The early detection of the latter, diffuse component of PVL is not consistently possible with conventional brain imaging techniques. We demonstrate the early detection of the diffuse component of PVL by diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI). In a premature infant with no definite cerebral abnormality detectable by cranial ultrasonography or con

Negative Diffusion Weighted Imaging on Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the Brain in Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease.

A 76-year-old Caucasian woman initially presented to the Duke Memory Disorders clinic with a 9-month history of a rapid decline in cognitive, motor, and neuropsychiatric function. On initial presentation, the patient required assistance with activities of daily living. On neurological examination, she was found to have Gerstmann's syndrome along with appendicular apraxia. A positional tremor was noted without myoclonus or fasciculations. She had a paucity of speech and was unable to write her own name. Snout and grasp reflexes were present. Episodes of inappropriate laughter were noted during

Magnetic resonance imaging in the analysis of pediatric orbital tumors: utility of diffusion-weighted imaging.

PURPOSE: To identify common radiographic features of pediatric orbital tumors by the use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques, diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), fat saturated T2, and pre- and postgadolinium T1. DWI is hypothesized to help identify and predict the malignancy of specific brain tumors. To our knowledge, a similar analysis in which the authors have used this combination of MRI techniques has not been performed with orbital tumors. METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review of all patients younger than 18 years of age, each diagnosed with an orbital mass lesion,

Observer variation of magnetic resonance imaging and diffusion weighted imaging in pelvic lymph node detection.

AIM: Conventional MRI and the recently developed diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) technique both are being used for the detection of pelvic lymph node metastasis in gynaecologic cancers. Little is known about the reproducibility of DWI. This study assesses the reproducibility of pelvic lymph node detection by conventional MRI and DWI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 17 patients with gynaecological malignancies eligible for curative surgery were selected as population of interest. They had undergone preoperative conventional MRI and DWI on a 3.0T MR scanner. All images were evaluated by two experienced

[Craniocerebral trauma: magnetic resonance imaging of diffuse axonal injury].

CLINICAL/METHODICAL ISSUE: Acceleration-deceleration rotational brain trauma is a common cause of disability or death in young adults and often leads to a focal destruction of axons. The resulting pathology, axonal shear injury is referred to as diffuse axonal injury (DAI). The DAI-associated lesions occur bilaterally, are widely dispersed and have been observed in the surface and deep white matter. They are found near to and far from the impact site. STANDARD RADIOLOGICAL METHODS: When DAI is clinically suspected, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the method of choice for further clarifica

Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging may underestimate acute ischemic lesions: cautions on neglecting a computed tomography-diffusion-weighted imaging discrepancy.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Diffusion-weighted imaging sometimes fails to detect early computed tomography (CT) ischemic lesions in acute ischemic stroke patients, which is termed reversed discrepancy (RD), but its clinical significance remains unclear. The incidence and factors associated with RD in acute ischemic stroke patients within 3 hours of onset were examined. METHODS: A total of 164 consecutive patients with acute anterior circulation ischemic stroke was enrolled. All patients underwent both magnetic resonance imaging and CT within 3 hours of onset and before treatment. Their early isch

In vivo cardiac diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging: quantification of normal perfusion and diffusion coefficients with intravoxel incoherent motion imaging.

OBJECTIVES: Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and the introduction of the intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) model have provided a unique method for evaluating perfusion and diffusion within a tissue without the need for a contrast agent. Despite its relevance, cardiac DWI has thus far been limited by low b values because of signal loss induced by physiological motion. The goal of this study was to develop a methodology for estimating IVIM parameters of in vivo cardiac magnetic resonance imaging using an efficient DWI acquisition framework. This was achieved by investigating various acquisitio

Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Peritoneal Carcinomatosis: Evaluation of High b-Value Computed Diffusion-Weighted Imaging.

Over the last few years, diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) has become increasingly relevant in the diagnostic assessment of peritoneal carcinomatosis. The aim of this study was to investigate the benefits of high-b DWI (c-DWI) compared to standard DWI in patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis. A cohort of 40 patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis were included in this retrospective study. DWI was performed with b-values of 50, 400, and 800 or 1000 s/mm² on a 1.5-T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner. C-DWI was calculated using a mono-exponential model with high b-values of 1000, 2000, 30

[The role of magnetic resonance imaging in the diagnosis of diffuse axonal injury].

PURPOSE: To evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of a combination of MRI sequences - SWI (susceptibility-weighted imaging), which is highly sensitive to the haemorrhagic component, and diffusion tensor imaging DTI with assessment of fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD) - in the verification of diffuse axonal injury (DAI) following traumatic brain injury (TBI). To establish a correlation between the degree of injury determined by this MRI protocol, the morphological classification of DAI according to J.H. Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging in cancer: Reported apparent diffusion coefficients, in-vitro and in-vivo reproducibility.

There is considerable disparity in the published apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values across different anatomies. Institutions are increasingly assessing repeatability and reproducibility of the derived ADC to determine its variation, which could potentially be used as an indicator in determining tumour aggressiveness or assessing tumour response. In this manuscript, a review of selected articles published to date in healthy extra-cranial body diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging is presented, detailing reported ADC values and discussing their variation across different studies

Multi-Sequence Guided Generation of Contrast-Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging Using Diffusion Models.

Objectives: Contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (CE-MRI) plays an important role in the diagnosis, treatment monitoring, and follow-up of brain tumors. However, the use of gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs) is limited in patients with contraindications, such as severe renal impairment or situations requiring repeated examinations. This study aimed to develop a diffusion model-based Difference-Aware Guided Control Network (DAGCN) for synthesizing high-quality contrast-enhanced T1-weighted MRI (T1-CE) from non-contrast T1-weighted images in combination with an auxiliary sequence.

Diffusion Weighted Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Spinal Cord Injuries After Instrumented Fusion Stabilization.

Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI) is a promising technique for assessing spinal cord injury (SCI) that has historically been challenged by the presence of metallic stabilization hardware. This study leverages recent advances in metal-artifact resistant multi-spectral DW-MRI to enable diffusion quantification throughout the spinal cord even after fusion stabilization. Twelve participants with cervical spinal cord injuries treated with fusion stabilization and 49 asymptomatic able-bodied control participants underwent multi-spectral DW-MRI evaluation. Apparent diffusion coef

Preoperative prediction of difficult laparoscopic cholecystectomy based on diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging.

INTRODUCTION: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a common surgery with a varying difficulty level. Difficult laparoscopic cholecystectomy may be experienced by many surgeons. If difficult procedures are predicted preoperatively, surgeons may be able to plan the surgical approach and treatment accordingly. Studies have reported using blood and clinical imaging data to predict difficult cholecystectomy. However, to our knowledge, no studies have reported using MRI. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of MRI as a predictor of difficult laparoscopic cholecystectomy. METHODS: We

Semi-automated segmentation of the lateral periventricular regions using diffusion magnetic resonance imaging.

The lateral ventricular perimeter (LVP) of the brain is a critical region because in addition to housing neural stem cells required for brain development, it facilitates cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) bulk flow and functions as a blood-CSF barrier to protect periventricular white matter (PVWM) and other adjacent regions from injurious toxins. LVP injury is common, particularly among preterm infants who sustain intraventricular hemorrhage or post hemorrhagic hydrocephalus and has been associated with poor neurological outcomes. Assessment of the LVP with diffusion MRI has been challenging, primarily
