Early life racial/ethnic discrimination effects on behavioral control and health outcomes in young adults.

Early life trauma has been shown to facilitate habitual behavior, which may predispose individuals toward perpetuating maladaptive behaviors. However, previous investigations did not account for other traumatic childhood experiences like racial/ethnic discrimination exposure, nor have they examined the interaction of trauma and habits on real-world adverse outcomes. To examine these effects, we recruited 96 young adults (20.06 ± 1.89 years old) in a study probing early life racial/ethnic discrimination influences on habitual learning, and the conjunctive influences of early life discrimination

Geographical Disparities and Settlement Factors and Mental Health of Refugees Living in Germany.

(1) Background: Approximately half of all refugees living in Germany experience discrimination, which may negatively affect their mental health. Moreover, German refugees have experienced hostility, especially in eastern regions. (2) Aims: We examined the effect of perceived discrimination on refugees' mental health in Germany, with a particular focus on possible regional differences of refugee mental health and perceived discrimination. (3) Method: The data of 2075 refugees who arrived in Germany between 2013 and 2016, from a large-scale survey, was analysed using binary logistic regression.

Pathways to Hazardous Drinking Among Racially and Socioeconomically Diverse Lesbian Women: Sexual Minority Stress, Rumination, Social Isolation, and Drinking to Cope.

Lesbian women engage in more hazardous drinking than heterosexual women yet we know relatively little about what explains this disparity. In the present study, race, socioeconomic status, minority stress, general psychological processes and distress were examined as pathways to hazardous drinking among young (18-35 years) Black and non-Hispanic White lesbian women. We used the psychological mediation framework adaptation of minority stress theory and the reserve capacity model as theoretical underpinnings of the conceptual model in the current study. Self-identified lesbian participants (N= 86

Association between discrimination and subsequent psychotic experiences in patients with COVID-19: A cohort study.

Although cross-sectional studies have suggested that discrimination has a negative impact on the mental health of patients with COVID-19, no cohort studies with longitudinal data have established a causal relationship. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the association between COVID-19-related discrimination and subsequent psychotic experiences in individuals who had contracted the disease. Secondary outcomes were PTSD symptoms, psychological distress, and suicidal ideation. We utilized inverse probability weighting and marginal structural models with robust standard errors to analyze

"It's all connected:" A mixed methods study of insomnia, stigma, and discrimination among individuals on medication for opioid use disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Insomnia is one of the most common sleep disorders among those with opioid use disorder (OUD), including those on medication for OUD. There is a dearth of literature exploring the role of social stressors on sleep outcomes among this group. The purpose of this study was to explore the association between OUD-related stigma and intersectional discrimination with insomnia among individuals on medication for OUD. METHODS: Participants were recruited from treatment clinics in the Northeast United States. Using a convergent mixed-methods research design, we explored associations with s

Trauma, post-migration stress, and mental health among forcibly displaced people in Germany: Does resilience have a protective effect?

BACKGROUND: Forcibly displaced people represent a highly resilient population, but research has predominantly focused on risk factors that render them more vulnerable to mental health difficulties, such as traumatic experiences and post-migration stress. While previous studies have reported potential protective factors such as resilience and religiosity, little is known about their actual impact on risk factors. AIMS: This research examines the interplay between potential protective factors (resilience and religiosity), post-migration stress (post-migration living difficulties and perceived d

Trauma and Identity Development in Yashica Dutt's Coming Out as Dalit.

The paper examines Yashica Dutt's Coming Out as Dalit through the framework of Trauma theory, highlighting the emotional and psychological consequences of hiding one's Dalit identity in a rigidly hierarchical society. This study offers a thorough analysis of the psychological pain caused by caste-based discrimination and the lasting impacts of social marginalisation. It underscores how caste discrimination engenders internalised fear, humiliation, and identity disintegration, resulting in persistent psychological distress. This paper examines how Dutt's young teenager experiences of concealing

Contingency discrimination training and resurgence: Effects of nonzero alternative reinforcement rates during "off" sessions.

Resurgence is an increase in a previously reduced target behavior with worsening conditions for a more recently reinforced alternative behavior. Alternating sessions in which alternative reinforcement is available (i.e., "on" sessions) versus extinction (i.e., "off" sessions) during treatment (i.e., contingency discrimination training [CDT]) reduces resurgence. This experiment examined whether CDT could mitigate resurgence without complete extinction during "off" sessions. Target lever pressing of rats was reinforced in baseline and then extinguished during treatment. In treatment, all groups

Hippocampal lesion and transitive inference: dissociation of inference-based and reinforcement-based strategies in pigeons.

A typical nonverbal transitive inference task (TI) consists of several overlapping discriminations (A+ B-, B+ C-, C+ D-, D+ E-, where letters indicate stimuli and pluses and minuses denote reinforcement and nonreinforcement). A choice of stimulus B in a novel pair BD is interpreted as indicative of a TI (if B > C and C > D, then B > D). Although hippocampus has been implicated in nonverbal TI, it is not clear whether it simply maintains memory of associative values or stores an ordered representation of stimuli. We investigated the effect of hippocampal lesion on TI in pigeons while controllin

Developmental changes in the microgenesis of face perception revealed by effects of context and inversion.

Present studies on the development of face perception mechanisms are ambiguous about the question of whether holistic face vision arises early, or in the second decade of life (Crookes & McKone, 2009). Measuring the time course of face matching we assess effects of context and inversion as correlates of holistic processing in the microgenesis of face perception within the first 650 ms, and compare among 8- to 10-year-old children and adults. Results for adults indicate dominance of holistic viewing at brief timings, which is gradually replaced by feature selective strategies enabling them to s

Pigeons discriminate between human feeders.

Considered as plague in many cities, pigeons in urban areas live close to human activities and exploit this proximity to find food which is often directly delivered by people. In this study, we explored the capacity of feral pigeons to take advantage of this human-based food resource and discriminate between friendly and hostile people. Our study was conducted in an urban park. Pigeons were fed by two experimenters of approximately the same age and skin colour but wearing coats of different colours. During the training sessions, the two human feeders displayed different attitudes: one of the f

Gambling on the unconscious: a comparison of wagering and confidence ratings as measures of awareness in an artificial grammar task.

We explore three methods for measuring the conscious status of knowledge using the artificial grammar learning paradigm. We show wagering is no more sensitive to conscious knowledge than simple verbal confidence reports but is affected by risk aversion. When people wager rather than give verbal confidence they are less ready to indicate high confidence. We introduce a "no-loss gambling" method which is insensitive to risk aversion. We show that when people are just as ready to bet on a genuine random process as their own classification decisions, their classifications are still above baseline,

Effect of similarity of surround on target-letter processing.

Embedding a target letter in a similar surround slowed its processing in both a distortion-detection task and an identification task. If the target was not merely similar but also identical to the surround, however, it was processed more rapidly. The present results favor a two-factor (bias, discriminability) model similar to that of Estes (1982), who also found that performance varied nonmonotonically with changes in target--surround similarity. As similarity increases, performance steadily declines because of reduced discriminability but when improves when the surround becomes identical to t

Latino adolescents' perceived discrimination in online and offline settings: an examination of cultural risk and protective factors.

Guided by a risk and resilience framework, the current study examined the associations between Latino adolescents' (n = 219; Mage = 14.35; SD = 1.75) perceptions of ethnic discrimination in multiple settings (e.g., online, school) and several domains of adjustment (e.g., mental health, academic), and tested whether developmentally salient cultural assets (i.e., ethnic identity) directly promoted youth adjustment or moderated the negative impact of discrimination on adjustment. Each of the 3 ethnic identity components (i.e., exploration, resolution, affirmation) demonstrated evidence of promoti

Effects of everyday discrimination on sexual minority people's experiences of health care stereotype threat.

Sexual minority people report higher rates of discrimination than heterosexuals, and this discrimination may interfere with people's experiences of healthcare services. Drawing from the Generations dataset, a national probability dataset of 1244 sexual minority people, we explore how experiences of discrimination across contexts are associated with expectations of discrimination within health care via health care stereotype threat (HCST) and attribution of discrimination, and whether these patterns vary across cisgender sexual minority subgroups. Results suggest everyday discrimination is posi

Discrimination and Symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Among Black Transgender Women in the United States: The Moderating Effect of Sleep.

Background: Black transgender women experience high rates of intersectional discrimination contributing to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. While sleep typically buffers psychological distress among general populations, these relationships remain underexplored among Black transgender women, and existing protective sleep literature derives primarily from non-Hispanic White, cisgender, socioeconomically advantaged populations. Methods: This exploratory secondary cross-sectional analysis of 155 Black transgender women (aged 18+) examined whether sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Qual

Core features and psychological correlates of meaning in life among young and middle-aged people living with HIV/AIDS: A network analysis.

This study used network analysis to explore core features of meaning in life (MIL) among young and middle-aged people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) and to examine its relationships with social support, psychological capital, and perceived discrimination. A total of 472 PLWHA completed the Chinese Meaning in Life Questionnaire, Social Support Rating Scale, Positive Psychological Capital Questionnaire, and Berger HIV Stigma Scale. Network analysis identified a mixed network with 20 nodes and 82 non-zero edges. "My life has a clear sense of purpose" showed the highest expected influence and emerge

Effects of two bitter substances on olfactory conditioning in the moth Heliothis virescens.

In nature, moths encounter nutritious and toxic substances in plants, and thus have to discriminate between a diversity of tastants. Whereas olfactory learning allowing memory of nutritious plants is well demonstrated, little is known about learning and memory of toxic items in adult lepidopterans. Moths may use bitter substances to detect and possibly learn to avoid noxious plants. We have studied the physiological and behavioural effects of two bitter substances, quinine and sinigrin, on the moth Heliothis virescens. Electrophysiological recordings showed responses to both compounds in gusta

Anterograde versus Retrograde Effects of Damage to Identified Learning and Memory Systems during Acquisition, Retention, and Re-Acquisition of an Instrumental Visual Discrimination Task: Dorsal Striatum, Perirhinal Cortex, and Hippocampus.

BACKGROUND: The goal of these experiments was to determine which learning and memory system(s) were necessary for the retention of visual discriminations and subsequent acquisition of a second problem. The dorsal striatum should be involved in the acquisition and expression of this task based on previous work implicating this region in instrumental learning and memory processes. The perirhinal cortex has been implicated in learning and memory processes associated with visual information like objects, and pictures and may also play a role in the acquisition and/or retention of visual discrimina
