Demographic changes and behavioural responses shape vulnerability to infectious disease outbreaks.

Demographic shifts are reshaping population age structures worldwide, with implications for infectious disease dynamics. Since contact patterns, susceptibility and infectiousness often vary by age, the risk that pathogen introductions initiate a substantial outbreak depends on the population's age distribution and associated behavioural characteristics. We develop an age-structured mathematical model to estimate the risk that a single pathogen introduction leads to sustained transmission (the probability of a major outbreak) under long-term demographic transitions, incorporating changes in age

Kudoa septempunctata Parasite-Associated Foodborne Disease Outbreaks, South Korea, 2015-2024.

We analyzed 2015-2024 national surveillance data on Kudoa septempunctata parasite-associated foodborne disease in South Korea. Monthly cases decreased 95% during the COVID-19 pandemic, with no significant recovery through 2024; affected municipalities dropped from 89 to 27. Our findings are consistent with restaurant-based raw fish consumption as the principal transmission pathway.

Perspectives on the economic costs of disease outbreaks to health systems.

Disease outbreaks are non-random public health phenomena attributed to known or idiopathic human, animal, and animal-based factors; a realm referred to as the One Health concept; a new global public health order for control and prevention of epidemics, endemics, and pandemics. These are diseases of viral, prion, bacterial, fungal, and parasitic origin, transmitted between vertebrate animals and humans and vice versa. Emergence and re-emergence of zoonotic diseases such as rabies, Ebola, COVID-19, monkeypox, avian influenza, anthrax, brucellosis, leptospirosis, and Lyme disease continue to affe…

Outbreaks of nosocomial feline calicivirus-associated virulent systemic disease in Korea.

IMPORTANCE: Feline calicivirus (FCV)-associated viral systemic disease (VSD) is a severe systemic disease caused by virulent FCV strains and has a very poor prognosis. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical characteristics of a nosocomial FCV-VSD outbreak involving 18 cats in Korea. METHODS: Medical records of cats diagnosed with FCV-VSD from March to September 2018 at a referral veterinary hospital were reviewed. The patient's signalment, history, clinical features, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis were evaluated. RESULTS: Two outbreaks involving 18 cats diagnosed with FCV-VSD occurred ove

Resilience of mental health services amidst Ebola disease outbreaks in Africa.

INTRODUCTION: Health systems including mental health (MH) systems are resilient if they protect human life and produce better health outcomes for all during disease outbreaks or epidemics like Ebola disease and their aftermaths. We explored the resilience of MH services amidst Ebola disease outbreaks in Africa; specifically, to (i) describe the pre-, during-, and post-Ebola disease outbreak MH systems in African countries that have experienced Ebola disease outbreaks, (ii) determine the prevalence of three high burden MH disorders and how those prevalences interact with Ebola disease outbreaks…

Emergence of deadly viral haemorrhagic fever disease outbreaks in West Africa.

Recent viral hemorrhagic fever (VHF) disease outbreaks caused by Ebola virus (EBOV) and Marburg virus (MARV) in West Africa are unique and alarming. The intents of this editorial are to highlight what is known about these viruses and the disease outbreaks that they cause in the African continent and elsewhere and to raise awareness of a related virus called Lassa virus (LASV) that causes endemic viral hemorrhagic fever infections and frequent outbreaks in West Africa.

Disease outbreaks select for mate choice and coat color in wolves.

We know much about pathogen evolution and the emergence of new disease strains, but less about host resistance and how it is signaled to other individuals and subsequently maintained. The cline in frequency of black-coated wolves (Canis lupus) across North America is hypothesized to result from a relationship with canine distemper virus (CDV) outbreaks. We tested this hypothesis using cross-sectional data from wolf populations across North America that vary in the prevalence of CDV and the allele that makes coats black, longitudinal data from Yellowstone National Park, and modeling. We found t

Machine Learning Approaches for Epidemiological Investigations of Food-Borne Disease Outbreaks.

Foodborne diseases (FBDs) are infections of the gastrointestinal tract caused by foodborne pathogens (FBPs) such as bacteria [Salmonella, Listeria monocytogenes and Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC)] and several viruses, but also parasites and some fungi. Artificial intelligence (AI) and its sub-discipline machine learning (ML) are re-emerging and gaining an ever increasing popularity in the scientific community and industry, and could lead to actionable knowledge in diverse ranges of sectors including epidemiological investigations of FBD outbreaks and antimicrobial resistance (AMR). As ge

[Kikuchi disease: Evolution during outbreaks and its response to antimalarial treatment].

Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease, also known as histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis, is a syndrome characterized by the presence of usually painful cervical lymphadenopathy with fever and night sweats. It is a rare clinical entity that mainly affects young Asian women, although it found worldwide. It is a benign and self-limiting condition; however, its importance lies in its differential diagnosis with other clinical entities such as lymphoma or histiocytoma. We present a case of Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease, with special emphasis on its clinicopathological significance and its evolution during outbrea

Ebola virus disease: How can African pharmacists respond to future outbreaks?

In its forty years history (1976-2016), the West African region has recorded the most devastating form of the Ebola virus disease. The sparse knowledge of healthcare professionals and general public combined with lesser responses from international community are major factors for the dissemination of the disease. In the context of this outbreak, there is a need to highlight the roles and responsibilities of pharmacists, especially in the African healthcare setting. Moreover, the prerequisite of diagnostic kits for the timely detection of the infection as well as pharmacists' awareness of the c

Climate teleconnections and recent patterns of human and animal disease outbreaks.

BACKGROUND: Recent clusters of outbreaks of mosquito-borne diseases (Rift Valley fever and chikungunya) in Africa and parts of the Indian Ocean islands illustrate how interannual climate variability influences the changing risk patterns of disease outbreaks. Although Rift Valley fever outbreaks have been known to follow periods of above-normal rainfall, the timing of the outbreak events has largely been unknown. Similarly, there is inadequate knowledge on climate drivers of chikungunya outbreaks. We analyze a variety of climate and satellite-derived vegetation measurements to explain the coupl…

Trends of major disease outbreaks in the African region, 2003-2007.

BACKGROUND: Communicable disease outbreaks cause millions of deaths throughout Sub-Saharan Africa each year. Most of the diseases causing epidemics in the region have been nearly eradicated or brought under control in other parts of the world. In recent years, considerable effort has been directed toward public health initiatives and strategies with a potential for significant impact in the fight against infectious diseases. In 1998, the World Health Organization African Regional Office (WHO/AFRO) launched the Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response (IDSR) strategy aimed at mitigating the…

Lymphatic filariasis: disease outbreaks in military deployments from World War II.

Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is the second most common parasitic disease worldwide, after malaria. It should always be considered in the differential diagnosis for military personnel returning from disease-endemic areas. Numerous outbreaks of LF have been reported in military deployments from World War II. In contrast to the presentation of LF in indigenous populations, which often involves such uncommon complications as elephantiasis and hydrocele, the clinical presentation of LF in military personnel can vary widely and is often vague and nondescript. Common symptoms are pain and swelling of th

Using blood glucose data as an indicator for epidemic disease outbreaks.

In the future, transfer of vital sensor data from patients to the public health care system is likely to become commonplace. Systems for automatic transfer of sensor data are now at the prototype stage. As electronic health record (EHR) systems adapt such functionality, widespread use may become an actuality in the foreseeable future. To prevent spreading of diseases, an early detection of infection is important. At the time an outbreak is diagnosed, many people may already be infected due to the incubation period. This study suggests an approach for detecting an epidemic outbreak at an early s

Legionnaires' disease: the epidemiology of two outbreaks in Burlington, Vermont, 1980.

Eighty-five cases of Legionnaires' disease were diagnosed in two major outbreaks at a large regional medical center in Burlington, Vermont, in the summer of 1980. Cases in both outbreaks were positive for Legionella pneumophila, serogroup 1 by culture, serology, or direct fluorescent antibody tests. All cases had spent time in the city of Burlington in the 10 days before the onset of symptoms. Cases in both outbreaks were both hospital- and community-acquired. A case-control study identified no common in-hospital exposure, including shower use, that was associated with illness. Cases without p

[Dimorphous Hansen's disease with outbreaks of Hansen reactions and visceral lesions].

The paper presents the case of a patient with borderline hanseniasis. After a long period of illness, he presented an outbreak with new lesions, that showed reactional tuberculoid aspects; he later presented lesions with clinical and histological aspects of Virchowian hanseniasis. This evolutional type is compatible with the pseudo-exacerbations outbreaks reported by Souza Lima. This patient also presented an Erythema Nodosum outbreak with cutaneous and visceral lesions, the latter occurring with great intensity in the liver parenchyma with clinical manifestations of icterus and hepatomegaly.

Early detection of disease outbreaks and non-outbreaks using incidence data: A framework using feature-based time series classification and machine learning.

Forecasting the occurrence and absence of novel disease outbreaks is essential for disease management, yet existing methods are often context-specific, require a long preparation time, and non-outbreak prediction remains understudied. To address this gap, we propose a novel framework using a feature-based time series classification (TSC) method to forecast outbreaks and non-outbreaks. We tested our methods on synthetic data from a Susceptible-Infected-Recovered (SIR) model for slowly changing, noisy disease dynamics. Outbreak sequences give a transcritical bifurcation within a specified future…
