[Relation between benzodiazepine abuse and trauma].

People have abused drugs from the moment they found out about them. Abuse of substances increased during crises (war, displacement, catastrophes, different stress-induced circumstances, fear for existence, absence of prospects and hope). Benzodiazepines are most frequently abused psychopharmaceuticals due to their easy accessibility. The war and aggression on Bosnia and Herzegovina have made unforeseeable consequences, they have caused great migration of population, deaths, wounding, separation of families, unemployment and social poverty. All these factors have had influence on mental health

Re-emerging conceptual integration: commentary on Berkowitz's "on the consideration of automatic as well as controlled psychological processes in aggression".

In recent decades, researchers in various areas of psychology have challenged the claims of a single mode of information processing, and developed dual-process models of social behaviors. Although these theories differ on a number of dimensions, they all share the basic assumption that two different modes of information processing operate in making decision and copying behavior. In essence, the common distinction in these perspectives is between controlled vs. automatic, conscious vs. unconscious, and affective vs. cognitive modes of processing. The purpose of Berkowitz's article is to go beyo

Psychological distress, PTSD, and complex PTSD in a war-torn population: a two-wave longitudinal study among medical students in Gaza.

BACKGROUND: Since October 2023, civilians in Gaza have endured prolonged military assaults, repeated displacement, and the collapse of essential services-conditions that impose severe, cumulative psychological trauma. Medical students constitute a particularly vulnerable civilian subgroup, balancing personal insecurity with clinical and academic duties amid war. This study examined how prolonged war exposure affects psychological distress and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and explored the prevalence and predictors of Complex PTSD (CPTSD) among medical students in Gaza. METHODS: We con

Association of Optimism, Causal Thinking, and Karma Beliefs with PTSD and Depression 8 Years After the Tsunami in Sri Lanka.

In 2004, the Indian Ocean tsunami struck Asia and caused high mortality, displacement, and psychological trauma in Sri Lanka. Previous studies have found that optimism protects against PTSD and depression, whereas pessimistic causal thinking and karma beliefs are associated with depression soon after a trauma. The objective of this study is to examine whether these factors continue to be associated with psychological health among Sri Lankan coastal residents 8 years after the tsunami. A semi-structured survey was conducted in 5 coastal districts. Three hundred twenty-five participants had dire

Normalization of abuse and barriers to reporting among adolescents and young people in settings of displacement in Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a critical developmental stage marked by physical, psychological, and cognitive growth, increasing autonomy, social exploration, and risk-taking behaviors. However, these natural transitions in displacement settings are overshadowed by heightened vulnerabilities such as gender-based violence. In many displacement settings, recurrent exposure to violence leads to its acceptance as an unavoidable part of daily life. Sometimes, violence is normalized, leading to further exacerbation of the crisis. Our study explored the in-depth experiences and normalization of abuse an

Trauma, distress, and resilience among Ukrainian migrants: mental health and cultural contexts in Europe.

The full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine has caused unprecedented displacement across Europe, yet evidence on the psychological adaptation of Ukrainian migrants in different institutional contexts remains limited. This study examines how traumatic exposure, resilience, and cultural trauma symptoms, and perceived social support interact to shape mental health outcomes among Ukrainian migrants residing in eight countries: Slovenia, Poland, Cyprus, Spain, Germany, Portugal, Serbia, and Ukraine. Using validated psychometric instruments (RHS-15, HSCL-25, DSM-5 trauma clusters, Cultural Symptoms o

Confronting the Mental Health Challenges of Large-Scale Combat Operations.

The Department of Defense predicts that future conflicts will involve large-scale combat operations (LSCOs) characterized by high-intensity warfare between technologically advanced nations. These conflicts may result in prolonged exposure to violence, increasing the risk of severe mental health consequences for military personnel, veterans, and civilians. Research on past wars and ongoing conflicts, such as the war in Ukraine, demonstrates the heightened risks of post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, moral injury, and compassion fatigue in LSCOs. Unlike previous conflicts in Iraq and Afg

Personal sense of coherence and posttraumatic stress symptoms among internally displaced women exposed to the Anglophone Crisis in Cameroon.

Women and girls affected by armed conflict and forced displacement are exposed to a high burden of potentially traumatic events, gendered insecurity, disrupted social networks, and barriers to mental health care. Evidence on protective psychological resources among internally displaced women in Central Africa remains limited. This study examined trauma load, personal sense of coherence (SoC), and sense of community coherence (SoCC) as predictors of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptom severity among women internally displaced by the Anglophone Crisis in Cameroon. A sample of 133 female
