Social anxiety symptoms and drinking behaviors among college students: the mediating effects of drinking motives.

The impact of social anxiety on negative alcohol-related behaviors among college students has been studied extensively. Drinking motives are considered the most proximal indicator of college student drinking behavior. The current study examined the mediating role of drinking motives in the relationship that social anxiety symptoms have with problematic (alcohol consumption, harmful drinking, and negative consequences) and safe (protective behavioral strategies) drinking behaviors. Participants were 532 undergraduates who completed measures of social anxiety, drinking motives, alcohol use, harm…

Effects of heavy drinking, binge drinking, and family history of alcoholism on regional brain metabolites.

BACKGROUND: The main goals are to investigate the effects of chronic active heavy drinking on N-acetylaspartate (NAA) and other metabolites throughout the brain and to determine whether they are affected by family history (FH) of alcoholism and long-term drinking pattern. METHODS: Forty-six chronic heavy drinkers (HD) and 52 light drinkers (LD) were recruited from the community and compared on measures of regional brain structure using magnetic resonance imaging and measures of common brain metabolites in gray matter (GM) and white matter (WM) of the major lobes, subcortical nuclei, brainstem…

Manifestation of Drinking Profiles in Daily Life: Associations With Momentary Negative Affect, Impulsivity, and Drinking.

BACKGROUND: Negative affect and impulsivity can influence one another and have momentary influences on emerging adult drinking behaviors. Heterogeneity in drinking patterns/profiles, such as frequent heavy or light drinking, may also reflect differences in these momentary effects potentially due to distinct putative drinking mechanisms. METHODS: Emerging adults (N = 366; 64.4% women) with at least one binge drinking episode in the past 30 days completed a baseline survey and 14-day ecological momentary assessments (EMA) with multiple daily surveys (n ≥ 7; M = 5.33). Latent profile analysis (L…

Exploring how women with HIV develop hazardous drinking patterns: a qualitative assessment of drinking histories.

INTRODUCTION: Hazardous alcohol use is prevalent among people with HIV, with women disproportionately experiencing adverse alcohol-related outcomes in HIV care. This study aimed to qualitatively explore factors contributing to the onset, escalation, and continuation of hazardous drinking among women with HIV. METHODS: Women with HIV and hazardous drinking patterns were recruited from the WHAT-IF? Study, a randomized trial evaluating the efficacy of naltrexone for alcohol reduction. Participants completed 60-minute semi-structured interviews. Interview transcripts were analyzed using thematic …

Drinking practices: The variation of drinking events across intersections of sex, age and household income.

INTRODUCTION: Investigations of drinking practices often rely on cross-country comparisons of population averages in beverage preferences, drinking volumes and frequencies. Here, we investigate within-culture patterns and variations in where, why and how people drink, answering the research question: how does engagement in drinking practices vary by sex, age and household income? METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis examining the societal distribution (by age, sex, household income) of 12 drinking practices: four off-trade practices (in-home consumption; e.g., evening at home with…

Chronic active heavy drinking and family history of problem drinking modulate regional brain tissue volumes.

The goals of this study were to measure if chronic active heavy drinking is associated with brain volume loss in non-treatment seeking men and women, and to assess the effect of positive family history of problem drinking on brain structure in heavy drinkers. Automated image processing was used to analyze high-resolution T1-weighted magnetic resonance images from 49 active heavy drinkers and 49 age- and sex-matched light drinkers, yielding gray matter, white matter and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) volumes within the frontal, temporal, parietal and occipital lobes. Regional brain volume measures w…

Sources of alcohol and associations with drinking frequency and binge drinking among a large sample of adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Underage drinking remains a major public health concern worldwide, contributing to a wide range of health and social harms. While adolescent alcohol use has been widely studied, there is limited evidence on how adolescents obtain alcohol and how these sources relate to drinking behaviours. METHODS: This cross-sectional analysis used data from 8,507 Grades 9-12 students participating in the 2022-2023 COMPASS study across 66 schools in Canada. Analyses were restricted to students who reported alcohol use in the past 12 months. Proportional odds mixed models assessed associations bet…

PTSD-related drinking to cope and changes in drinking risk levels in a nationally representative sample.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with high-risk drinking that may be sustained through drinking to cope with PTSD symptoms. This study sought to determine whether PTSD-related drinking to cope was associated with changes in World Health Organization risk drinking levels (WHO RDL) over 3 years among those with PTSD symptoms, using data from the National Epidemiologic Survey of Alcohol and Related Conditions. The sample included individuals who reported past-year alcohol use and PTSD symptoms at Wave 1 (baseline). Mean drinks per drinking day were used to define WHO RDL (low, m…

A New Perspective on "Drinking" Self: A Network Approach to Characterizing Drinking-Related Changes in Personality.

BACKGROUND: Previous research suggests that self-knowledge, particularly perceptions of oneself as a "drinker," may influence the development and progression of alcohol use and related problems, such as binge drinking. While existing studies have provided empirical evidence for the importance of assessing drinking self-perception within the five-factor model of personality framework, further examination with novel analytic methods, such as network analyses, could improve understanding of the drinker self-concept. Methods: Five factor traits of openness to experience, conscientiousness, extrave…

Survival of Burkholderia pseudomallei and Pathogenic Leptospira in Cola, Beer, Energy Drinks, and Sports Drinks.

Burkholderia pseudomallei and pathogenic Leptospira in contaminated drinking water can cause melioidosis and leptospirosis, respectively. Here, we evaluated their survival in beverages. We mixed six isolates (three isolates per organism) in four beverages (Coca-Cola®, Red Bull®, Singha® beer, and Gatorade®) and distilled water as the control at two final concentrations (1 × 107 colony-forming units [CFU]/mL and 1 × 103 CFU/mL). The solution was kept at two temperatures (37°C and 4°C). At 4°C and at the high concentration, pathogenic Leptospira survived in Coca-Cola® up to 3 minutes and in Sing…

The separate and interactive effects of drinking motives and social anxiety symptoms in predicting drinking outcomes.

PURPOSE: Our goal was to test the separate and interactive effects of drinking motives and social anxiety symptoms in predicting drinking-related consumption and problems. METHODS: Participants (N=730; 59.7% female) were undergraduate college students who completed measures of social anxiety symptoms, drinking motives, alcohol consumption, and drinking problems. RESULTS: Greater social anxiety symptoms were significantly associated with less alcohol consumption, and there was some evidence that greater social anxiety symptoms were also associated with greater alcohol-relevant problems. Signi…

Focus on: College drinking and related problems: magnitude and prevention of college drinking and related problems.

In 2002, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) issued a report entitled A Call to Action: Changing the Culture of Drinking at U.S. Colleges. Data on the magnitude of college drinking problems in 1998 to 1999 were reported. From 1999 to 2005, the proportion of college students aged 18-24 who drank five or more drinks on a single occasion in the past month increased from 41.7 percent to 45.2 percent. The proportion who drove under the influence of alcohol increased from 26.1 percent to 29.2 percent. Higher percentages of 21- to 24-year-olds engaged in those behaviors tha…

Risk Perception, Drinking Motives, and Willingness to Drink in Social Contexts Among Emerging Adults.

OBJECTIVE: Emerging adults (18-25 years) report high instances of heavy episodic drinking and related problems; however, less is known about the relation of risk perception and alcohol-related outcomes, especially as it relates to social drinking in trans and gender diverse (TGD) individuals. METHOD: To capture a realistic portrayal of real-time social drinking decision-making, we used the Collegiate-Simulated Intoxication Digital Elicitation (C-SIDE) to collect behavioral willingness ratings for alcohol in a variety of simulated situations from 273 18-25 year olds in the United States (187 c…

The Moderation Effect of Basic Need Satisfaction in the Relationship Between Drinking Motives and Drinking Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Self-determination theory indicates that three basic psychological needs-autonomy, competence, and relatedness motivate human behaviors. OBJECTIVE: This research examined how basic need satisfaction moderated the relationship between drinking motives and drinking outcomes. METHOD: We analyzed the data from a baseline assessment of a larger project evaluating brief alcohol interventions among heavy-drinking college students. Participants were 605 undergraduate students from two large public universities. RESULTS: The results show that only relatedness needs moderated the relation…

Risk assessment of energy drinks with focus on cardiovascular parameters and energy drink consumption in Europe.

To assess the possible cardiovascular risks associated with energy drink (ED) consumption in Europe, a comprehensive literature research was performed in regard to (i) possible ED-induced dose-dependent cardiovascular outcomes, (ii) ED consumption patterns in Europe and (iii) the risks of EDs in combination with alcohol. The identified intervention studies primarily investigated acute ED effects in young healthy adults. Moderate consumption of EDs corresponding to an acute caffeine intake of up to 200 mg did not result in clinically relevant cardiovascular changes in young healthy adults. Howe

Age and racial/ethnic differences in drinking and drinking-related problems in a community sample of lesbians.

OBJECTIVE: Although research on alcohol use among women has increased dramatically during the past several decades, relatively few studies have focused on lesbians, and almost none have included sufficient numbers of older lesbians or lesbians of color to permit comparative analyses. Using data from the Chicago Health and Life Experiences of Women Study (CHLEW), we examined drinking patterns and problems in a large and diverse sample of lesbians. METHOD: Structured interviews were conducted with 447 community-residing adult women (ages 18-83) who self-identified as lesbians (48% non-Hispanic …

The Loughborough Alcohol Drinking Questionnaire (LoAD-Q) for assessment of emotional, external, and restrained drinking behaviour.

Researching alcohol-related addictive behaviours typically utilises questionnaires which measure an individual's level of alcohol use. However, these questionnaires typically either rely on a participant reporting the amount of alcohol they drink in units or a measure of disorderly drinking behaviour. Such measures do not necessarily capture the essence of drinking behaviours in the general population. This study aimed to validate a new alcohol drinking questionnaire and evaluate its internal consistency, factor structure, and test-retest reliability. Exploratory factor analysis revealed a 3-c…
