Until 1977 the prognosis in childhood near drowning was rather poor. Many children died or survived permanently damaged by hypoxic encephalopathy. In the late seventies new methods of invasive neurointensive care were introduced in pediatric intensive care and were used in selected cases of near drowning. In one center (Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto) the prognosis in those children who remained comatose after the initial resuscitation was significantly improved with these methods. 14 personally observed cases of near-drowning are reported (1978-1980). During this time we were using invas…

A case is presented of an infant who may have been immersed in water for 15 minutes, presenting apparently dead by instant assessment criteria, who was resuscitated and rehabilitated to make an excellent recovery.

Worldwide, children between the ages of 0 and 4 years have the highest rate of drowning incidents. Hypoxia is the most detrimental consequence of drowning incidents. Therefore, restoration of oxygenation, ventilation, and perfusion is of the utmost importance and should be restored as rapidly as possible via adequate airway management and respiratory support during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Optimizing the CPR technique used following drowning incidents in children, has the potential to improve survival. There is currently extremely limited scientific knowledge regarding the optimal …

BACKGROUND: Anagrelide is a drug used for treatment of essential thrombocytosis especially when conventional therapy is insufficient. Adverse effects associated with anagrelide are palpitation, liver toxicity, renal failure and in few cases pericardial effusion. We here report a rare case of anagrelide induced pericardial effusion.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 76-year-old male with past medical history of hypertension, hyperlipidemia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and myeloproliferative disorder presented to the emergency department with dyspnea on rest and exertion. He was initially treated

Fisheries bycatch, the incidental mortality that occurs as a result of entanglement in fishing gear, is an important conservation threat to penguins and other seabirds. Identification of entanglement and drowning in beach-cast carcasses of seabirds remains a challenge, as it is still unclear what lesions are to be expected in a bycaught seabird. We necropsied 2 Magellanic penguins Spheniscus magellanicus that were entangled and drowned in gillnets. Marked distension of the lungs with foamy red fluid and marked oedema of the dorsal visceral pleura were prominent lesions consistent with those de…

Accidental drownings are severe and sometimes mortal events in children. Our study aims to better clarify the epidemiology and the respiratory complications of these accidents in our hospital. We led a retrospective study over 10 years concerning the children hospitalized for accidental drowning in our hospital centre. Age at the moment of the accident, sex, history of accident, hospitable care, thoracic imaging and neurological outcome of the children were studied. In total, 83 children were hospitalized (5 years on average, 70% being boys). The drowning especially took place in fresh water (…

Drowning is a leading cause of injury-related death in children. In 2000, more than 1400 US children younger than 20 years drowned. Most (91%) of these deaths were unintentional and were not related to boating. For each drowning death, it is estimated that at least 1 to 4 children suffer a serious nonfatal submersion event, many of which leave children with permanent disabilities. Environmental strategies, such as installation of 4-sided fences around swimming pools, and behavioral strategies, such as increased supervision of children while around water, are needed to prevent these tragedies.

An unemployed, 60-year-old Singaporean gentleman died during a brief overseas trip to another South-East Asian country. He had, presumably, drowned in the bathtub of his hotel room, which he shared with his then 44-year-old companion, who was supposedly his nephew. The relevant public health and medico-legal authorities of the host country conducted an external examination of the body at the scene, whereupon they agreed with the police that his death was probably due to accidental drowning following an episode of syncope. It would appear that this verdict was based almost entirely on circumsta…

From 1972 through 1983 there were 10 near-drowned children (7 boys and 3 girls) aged 1 to 4 years, treated as inpatients at the Children's Hospital of the Medical Academy Dresden. Three of them showed a severe aspiration pneumonia which in one case was complicated by bilateral pneumothoraces. In a further five children there were radiological signs of pulmonary oedema. Only in two children were the X-ray pictures of the chest normal.

Between 1972 and 1981 40 victims of near-drowning were admitted to the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center. Hospital records were reviewed with regard to: 1) the circumstances of submersion and rescue; 2) the patient's condition upon arrival at the emergency room; 3) treatment, hospital course, and ultimate outcome. There were ten hospital deaths, 23 patients recovered completely, and seven were discharged with incapacitating neurologic disability. Three of the neurologically impaired patients died between 1 and 13 months after discharge. All patients who arrived with a beating heart were eventu…

This paper reviews the circumstances of 142 deaths by drowning which occurred in Geelong and district during the years 1959 to 1974. The effectiveness of safety nets and protective fences as a means of preventing the accidental submersion of young children in home swimming pools is questioned. Consumption of alcohol before submersion played a major role in the death of many adult males. Of males aged 26 years and over, 79% imbibed alcohol before death, and 57% had a blood alcohol concentration greater than 0.1% at autopsy. Of males aged 17 to 25 years of age, 25% imbibed alcohol before death a…

Empyema and subacute invasive aspergillosis are rare pathologies that should not be overlooked because of the need for early treatment and a different management of bacterial infections which are more frequent. We report the case of a 75-year-old man with subacute invasive aspergillosis and an empyema following drowning and cardiopulmonary arrest.
