Prevalence of common chronic respiratory diseases in drug misusers: a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: A randomised controlled trial of substance misuse indicated that many patients who use methadone have respiratory symptoms and/or are prescribed respiratory medications. There is little research in this area. AIMS: To determine the prevalence of respiratory disease and prescriptions among drug misusers. METHODS: This historical cohort study of drug misusers and matched controls analysed routinely collected primary care data. The prevalence of common chronic respiratory diseases, class and number of respiratory medications were examined. RESULTS: The cohort of 18,570 patients (9,

Psychosocial and toxicological profile of drug misuse in male army conscripts in Kuwait.

The pattern of drug use among 2183 young Kuwaiti conscripts was studied using the Drug Abuse Screening Test (DAST) and urine analysis. Drug misuse rates were low, compared with similar set-ups elsewhere as independently confirmed by urine test (0.7% amphetamine and 2.8% other street drugs; alcohol was not detected in this sample) and self-report (7.9% on DAST). This may be attributed to the influence of the Islamic traditions on lifestyles. Significant correlations were seen between self-report of multiple drug use and positive urine results for both amphetamine and other street drugs, while p

Misuse of Prescription and Illicit Drugs in Middle Adulthood in the Context of the Opioid Epidemic.

Background: The United States' opioid epidemic continues to escalate overdose deaths. Understanding its extent is complicated by concurrent misuse of other prescription or illicit drugs, increasing risk for overdose. Current surveillance using electronic medical records and police data has limitations and frequently fails to distinguish middle-aged adults from other age groups in reporting. Objectives: The purpose of this analysis is to (1) describe characteristics of middle-aged US adults who report misusing prescription and illicit drugs and (2) evaluate if misusing prescription opioids incr

A fatal case of myocardial damage due to misuse of the "designer drug" MDMA.

A 39-year-old woman collapsed after oral intake of 3,4-methylenedioxymethyl-amphetamine (MDMA, "ecstasy"). After ingestion of the drug, she had felt persistent discomfort in her anterior chest area, and lost consciousness for a few minutes on the following morning. She was transported to a hospital and died seven days after collapse. A serum sample obtained on admission revealed an MDMA concentration of 1.2mg/L, but no evidence of any other drug including amphetamine, methamphetamine, or other ring-substituted amphetamines. Microscopic examination at autopsy revealed striking changes in the he

Human immunodeficiency virus in drug misusers and increased consultation in general practice.

The use of general practitioner services by a group of intravenous drug users was recorded over two two-year time periods 1984-85 and 1986-87. This was felt to represent the period of maximum change in awareness of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection by patients and medical staff. Fifty patients were randomly selected: 25 who were HIV positive and 25 who were HIV negative. Between the two time periods a dramatic increase in consultation rate for both high risk and infected patients attending their general practitioner was recorded (318% and 172% increase, respectively). A small increa

Management of drug misuse: an 8-year follow-up survey of Scottish GPs.

This study repeated a Scotland-wide survey of one-in-four GPs from 2000, to compare findings with 2008. A 60% response was achieved (of 1065). Almost 44% of GPs were treating drug misusers (62% in 2000). Enhanced services were provided by less than half of practices. Seven per cent of responders were only comfortable prescribing below the recommended minimum dose of 60 mg methadone, (33% in 2000). Over 70% offered blood-borne virus screening and 71% were aware of patients using psychostimulants. Recent changes, particularly the new GP contract may have decreased GP involvement in treating drug

[Identification of drug misuse. Study of spontaneous notifications of adverse drug events in a regional safety reporting centre].

INTRODUCTION: The misuse of drugs, common practice for some, is a source of iatrogenic diseases and considerable supplementary costs in hospital budgets. The aim of this study was to quantify the number of adverse events (AE) related to the misuse of drugs. METHODS: This was a study conducted on 200 new validated AE case reports. In each report, we searched for the drug(s) responsible and checked whether the prescription respected the SPC (summary of product characteristics) and current guidelines or not. RESULTS: Among the 200 reports, 49 (24.5%) cases of AE were related to the misuse of a

Pathways from Childhood Adversity to Prescription Drug Misuse Among Young Adult African Immigrants.

PURPOSE: African immigrants remain underrepresented in research on adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and substance misuse. This study examined the relationship between ACEs and non-medical prescription drug use (NMPDU) among young adult African immigrants in the United States and explored whether mental health distress, perceived discrimination, and self-esteem mediated this relationship. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were drawn from a cross-sectional survey of 599 African immigrants in the United States; analyses focused on a subsample of 297 young adults ages 18-25. Expecting medication misuse: a proactive approach to drug discovery to prevent fatal overdose.

Misuse of central nervous system (CNS) depressants (alprazolam, fentanyl, etc.) is a major cause of fatal overdose, with a high prevalence of deaths involving polydrug interactions from the victim's own prescriptions. Thus, there is an urgent need to improve the safety of CNS depressants to prevent fatalities. Pharmacological pursuits aiming to prevent harm through the design of non-addictive alternatives have either failed before clinical trials or produced mediocre treatment alternatives. Therefore, we propose a new perspective for medicinal chemists: rather than aiming to prevent misuse, we

Contextualizing prescription opioid misuse and heroin use within dimensional models of drug involvement.

BACKGROUND: Prescription opioid misuse (POM) is often implicated in heroin initiation, despite evidence that POM does not predict heroin initiation any better than other drug use. Additionally, prescription misuse and illicit use behaviors tend to respectively "cluster" together. This study aimed to test a series of theory-driven factor models to explore how POM and heroin use are situated within the broader constellation of drug use that typically occurs alongside opioid (mis)use. METHODS: 36,309 individuals from NESARC-III (56.31% female; mean age=45.63 [SD=17.53]) reported their lifetime (

Alcohol, Prescription Drug Misuse, Sexual Violence, and Dating Violence Among High School Youth.

PURPOSE: Sexual violence (SV), teen dating violence (TDV), and substance use are significant public health concerns among U.S. adolescents. This study examined whether latent classes of baseline alcohol and prescription drug misuse longitudinally predict SV and TDV victimization and perpetration (i.e., verbal, relational, physical/threatening, and sexual) 1 year later. METHODS: Students from six Midwestern high schools (n = 1,875; grades 9-11) completed surveys across two consecutive spring semesters. Latent class analysis was used to identify classes of individuals according to four substance

Correlates of Non-Medical Prescription Drug Misuse Among a Treatment-Seeking Population: A Comparison with Illicit Drug Users.

Prescription drugs (PD) undoubtedly help people with various physical or psychiatric ailments. Nevertheless, they are often diverted and misused (use without prescription or for purposes/in ways not intended by the prescriber). This study compared the sociodemographic and clinical correlates of those who misused PDs, used illegal drugs and co-ingested both, to identify those who were at a high risk of misusing these drugs. Retrospective analysis of the treatment outcome monitoring (TOM) data for the period of 2013⁻2017 identified 1369 subjects for the study; 295 patients presented with PD use

Trajectories of Prescription Drug Misuse Among US Adults From Ages 18 to 50 Years.

IMPORTANCE: US adults born from 1965 to 1996 had high exposure to controlled medications, yet little is known about how this exposure has affected them over time. Prescription drug misuse (PDM) has increased among adults in the past 2 decades, with related increases in emergency department visits, overdoses, and deaths. OBJECTIVES: To identify 32-year PDM trajectories involving opioids, stimulants, and sedatives or tranquilizers and to examine associations between these PDM trajectories and substance use disorder (SUD) symptoms in adulthood as well as between baseline characteristics and PDM

Immigration policies as political determinants of alcohol and drug misuse among US-born Latinos.

BACKGROUND: The role of immigration policies as political determinants of health among US-born Latinos is significantly understudied. Immigration policies can produce immigration-related stressors that have 'spill over' effects on the health behaviors of US-born Latinos. However, less is known about how immigration-related stressors relate to substance misuse among US-born Latinos. METHODS: 1,784 US-born Latinos were recruited via web-panels in September 2021 to complete an online questionnaire. Inclusion criteria included: (1) self-identifying as Latino; (2) born in the US; and (3) being 18

Gabapentin drug misuse signals: A pharmacovigilance assessment using the FDA adverse event reporting system.

BACKGROUND: Although there have been increasing reports of intentional gabapentin misuse, epidemiological evidence for the phenomenon is limited. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there are pharmacovigilance abuse signals for gabapentin. METHODS: Using FDA Adverse Events Reporting System reports from January 1, 2005 to December 31, 2015, we calculated pharmacovigilance signal measures (i.e., reporting odds ratio, proportional reporting ratio, information component, and empirical Bayes geometric mean) for abuse-related adverse event (AR-AE)-gabapentin pairs. Drug misuse, self-esteem, and intimate partner violence among low-income African American women.

OBJECTIVE: Little attention has been paid to the association between drug misuse and intimate partner violence (IPV) in low-income African American women or factors that protect African American women with drug misuse from IPV exposure. To fill these gaps, this study examined if the drug misuse-IPV exposure link was moderated by self-esteem in the target population. METHOD: Participants (n = 204; Mage = 36.8 years, SDage = 11.1), low-income African American women with a recent suicide attempt and IPV exposure, were recruited from a large, public health care system and completed measures asses
