We describe the case of a 50-year-old male with achondroplastic dwarfism who presents with a renal mass in his left kidney concerning for renal cell carcinoma. The patient successfully underwent a robotic partial nephrectomy, which revealed a T1a renal cell carcinoma. The tumor was excised successfully without any intraoperative complications demonstrating that a robotic partial nephrectomy is technically both safe and effective in patients with achondroplastic dwarfism.

In this series of nine patients with diastrophic dwarfism, multiple problems with the spine were noted. Scoliosis was present in all patients and usually became rapidly progressive in the preadolescent years. The scoliosis had a strong tendency to become severe and rigid, with a large rotatory component. Early brace treatment appeared to have merit. Cervical kyphosis was noted in four patients; it resolved in three patients, but progressed in one to a 130-degree deformity, quadriplegia, and death. All patients in this series had spina bifida occulta in the cervical spine. Six of the nine patie…

The dwarfing mechanism in apple clonal rootstocks is driven by complex interactions between anatomical, hormonal, genetic, and phenolic factors, offering potential for advanced genetic manipulation to optimize tree size and enhance orchard productivity. The widespread adoption of dwarfing rootstocks is pivotal to modern commercial apple (Malus × domestica Borkh) orchards due to their ability to control tree size, shorten the juvenile period, and enhance reproductive growth and overall productivity. The underlying mechanisms of rootstock-induced dwarfism are multifaceted and involve interaction…

Microcephalic osteodysplastic primordial dwarfism type 1 (MOPD1) is an uncommon cause of microcephaly and intrauterine growth retardation in a newborn. Early identifying features include but are not limited to sloping forehead, micrognathia, sparse hair, including of eyebrows and short limbs. Immediate radiological findings may include partial or complete agenesis of the corpus callosum, interhemispheric cyst and shallow acetabula leading to dislocation. Genetic testing displaying a mutation in RNU4ATAC gene is necessary for definitive diagnosis. Early identification is important as MOPD1 is a…

A healthy 27-year-old pregnant woman underwent sonographic examination because her uterine size was large for 20 weeks' menstrual age. Sonograms showed short fetal limbs with hitchhiker thumbs and toes, thoracic scoliosis, clubbed feet, and polyhydramnios. The ossification of all bony structures appeared normal, and there was no evidence of fractures. On the basis of these sonographic findings, we diagnosed skeletal dysplasia and short-limbed dwarfism, most likely diastrophic dwarfism. We counseled the parents, and the pregnancy was continued. At 37 weeks menstrual age, the patient vaginally d…

A case of thanatophoric dwarfism is reported in a 35-year-old woman. The diagnosis was made at 34 weeks gestation by ultrasound. Marked shortening of the extremities, macrocephaly, narrow thorax and polyhydramnios were observed. The importance of routine ultrasound screening in pregnancy is emphasized, since such malformations can be detected prenatally.
