In 2003, osteonecrosis of the jaw was described as an intraoral complication of bisphosphonate therapy. More recently, cases of avascular necrosis of the hip were reported in patients with long-lasting bisphosphonate therapy. Ear canal resonance is thought to be responsible for the prominent loss of hearing in the 3.0 to 6.0 kHz region caused by over-exposure to noise. Relationships were identified between frequency-of-maximum temporary threshold shift (TTS) and physical measurements of the ear canal in 56 subjects. TTSs were produced by two separate exposures to broadband noise of either 2 hr or 20 minute duration. Itching of the ear canal, with oozing, edema and cracking of the skin due to absence or insufficiency of wax was treated in more than 200 cases by instructing the patient to massage the ear canal with a cotton tip applicator soaked with a hydrocortisone preparation and inserted a half to three-quarters of an inch beyond the meatus. Some 95 per cent of patients reported good to excellent results in three to four days after the beginning of treatment. In the remainder results were fair.

Few studies have evaluated the efficacy of proton beam therapy (PBT) for external auditory canal cancer (EACC) or middle ear cancer (MEC). Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and toxicity of PBT for EACC and MEC. Between December 2009 and August 2018, 15 patients (seven males and eight females) underwent PBT for EACC or MEC. The median patient age was 64 years (range: 40-82 years). Cylindromas are rare adnexal skin tumours that usually occur in the head and neck area. This article reports a case of benign cylindroma arising in the external auditory canal. Acoustic reflex (AR) threshold and growth were measured in one ear for each of 20 normal-hearing individuals as pressure in the ear canal was varied between +/- 120 mm of H2O. Here, we reveal new mechanisms that control human canal development and highlight for the first time the complex system of canal closure and reopening.
