Comparative Genomic Analysis of Cold-Water Coral-Derived Sulfitobacter faviae: Insights into Their Habitat Adaptation and Metabolism.

Sulfitobacter is one of the major sulfite-oxidizing alphaproteobacterial groups and is often associated with marine algae and corals. Their association with the eukaryotic host cell may have important ecological contexts due to their complex lifestyle and metabolism. However, the role of Sulfitobacter in cold-water corals remains largely unexplored. In this study, we explored the metabolism and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) in two closely related Sulfitobacter faviae strains isolated from cold-water black corals at a depth of ~1000 m by comparative genomic analysis. The two strains shared hig

Cleansing the world of the germ of laziness: hygiene, sanitation, and the Javanese population in Suriname.

In 1915 the Rockefeller Foundation took its hookworm eradication campaign to Suriname, but was soon disappointed because of opposition from its main target group: the Javanese. Moreover, authorities and planters objected to the construction of latrines because of the costs and their belief that the Javanese were "unhygienic". In describing the labor migration from Java to Suriname, I show that this "lack of hygiene" was closely related to the system's organization. I argue that uncleanliness was the consequence of harmful socio-economic and ecological conditions. Secondly I suggest that even t

Geographic isolation promoted species divergence of two closely related Cycas species in distinct river basins.

PREMISE: Understanding the process of species divergence and the mechanisms that drive genetic differentiation among closely related species is essential for explaining the origins of plant biodiversity. Geographic isolation and niche differentiation are key drivers of species divergence. Cycas chenii and C. guizhouensis are morphologically similar sister species from different river basins in Southwest China. Their distinct habitats in nearby river systems make them a potentially good model system for studying species divergence. METHODS: We used double-digest restriction-site-associated DNA

Large-scale tubular and tubular-lamellar intracellular membrane systems of fungi.

Filamentous fungi and oomycetes have four large intracellular membrane systems consisting of tubes, lamellae, or a combination thereof. Such elongated membrane structures can extend for tens of micrometers in hyphal cells, branching and connecting into bundles and networks. These systems are represented by tubular vacuoles, elongated mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, and macroinvaginations of the plasma membrane. They are most developed in xylotrophic and mycorrhiza-forming basidiomycetes. This review examines three membrane systems, excluding the macroinvaginations. Various morphotypes of

Microbiome and aging: Trajectories of microbiome age across human ecosystems and their systemic effects.

The "microbiome age," a computationally derived systemic biosignature, is emerging as a pivotal framework for deciphering host aging trajectories and multi-organ health status. Beyond merely cataloging taxonomic shifts within specific niches, this concept integrates the cumulative biological effects of microbial community structure, functional homeostasis, ecological interactions, and host regulatory dynamics over time. Accumulating evidence indicates that a deviation between chronological and microbiome age-termed the "microbiome age gap"-closely correlates with systemic declines in immunomod

Genesee County REACH Windshield Tours: enhancing health professionals understanding of community conditions that influence infant mortality.

The Genesee County Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health (REACH) program is a community-based program designed to reduce African American infant mortality rates in Flint, Michigan. Genesee County REACH activities address three core themes: fostering community mobilization, reducing racism, and enhancing the maternal-infant health care system. The REACH Community Action Plan was generated using a community-based participatory approach, and is based on a socio-ecological model with interventions focused at the individual, organizational, health system, and community levels. Social ecology of asthma: engaging stakeholders in integrating health behavior theories and practice-based evidence through systems mapping.

This article describes a process for integrating health behavior and social science theories with practice-based insights using participatory systems thinking and diagramming methods largely inspired by system dynamics methods. This integration can help close the gap between research and practice in health education and health behavior by offering a systematic approach to bring together stakeholders across multiple domains. In this process we create a diagram using constructs from multiple health behavior theories at all levels of the social ecological framework as variables in causal loop dia

Anthropogenic ecological change and impacts on mosquito breeding and control strategies in salt-marshes, Northern Territory, Australia.

Darwin, in the tropical north of Australia, is subject to high numbers of mosquitoes and several mosquito-borne diseases. Many of Darwin's residential areas were built in close proximity to tidally influenced swamps, where long-term storm-water run-off from nearby residences into these swamps has led to anthropogenic induced ecological change. When natural wet-dry cycles were disrupted, bare mud-flats and mangroves were transformed into perennial fresh to brackish-water reed swamps. Reed swamps provided year-round breeding habitat for many mosquito species, such that mosquito abundance was les

From disruption to adaptation: Response of phytoplankton communities in representative impounded lakes to China's South-to-North Water Diversion Project.

Impounded lakes are often interconnected in large-scale water diversion projects to form a coordinated system for water allocation and regulation. The alternating runoff and transferred water can significantly impact local ecosystems, which are initially reflected in the sensitive phytoplankton. Nonetheless, limited information is available on the temporal dynamics and assembly patterns of phytoplankton community in impounded lakes responding to continuous and periodic water diversion. Herein, a long-term monitoring from 2013 to 2020 were conducted to systematically investigate the response of

Enhanced Endophytic Colonization of Flavobacterium Promotes Plant Resistance to Fusarium Wilt.

Microbial taxa in the soil microbiome with specific ecological functions play crucial roles in plant health. Flavobacterium is found closely associated with physiological functions that promote plant growth and enhance disease resistance. While cooperative interactions mediated by metabolite exchange can stabilize microbial consortia, the specific interactions between these consortia and plants remain understudied, particularly regarding their application in plant disease control. Here, we isolate a natural microbial consortium comprising Achromobacter, Flavobacterium, and Bacillus strains fro

Pathogens, reservoirs, and vectors involved in the transmission of vector-borne and zoonotic diseases in a Colombian region.

The ecology of vector-borne diseases (VBDs) is an important system of great complexity, which involves the knowledge about the pathogens and animal species entailed in maintaining transmission cycles in a given locality, including those that act as vectors and reservoirs for the transmitted pathogens. To understand the ecology of some VBDs, we studied vectors, reservoirs, and pathogens of different VBDs, including dengue, leishmaniasis, Chagas disease, malaria, Zika, and chikungunya in the municipality of La Mesa, Cundinamarca, Colombia, a locality close to the capital, Bogotá. Vectors and mam

Shedding-weighted network approaches for understanding tuberculosis maintenance in multihost systems using camera traps.

Understanding the dynamics of multihost pathogens, such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTC), requires considering not only host interaction patterns but also variation in infectiousness across species. Network analysis is a useful tool to assess contact structure and disease risk, but it often depends on invasive methods. Camera trapping offers a noninvasive alternative to build co-occurrence networks in complex communities. In this study, we applied a novel approach that integrates shedding into ecological networks, weighing links between species pairs according to their co-occurrence

Analyzing the genetic diversity and biotechnological potential of Leuconostoc pseudomesenteroides by comparative genomics.

Leuconostoc pseudomesenteroides is a lactic acid bacteria species widely exist in fermented dairy foods, cane juice, sourdough, kimchi, apple dumpster, caecum, and human adenoid. In the dairy industry, Ln. pseudomesenteroides strains are usually found in mesophilic starter cultures with lactococci. This species plays a crucial role in the production of aroma compounds such as acetoin, acetaldehyde, and diacetyl, thus beneficially affecting dairy technology. We performed genomic characterization of 38 Ln. pseudomesenteroides from diverse ecological niches to evaluate this species' genetic diver

Ecological surveillance for West Nile in Catalonia (Spain), learning from a five-year period of follow-up.

To enhance early detection of West Nile virus (WNV) transmission, an integrated ecological surveillance system was implemented in Catalonia (north-eastern Spain) from 2007 to 2011. This system incorporated passive and active equine surveillance, periodical testing of chicken sentinels in wetland areas, serosurveillance wild birds and testing of adult mosquitoes. Samples from 298 equines, 100 sentinel chickens, 1086 wild birds and 39 599 mosquitoes were analysed. During these 5 years, no acute WNV infection was detected in humans or domestic animal populations in Catalonia. WNV was not detected

Self-Organized Hyperuniformity in a Minimal Model of Population Dynamics.

By generalizing a class of models recently introduced to account for protracted transients in biological systems, we identify a novel mechanism for hyperuniformity. In this model, competition of individuals over a shared resource serves as feedback that can asymptotically guide the population toward a critical steady state with a divergent individual lifetime. We show that, in its spatially extended form, this many-body model exhibits hyperuniform density fluctuations. Through explicit coarse-graining, we develop a hydrodynamic theory that conforms closely with the results of stochastic simula

Reconstructing the major skull myology of the giant stem-amphibian Mastodonsaurus: A case study for early tetrapods.

The Devonian fish-to-tetrapod transition and the subsequent conquest of land involved multiple amphibious stem and early tetrapod lineages, yet how these animals reduced their dependence on aquatic environments remains uncertain. Feeding is central to this transition, as early tetrapods likely moved from predominantly aquatic suction feeding to jaw-based prey prehension and processing. Although recent functional approaches-including morphometrics, functional morphology and computational modelling-offer new perspectives, their interpretive strength depends on realistic soft-tissue inputs, parti

Multi-System Adaptation to Confinement During the 180-Day Controlled Ecological Life Support System (CELSS) Experiment.

Confinement experiments are essential to prepare long-term space exploration. The 180-day Chinese CELSS (Controlled Ecological Life Support System) study is unique in its design, including a closed-loop system and mid-mission simulation of Mars-like day-night cycle of 24 h 40 min for 36 days (days 72-108). Our aim was to study physiological and psychological consequences of this confinement in four healthy volunteers (one female). CELSS platform consisted of six interconnected modules including four greenhouses. Life support systems were controlled automatically. Body composition, fluid compar

A Novel High-Resolving Method for Genomic PCR-Fingerprinting of Enterobacteria.

We developed a novel PCR-fingerprinting system for differentiation of enterobacterial strains using a single oligonucleotide primer IS1tr that matches the inverted terminal repeats of the IS1 insertion element. Compared to widely used BOX-PCR and ribotyping methods, our system features higher resolution allowing differentiation of closely related isolates that appear identical in BOX-PCR and ribotyping but differ in their phage sensitivity. The IS1-profiling system is less sensitive to the quality of the material and equipment used. At the same time, BOX-PCR is more universal and suitable for

Ecological interactions drive metabolomic diversification in Amazonian Pseudonocardia symbionts.

Fungus-growing ants engage in a multipartite symbiosis, including Pseudonocardia bacteria that produce antifungal metabolites to protect their fungal cultivar from the specialized pathogen Escovopsis. While different bioactive metabolites have been reported from ant-associated Pseudonocardia, most studies have focused on a limited number of strains, leaving the extent of chemical diversity across broader ecological contexts less resolved. Here, we investigated the antagonistic potential and metabolomic repertoires of 36 Pseudonocardia strains isolated from Amazonian Paratrachymyrmex ants. Pair

The Black Fig Fly, Silba adipata (Diptera: Lonchaeidae): Current Knowledge and Future Research Needs for an Invasive Pest of Fig Production.

The presence of Silba adipata in countries outside its native range has raised increasing concern among fig (Ficus carica L.) producers due to its growing economic importance. Information on this lonchaeid remains scarce and is frequently fragmented across regional reports, technical documents, and isolated scientific studies. The lack of consolidated and reliable knowledge on S. adipata, together with its sporadic impacts on figs and frequent confusion with closely related species, has hindered the development of effective and sustainable management strategies. Here, we provide a comprehensiv
