PURPOSE: Paroxysmal Permeability Disorders (PPDs) comprise a variety of diseases characterized by recurrent and transitory increase of endothelial permeability. Idiopathic Systemic Capillary Leak Syndrome (ISCLS) is a rare PPD that leads to an abrupt massive shift of fluids and proteins from the intravascular to the interstitial compartment. In some cases, tissue edema may involve the myocardium, but its role in the development of shock has not been elucidated so far.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Assessment of cardiac involvement during ten life-threatening ISCLS episodes admitted to ICU.

Non-cardiac pulmonary edema in a woman with long-lasting diabetes resulted in a distressing pulmonary fibrosis. It is suggested that pulmonary edema of non-cardiac origin might be more common in diabetes because of increased capillary permeability in this disease. Early recognition is important, and steroid treatment should be instituted to prevent development of pulmonary fibrosis.

Cardiac diseases of cattle may involve valvular structures, myocardium, pericardium, or blood vessels and are manifested by the clinical signs of cardiac dysrhythmias, cardiac murmurs, generalized edema, muffled heart sounds, jugular venous distention, jugular venous pulsations, pulmonary edema, pleural effusion, or ascites. Digoxin, quinidine, and furosemide can be used effectively to control signs of CHF and cardiac arrhythmias. Combination antimicrobial therapy can be successful for cows with infective endocarditis and thrombophlebitis. Pericardial fluid drainage may temporarily improve cat

The objective of this paper is to present the case of a healthy, 19-year-old female collegiate soccer player who developed acute pulmonary edema and acute heart failure in the recovery room after hip labral arthroscopic surgery. The patient's initial diagnosis, of negative pressure pulmonary edema in direct relation to extubation, was questioned when she became hemodynamically unstable. A cardiac biopsy revealed acute pulmonary edema and heart failure secondary to viral myocarditis. The patient was treated and discharged 10 days after admission. Specific and substantiated return-to-play guidel

Scorpion envenomation is common in tropical and subtropical regions. Cardio-respiratory manifestations, mainly cardiogenic shock and pulmonary edema, are the leading causes of death after scorpion envenomation. The mechanism of pulmonary edema remains unclear and contradictory conclusions were published. However, most publications confirm that pulmonary edema has been attributed to acute left ventricular failure. Cardiac failure can result from massive release of catecholamines, myocardial damage induced by the venom or myocardial ischemia. Factors usually associated with the diagnosis of pulm

The lymphatic system is a network of vessels and lymphoid tissues that maintain tissue fluid homeostasis, transport intestinal fat, and regulate immune surveillance. Despite a large body of evidence showing the importance of lymphatic vessels in cardiovascular diseases, the role of cardiac lymphatics has not been extensively investigated. This review highlights the chronology of key discoveries in cardiac lymphatic development and function. In physiology, the cardiac lymphatic system dynamically regulates interstitial fluid drainage to the mediastinal lymph nodes to maintain homeostasis and pr

In heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), cardiogenic edema develops from impaired cardiac function, pathological remodeling, chronic inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, neurohormonal activation, and altered nitric oxide-related pathways. Pre-clinical HFrEF studies have shown that treatment with sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT-2i) stimulates natriuretic and osmotic/diuretic effects, improves overall cardiac function, attenuates maladaptive cardiac remodeling, and reduces chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, and endothelial dysfunction. Here, we review the m

The treatment of cardiogenic shock using inotropic agents and vascular volume expansion places an added burden on the heart. The resultant increase in cardiac work may cause myocardial ischemia and lead to cardiac arrest. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) may be used to treat cardiogenic shock. It supports systemic circulation, assures diastolic perfusion of the myocardium, and reduces cardiac workload. The rise in blood pressure associated with restoring systemic circulation afterloads the heart and can cause left atrial hypertension and pulmonary edema. ECMO does not automatically r

INTRODUCTION: Lymphedema is classified into two main types: secondary lymphedema accompanied by lymph node excision surgery or radiotherapy; and idiopathic lymphedema. Here we experienced a very rare case of lymphatic edema resulting from cardiac surgery that the patient underwent 50 years previously.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 62-year-old woman experienced progressive unilateral lower leg lymphedema for recent years. After undergoing cardiac surgery at another hospital at the age of 12 years, she gradually developed left lower leg edema. The cause of the edema was unclear and it remained untrea

Myocarditis, an inflammatory disease of the heart muscle, is a leading cause of sudden cardiac death in young adults and a major contributor to the development of dilated cardiomyopathy. Many studies highlight immune-mediated cardiomyocyte injury as a major contributor to myocarditis progression; however, myocardial edema may also play a significant role that has been overlooked. Beyond being a passive byproduct of inflammation, edema can mechanically stress the myocardium and create a proinflammatory microenvironment that may stimulate fibrosis, stiffen the myocardium, and impair cardiac func

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence and severity of left atrial (LA) edema after pulmonary vein (PV) ablation and its effect on the cardiac function.
BACKGROUND: Though extensive LA catheter ablation has been demonstrated to be more effective in curing paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF) than segmental ostial pulmonary vein isolation (S-PVI), it might cause life-threatening complications, including congestive heart failure associated with LA edema.
METHODS: Fifty patients underwent S-PVI (Group S) and 27 underwent circumferential PV antrum ablation (Group C)

Among the different causes of pulmonary edema, there are all the clinical situations with hydrosaline overload. A significant (> 70%) bilateral renal artery stenosis or a unilateral stenosis in the presence of a solitary kidney is one possibility. Recurrent acute pulmonary edema not fully explained on a cardiac basis is rather typical for such a disease in a cardiac patient with moderate renal failure aggravated when angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors are used.

Liver cirrhosis is commonly diagnosed with etiologies such as viral hepatitis, alcohol-related liver disease, and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). However, less common causes should be considered, especially in atypical presentations or suboptimal treatment responses. A 67-year-old man presented with massive bilateral pedal edema unresponsive to furosemide. He had well-controlled diabetes and hypertension but no history of alcohol use. Laboratory tests showed normal renal function, mild transaminitis, and mild thrombocytopenia. Imaging revealed liver morphology

With advances and developments in hysteroscopy, cystoscopy, transurethral resection of bladder tumor, and arthroscopy, transurethral resection of prostate (TURP) syndrome has been increasingly reported. TURP syndrome is often accompanied by severe hyponatremia, fluid overload, and a plasma hypotonic state, resulting in heart failure and pulmonary and cerebral edema. Conventional treatment methods, such as intravenous infusion of hyperosmotic saline, can rapidly reverse the downward trend of serum sodium levels in efforts to prevent and treat cerebral edema. However, this may not be suitable fo

We investigated whether use of labetalol, a beta adrenoreceptor blocking antihypertensive agent commonly employed as an alternative to hydralazine, is independently associated with pulmonary edema in women with severe preeclampsia. We retrospectively evaluated women with severe preeclampsia who were given labetalol by intravenous bolus for MAP > 120 mm Hg. Outcome variables included: achieving MAP < 120 mm Hg with < 300 mg of labetalol, incidence of adverse effects of the drug, including pulmonary edema, hypotension, and maternal bradycardia. Total intravenous fluid intake exceeding output (+

OBJECTIVE: To describe the incidence, predisposing conditions, and inciting factors culminating in pulmonary edema in the pregnant patient.
METHODS: A review of 62,917 consecutive pregnancies delivered at our institution from January 1, 1989 to June 1, 1999 was undertaken for the diagnosis of pulmonary edema. Each chart was reviewed for maternal demographics, admission diagnoses, medication use, gestational age at diagnosis, fluid balance, coexisting maternal illness, tocolytic use, evidence of preeclampsia, and diagnostic criteria. After careful review of the records, the most likely cause o

Cardiac disease is a common cause of morbidity in dialysis patients. Traditional and unique risk factors have both been incriminated in the pathogenesis of abnormal cardiac function in these patients. In the present report, we focus on the role of hypocalcemia post parathyroidectomy as a cause of abnormal myocardial function leading to pulmonary edema in a young peritoneal dialysis patient with angiographically-proven normal coronary arteries. The pulmonary edema reversed with correction of the hypocalcemia. Hypocalcemia should be added to the differential diagnosis of contributors to cardiac
