Review of Continuing Medical Education in Tick-Borne Disease for Front-Line Providers.

INTRODUCTION: Considering increasing rates of tick-borne diseases (TBDs) in the United States, we investigated the scope of continuing medical education (CME) available to physicians on these infections. METHODS: We surveyed online medical board and society databases serving front-line primary and emergency/urgent care providers for the availability of TBD-specific CME between March 2022 and June 2022. We recorded and analyzed opportunity title, author, web address, publication year, learning objectives, CME credit values, and CME credit type. RESULTS: We identified 70 opportunities across s

Continuing Education Module-The Childbirth Educator's Role in Teaching Post-Birth Warning Signs.

The U.S. maternal mortality rate has doubled in the past 25 years and has risen despite improvements in health care and an overwhelming global trend in the other direction. Forty-five countries have lower maternal mortality rates than the United States (CIA World Factbook, 2018). For a country that spends more than any other country on health care and more on childbirth-related care than any other area of hospitalization, this is a shockingly poor return on investment. After prolonged attention during pregnancy and birth, there is relatively little attention to the mother's health and well-bei

Inspiring Curiosity and Restoring Humility: The Evolution of Competency-Based Continuing Medical Education.

Dr. David Price and his colleagues, in their article in this issue of Academic Medicine, summarize the findings from recent studies regarding the association of Maintenance of Certification and physicians' learning and improvements in care. Their evaluation demonstrates that physicians often changed their practice because of these educational interventions. In this Invited Commentary, the author argues that, although this finding is reassuring, it may be the right answer to the wrong question. The critical questions the profession faces are whether physicians have the humility to routinely sub

Hepatitis C videoconferencing: the impact on continuing medical education for rural healthcare providers.

This study compared the impact of multipoint videoconferencing (VC) versus standard lecturing (ST) on primary care providers' (MDs, NPs/PAs, and RNs) education regarding hepatitis C virus (HCV). The hypothesis was that the educational impact of teaching through telemedicine is comparable to the traditional method. The aim was to provide participants clinically relevant information and knowledge about the natural history, diagnosis, and management of HCV. Improved knowledge was scored from a 10-item quiz administered before and after the educational intervention. Comparison of the pretest knowl

Elucidating the need for inclusion of burn in graduate and continuing dermatologic medical education.

The management of acute burn wound and chronic burn scar typically involves burn specialists, yet patients often rely on dermatologists to address post-burn sequelae associated with burn injury and scar. However, there is a lack of burn-specific education, exposure, and overall confidence in managing burn within the field of dermatology. This research correspondence provides a brief review of published literature pertaining to themes such as the lack of burn resources and a potential increased risk of skin cancer after a burn injury. Additionally, this correspondence explains the rationale for

Impacts of continuing education for health professionals in primary health care: A scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Continuing Health Education (CHE) is an essential strategy for the continuous qualification of Primary Health Care (PHC) professionals, promoting knowledge updating and improving the quality of services. In Brazil, this process is especially relevant given the challenges faced by the Unified Health System (SUS) and the need for training aligned with local demands. Understanding the impact of CHE actions in PHC is crucial to identify their effects on professional practice and health outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To identify and analyze the evidence on the impacts of CHE for health profess

[The preference for the final digits in blood pressure determination: a continuing education experience].

The CRONICAT program is developing a Project for the Control of Hypertension in three areas of central Catalonia. In the analysis of the blood pressure data of the registry of patients from this project, carried out 18 months after its beginning, it was found that a high proportion of blood pressure (BP) readings showed 0 or 5 as the terminal digit (57.3% and 16.6% in diastolic BP, and 66.6% and 11.8% in systolic BP, respectively). To improve the quality of the reading two continuing education activities were carried out; a seminar where a practical session of blood pressure measurement was de

Continuing Medical Education Solutions: Building Access to Healthcare Knowledge in a Resource-Constrained Country.

Keeping up-to-date is imperative for healthcare workers, given the rapidly evolving nature of modern medicine. However, this task is logistically challenging in resource-constrained settings where electricity and internet access are unreliable. Continuing Medical Education Solutions is a series of technology solutions developed by Techies Without Borders (TWB) to bridge this gap. The technology enables improved access to high-quality medical education and point-of-care resources for healthcare professionals in low-resource settings worldwide. TWB has partnered with multiple healthcare institut
