Case Report: Delayed treatment of tuberculosis of the elbow joint.

Extrapulmonary tuberculosis (TB) is known to occur in the musculoskeletal system, including the elbow joints. These cases are rarely found because the signs and symptoms are not specific to extrapulmonary TB or other diseases. We report a case of a 24-year-old male, who complained about pain in his left elbow and noticed swelling. Initially, he complained about pain all over his left arm, after several reflexology massages to alleviate his toothache. However, instead of seeking medical treatment, he visited a traditional massage therapist every week without improvement in his left arm pain inc…

[Progress on the treatment of terrible triad injury of elbow joint].

As to terrible triad injury of elbow joint, because of the complexity of the surrounding anatomy of the elbow joint, the limited biomechanical study, the difficult treatments, and the poor prognosis, the choice of the treatment scheme is still controversial. This article summarizes the anatomy, injury mechanism, surgical treatment and prognosis of elbow joint by retrieving a large number of references. Currently, there are various surgical treatments for triad injury of elbow joint, but due to individual differences, the clinical efficacy is mostly uncertain. In the treatment of triad injury o…

Aspiration of the elbow joint for treating radial head fractures.

BACKGROUND: Radial head fracture is the most common fracture of the elbow. It usually results from a fall onto an outstretched arm. In 1954, Mason classified these fractures into type 1 (undisplaced), type 2 (simple displaced), and type 3 (comminuted fractures). Aspiration of the elbow joint aims to relieve pressure in the elbow joint and has been used as an initial treatment option for radial head fractures. However, it is an invasive technique with the potential for complications such as infection and injury to nerves and vessels. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects (benefits and harms) of el…

[The elbow joint - a diagnostic challenge : anatomy, biomechanics, and pathology].

The elbow is one of the most commonly injured joints in sports activities. In particular, weight lifters, golfers, tennis players, and pitchers are affected. Injuries in sports involving overhead throwing are commonly based on the pathophysiologic model of valgus extension overload syndrome. The injuries are commonly complex and demand a good knowledge of the symptoms, the exact anatomy, and the biomechanics to arrive at a precise radiologic diagnosis. The characteristic patterns of injury that occur in specific sports activities are related to a combination of increased varus or valgus and ex

Fracture-dislocations of the elbow joint--strategy for treatment and results.

Between January 1993 and December 1996, 41 patients with fracture dislocation of the elbow joint were treated in our department. In 28 patients (median age 46 years, range 15-77 years; 16 male, 12 female), a clinical and radiological follow-up was obtained after median 34 months (range 12-59 months). In addition to the humero-ulnar dislocation, isolated fractures were present in 13 patients and combined fractures in 15 (all with involvement of the radial head). Primary neurological deficits were found in 7 and open fractures in 3 patients. In 7 patients, primary definitive surgical therapy was…

[Ultrasound anatomy and pathology of the elbow joint in the child and in the adult].

The aim of this study was to evaluate the sonographic anatomy of the elbow joint in children and adults and to point out the indications for an ultrasound examination after elbow joint trauma. The study was carried out using isolated joint specimens, muscle specimens and cadaver limbs. Additionally, a clinical trial was performed using high-resolution ultrasound probes (7.5-12 MHz). When assessing standard sections, one has to consider both the position of the elbow joint in the frontal plane and the position of the forearm during pro- and supination. The outstanding advantage of this method, …

[Technique and value of imaging methods in the assessment of the elbow joint].

Roentgenography is the standard diagnostic tool for study of skeletal injuries and diseases around the elbow. The basic x-ray examination of the elbow includes the two standard static positions (frontal and lateral). If necessary oblique views are required to evaluate the radial head and the coronoid process. Dynamic examination (flexion-extension, ulnar-radial deviation) is indicated when instabilities are suspected. Indication, technique and interpretation of these images should be of general knowledge in the common practice of the orthopaedic surgeon. For further evaluation in unclear condi

Simultaneous dislocation of the elbow and the proximal radio-ulnar joint.

Simultaneous dislocation of the elbow and the proximal radio-ulnar joint is rare. Two children with this uncommon injury are reported. One child had a transverse divergent dislocation that was treated successfully by closed reduction. The other had a convergent dislocation (or translocation of the radius and ulna) which needed open reduction. Convergent dislocation is even rarer than transverse divergent dislocation, and this is believed to be the first time it has been reported.

[Radius head resection as a reconstructive measure of the elbow joint].

The authors followed up 55 patients to check on the clinical manifestations prevailing ten years after resection of the head of the radius with particular reference to the pattern presented in the radiocarpal joint. Particular attention was paid to functional and roentgenological changes in the regions of the elbow and wrist. Overall results were unsatisfactory, although a clear improvement in function could be seen in old fractures of the head of the radius, although the function did not improve beyond that achieved by primary resection of the head. No convincing improvement was obtained in o

[A clinical study on arthrography of the elbow joint (author's transl)].

There are many patients who visit a clinic with some complaints at the elbow joint. In such cases, it is customary to evaluate radiographs in making diagnosis. However, it is often difficult to interpret the X-ray films due to structural complexity of the elbow joint. Although in some cases arthrography is performed, there is neither standard technique nor standard method of projection established, hence the evaluation of the arthrogram is often quite difficult. The purpose of this paper thereby is to study the role of the arthrography of the elbow joint as a diagnostic tool second to plain X-…

The effect of interposition arthroplasty on the contact mechanics of the elbow joint.

Dysfunctional elbow osteoarthritis poses a therapeutic dilemma in young patients with high activity levels and corresponding demands on elbow mobility. In selected cases, interposition arthroplasty of the elbow remains a viable salvage option and alternative to primary prosthetic replacement. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of interposition arthroplasty on elbow joint contact mechanics, comparing Achilles tendon (AT) and fascia lata (FL) grafts. Ten fresh-frozen human elbow specimens underwent static axial loading (50-400 N) at 20° flexion in native state and fo…

Treatment of Traumatic Elbow Instability With an Internal Joint Stabilizer.

PURPOSE: Current options for treating elbow instability include bony and/or ligamentous fixation with orthosis or cast immobilization, transarticular cross-pinning, temporary bridge plating, and hinged or rigid external fixation. Our purpose was to evaluate the recently developed internal joint stabilizer (IJS), which acts as an internal external fixator of the elbow. Our primary end point was to assess whether use of the device results in a stable and congruent reduction of the ulnohumeral and radiocapitellar joints in patients with acute or chronic elbow instability as a result of trauma. In

[Progress on diagnosis and treatment of the terrible triad of elbow joint].

The terrible triad of elbow is a kind of complex elbow fracture dislocation, after reduction, it should get a concentric circles joint reduction and elbow stability, if radial and coronoid process fractures is less piece, the conservative treatment can be performed, but regularly follow up is mandatory. If surgical treatment was chosen, radial head fractures and the lateral collateral ligament complex must be repaired. Single lateral approach can be used and also can be combined with anteromedial approach in surgery. Some problems are still controversial in the treatment of coronoid process fr

Prediction of elbow joint contact mechanics in the multibody framework.

Computational multibody musculoskeletal models of the elbow joint that are capable of simultaneous and accurate predictions of muscle and ligament forces, along with cartilage contact mechanics can be immensely useful in clinical practice. As a step towards producing a musculoskeletal model that includes the interaction between cartilage and muscle loading, the goal of this study was to develop subject-specific multibody models of the elbow joint with discretized humerus cartilage representation interacting with the radius and ulna cartilages through deformable contacts. The contact parameters…

[Operative corrections of posttraumatic deformities of the elbow joint in children].

Posttraumatic deformities with need for surgical correction are rare and demanding in the pediatric population. The consequences of a bad outcome may last a life time. The best prevention of deformities around the elbow joint is proper initial treatment. The most common deformities are cubitus varus, cubitus valgus, chronic dislocation of the radial head and pseudarthrosis of the radial condyle. In contrast to the wide spread opinion to await the effect of the further growth, the deformity should be treated contemporarily to the underlying injury. This strategy will optimize the outcome. In sp…
