A Conductive Bioengineered Cardiac Patch for Myocardial Infarction Treatment by Improving Tissue Electrical Integrity.

Conductive scaffolds are of great value for constructing functional myocardial tissues and promoting tissue reconstruction in the treatment of myocardial infarction (MI). Here, a novel scaffold composed of silk fibroin and polypyrrole (SP50) with a typical sponge-like porous structure and electrical conductivity similar to the native myocardium is developed. An electroactive engineered cardiac patch (SP50 ECP) with a certain thickness is constructed by applying electrical stimulation (ES) to the cardiomyocytes (CMs) on the scaffold. SP50 ECP can significantly express cardiac marker protein (α-

Effects of electrically conductive nano-biomaterials on regulating cardiomyocyte behavior for cardiac repair and regeneration.

Myocardial infarction (MI) represents one of the most prevalent cardiovascular diseases, with a highly relevant and impactful role in public health. Despite the therapeutic advances of the last decades, MI still begets extensive death rates around the world. The pathophysiology of the disease correlates with cardiomyocyte necrosis, caused by an imbalance in the demand of oxygen to cardiac tissues, resulting from obstruction of the coronary flow. To alleviate the severe effects of MI, the use of various biomaterials exhibit vast potential in cardiac repair and regeneration, acting as native ext

Conductive electrospun scaffolds with electrical stimulation for neural differentiation of conjunctiva mesenchymal stem cells.

An electrical stimulus is a new approach to neural differentiation of stem cells. In this work, the neural differentiation of conjunctiva mesenchymal stem cells (CJMSCs) on a new 3D conductive fibrous scaffold of silk fibroin (SF) and reduced graphene oxide (rGo) were examined. rGo (3.5% w/w) was dispersed in SF-acid formic solution (10% w/v) and conductive nanofibrous scaffold was fabricated using the electrospinning method. SEM and TEM microscopies were used for fibrous scaffold characterization. CJMSCs were cultured on the scaffold and 2 electrical impulse models (Current 1:115 V/m, 100-Hz

Nano liquid metal for the preparation of a thermally conductive and electrically insulating material with high stability.

Dielectric materials typically demonstrate poor thermal conductivity, which limits their application in emerging technologies in integrated circuits, computer chips, light-emitting diode lamps, and other electronic packaging areas. Using liquid metal microdroplets as inclusions to develop thermal interface materials has been shown to effectively improve thermal pathways, but this type of material may become electroconductive with the application of a concentrated compressive stress. In this study, an isotropic nano-liquid metal thermally-conductive and electrically-insulating material (nLM-THE

Electrical stimulation via a biocompatible conductive polymer directs retinal progenitor cell differentiation.

The goal of this study was to simulate in vitro the spontaneous electrical wave activity associated with retinal development and investigate if such biometrically designed signals can enhance differentiation of mouse retinal progenitor cells (mRPC). To this end, we cultured cells on an electroconductive transplantable polymer, polypyrrole (PPy) and measured gene expression and morphology of the cells. Custom-made 8-well cell culture chambers were designed to accommodate PPy deposited onto indium tin oxide-coated (ITO) glass slides, with precise control of the PPy film thickness. mRPCs were iso

Presenting rhythm in sudden deaths temporally proximate to discharge of TASER conducted electrical weapons.

OBJECTIVES: Sudden deaths proximate to use of conducted electrical weapons (CEWs) have been attributed to cardiac electrical stimulation. The rhythm in death caused by rapid, cardiac electrical stimulation usually is ventricular fibrillation (VF); electrical stimulation has not been reported to cause asystole or pulseless electrical activity (PEA). The authors studied the presenting rhythms in sudden deaths temporally proximate to use of TASER CEWs to estimate the likelihood that these deaths could be caused by cardiac electrical stimulation. METHODS: This was a retrospective review of CEW-as

Magnetic susceptibility and electrical conductivity of metallic dental materials and their impact on MR imaging artifacts.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that dental materials vary significantly in MR-relevant material parameters-magnetic susceptibility and electrical conductivity, and that knowledge of these parameters may be used to estimate the quality of MR imaging in the presence of devices made of such materials. METHODS: Magnetic susceptibility, electrical conductivity and artifacts were evaluated for 45 standardized cylindrical samples of dental alloys and amalgams. Magnetic susceptibility was determined by fitting the phase of gradient-echo MR images to numerically modeled d

Electrical conductance of fissure enamel in recently erupted molar teeth as related to caries status.

Pit-and-fissure caries lesions contribute greatly to the caries incidence in permanent molar teeth in children. To date, the diagnosis of occlusal caries is still performed mainly by visual inspection, periodically aided by bite-wing radiography. However, in detecting small occlusal carious lesions, these methods perform inadequately, especially in low caries prevalence populations or individuals. The use of electrical conductance measurements (ECMs) has been evaluated to improve the diagnosis of small occlusal carious lesions. The aim of this study was to monitor the electrical conductance of

Effects of some components of ischemia on electrical activity and reentry in the canine ventricular conducting system.

We used intracellular microelectrodes to study the electrophysiological effects of combinations of components of ischemia and their relation to the occurrence of ventricular arrhythmias in the specialized conducting system of isolated canine right ventricles. The middle area of the free wall was exposed to various test solutions in the center compartment of a three-chambered bath; the base and apex of the preparation were superfused with normal Tyrode's solution in the outer control compartments. Hypoxia (Po2 40 mm Hg), lactic acidosis (pH 6.5), and orciprenaline (10(-6) M), either alone or co

Simultaneously mapping topography, surface electrical, and mechanical properties by scanning ion conductance microscopy.

Multi-parameter single-cell analysis and imaging are crucial for understanding fundamental cellular behavior and properties. Scanning ion conductance microscopy (SICM) is a powerful scanning probe microscope technique for studying the physical characteristics of individual cells under physiological conditions using a glass nanopipette as the scanning probe. Previously, SICM has been successfully developed for topography imaging, surface charge/potential mapping, and stiffness mapping of adherent cells. In this report, we demonstrated the integration of these three imaging modes to acquire thre

Junctional conductance of retinal AII amacrine cell electrical synapses is decreased by NMDA receptors.

Retinal AII amacrine cells are extensively coupled together by electrical synapses. Changes to the strength of these synapses affect how signals are routed through rod and cone retinal pathways during scotopic and photopic vision. Plasticity at these electrical synapses has not, to date, been characterized using electrophysiological approaches. We investigated the effects of NMDA receptor (NMDAR) activation on electrical coupling between AII cells using dual whole-cell patch-clamp electrophysiology in mouse retinal slices. NMDAR activation substantially decreased junctional conductance between

Lamotrigine is associated with a nonpathological increase in cardiac electrical conduction in people with and without heart disease.

OBJECTIVE: The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning that lamotrigine slows cardiac conduction, leading to arrhythmias in people with heart disease (HD). This is the first study to investigate the within-person changes in electrocardiographic (ECG) metrics and prevalence of ECG abnormalities when on versus off lamotrigine, in people with and without a history of HD. METHODS: The cohort includes 237 people with ECG both on and off lamotrigine, stratified by a history of HD (n = 97). The within-person percent change in heart rate and ECG metrics (PR, QRS, and heart rate-correct

CP/HA/HGF Conductive Composite Scaffolds with Synergistic Electrical Stimulation for Nerve Regeneration.

The challenge of nerve regeneration stems from the diminished vitality of mature neurons post-injury. The construction of a suitable microenvironment at the injury site to facilitate axonal regeneration is a crucial aspect of nerve injury repair. In this work, a conductive and biocompatible composite material, CP/HA/HGF, is designed by grafting polypyrrole onto chitosan and compounding it with hyaluronic acid and functional short peptides for neural regeneration. Comprehensive material characterizations shows that CP/HA/HGF holds the potential as a scaffold material based on its good overall p

Significant delayed conduction and characteristic ventricular tachycardias in patients with cardiac sarcoidosis and electrical storm.

INTRODUCTION: Electrical storm (ES) of ventricular tachyarrhythmias (VTAs) is an important cause of sudden death in patients with cardiac sarcoidosis (CS). VTAs in CS are associated with myocardial scarring and inflammation. However, little is known about the risk factors of ES in patients with CS and VTAs. The objective of this study is to clarify the characteristics and risk factors for the development of ES in patients with CS. METHODS: The study population included consecutive 52 patients with CS and sustained VTA. Twenty-five out of 52 patients experienced ES. We evaluated clinical chara

High-Spin (S = 1) Blatter-Based Diradical with Robust Stability and Electrical Conductivity.

Triplet ground-state organic molecules are of interest with respect to several emerging technologies but usually show limited stability, especially as thin films. We report an organic diradical, consisting of two Blatter radicals, that possesses a triplet ground state with a singlet-triplet energy gap, ΔEST ≈ 0.4-0.5 kcal mol-1 (2J/k ≈ 220-275 K). The diradical possesses robust thermal stability, with an onset of decomposition above 264 °C (TGA). In toluene/chloroform, glassy matrix, and fluid solution, an equilibrium between two conformations with ΔEST ≈ 0.4 kcal mol-1 and ΔEST ≈ -0.7 kcal mo

Influence of pH, electrical conductivity and ageing on the extractability of benzo[a]pyrene in two contrasting soils.

Higher soil pH and electrical conductivity (EC) were suspected to result in higher extractability and bioavailability of benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) in soils. In this study, we investigated the influence of pH, EC and ageing on the extractability of B[a]P in two contracting soils (varied largely in soil texture, clay mineralogy and organic carbon content) over 4 months. Dilute sodium hydroxide (0.2 mol L-1) and sodium chloride (0.1 mol L-1) solutions were used to adjust soil pH and EC either separately or simultaneously. Extractability of B[a]P in these soils was monitored using a mild solvent extr
