Hyperventilation-stage electroencephalography in lateral temporal lobe epilepsy.

BACKGROUND: To observe spike activity in electroencephalograms (EEGs), patients with symptomatic partial epilepsy are rarely monitored during the hyperventilation stages. CASE: A 38-year-old woman suffered from a ruptured arteriovenous malformation in the left temporal lobe. One and a half years later, the patient experienced her first generalized convulsion. EEG showed small spikes in the posterior of the left temporal lobe, which was observed during the hyperventilation and posthyperventilation stages. Because the location of the spikes correlated with the site of the lesion as observed fro

Wireless high-density electroencephalography in the perioperative setting.

BACKGROUND: Electroencephalographic (EEG) systems used in the operating room are constrained to frontal channels, providing limited neuroanatomical insights into altered perioperative brain states. Our objective is to present pragmatic strategies for placing whole-scalp, high-density EEG systems perioperatively that enable more comprehensive analysis. NEW METHOD: We present the successful implementation of wireless high-density (72-channel) EEG in the perioperative setting for the ongoing Caffeine, Postoperative Delirium, and Change in Outcomes after Surgery (CAPACHINOS-2) clinical trial (NCT

An electroencephalography connectome predictive model of craving for methamphetamine.

BACKGROUND: Methamphetamine use disorder (MUD) is characterized by prominent psychological craving and its relapsing nature. Previous studies have linked trait impulsivity and abstinence duration to drug use, but the neural substrates of drug cue-induced craving and its relationship with these traits remain unclear in MUD. METHODS: We acquired high-density resting-state electroencephalography (EEG) after participants watched a five-minute video demonstrating methamphetamine use. Combining precise source imaging to reconstruct brain activities with connectome predictive modeling (CPM), we buil…

The Utility of Electroencephalography in Guiding General Anesthesia in Children.

Traditional pediatric anesthetic dosing using pharmacokinetic estimates based on age and weight is often imprecise, frequently leading to oversedation. Intraoperative electroencephalography (EEG) allows visualization of the brain's response to anesthetic agents in real time, facilitating precise titration of anesthetic drug doses optimized for the individual child. The goal of EEG-guided anesthesia management is to maintain an optimal state of hypnosis during various stages of the procedure while minimizing hemodynamic instability and other adverse effects of anesthesia. This is especially imp…

Electroencephalography, Magnetoencephalography, and Cognitive Reserve: A Systematic Review.

ObjectiveCognitive reserve (CR) is the capacity to adapt to (future) brain damage without any or only minimal clinical symptoms. The underlying neuroplastic mechanisms remain unclear. Electrocorticography (ECOG), electroencephalography (EEG), and magnetoencephalography (MEG) may help elucidate the brain mechanisms underlying CR, as CR is thought to be related to efficient utilization of remaining brain resources. The purpose of this systematic review is to collect, evaluate, and synthesize the findings on neural correlates of CR estimates using ECOG, EEG, and MEG.MethodWe examined articles tha…

Electroencephalography at the time of Covid-19 pandemic in Italy.

OBJECTIVE: During the Covid-19 pandemic, government restrictions limited health care to urgent needs. Neurophysiology centers had to suddenly reschedule their activities, with a lack of specific recommendations about electroencephalography (EEG) execution. During the pandemic phase 1, we launched an online survey to understand the flaws and strengths of the EEG management in Italy at the time of Covid-19 pandemic. METHODS: A 45-item online survey (published from April 16 to 30, 2020), endorsed by the Italian Society of Clinical Neurophysiology (SINC), the Italian League Against epilepsy (LICE…

Electroencephalography in Primary Progressive Aphasia and Apraxia of Speech.

BACKGROUND: Past research has demonstrated that electroencephalography (EEG) is sensitive to what we now know as Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA); however, the EEG profiles of patients with Primary Progressive Apraxia of Speech (PPAOS) and PPA, in the context of current consensus criteria, have not been studied. AIMS: The primary goal of this study was to explore the EEG profiles of patients of the nonfluent/ agrammatic variant of PPA (agPPA) and PPAOS. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Three patients with agPPA and five patients with PPAOS (two with aphasia) completed a head MRI scan and clinical EE…

Usefulness of electroencephalography for the management of epilepsy in emergency departments.

INTRODUCTION: Electroencephalography (EEG) is an essential diagnostic tool in epilepsy. Its use in emergency departments (ED) is usually restricted to the diagnosis and management of non-convulsive status epilepticus (NCSE). However, EDs may also benefit from EEG in the context of other situations in epilepsy. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective observational study using the clinical histories of patients treated at our hospital's ED for epileptic seizures and suspicion of NCSE and undergoing EEG studies in 2015 and 2016. We collected a series of demographic and clinical variables. RESULTS…

[Electroencephalography in children with ADHD started with neurofeedback therapy].

BACKGROUND: ADHD is characterized by lack of attention and concentration, hyperactivity and impulsivity and occurrs in about 3-5% of school-age children. Analysis of EEG plays an important role in comprehending the character of disturbed brain processes. Nowadays significant predictive values of EEG in response to neurostimulation treatment are being looked for. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Visual analysis included results of standard EEG examination of 109 children who underwent neurofeedback treatment in the years 2007-2009. These children were at the age range from 6 to 17 years and boys were pre

Influence of antiepileptic drugs on amplitude-integrated electroencephalography.

Amplitude-integrated electroencephalography monitors different aspects of cerebral function in neonatal intensive care units. To examine the influence of various antiepileptic drugs on the background patterns and voltage of amplitude-integrated electroencephalography recordings, we screened 191 tracing segments originating from 77 newborns treated with antiepileptic drugs. The influences of lorazepam, diazepam, and phenobarbital given as bolus doses, and midazolam and lidocaine given in continuous infusion, were examined. Voltages and patterns before and after drug administration were assessed…

Electroencephalography in holoprosencephaly: findings in children without epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the electroencephalographic characteristics of patients with holoprosencephaly (HPE) without epilepsy. METHODS: We evaluated the electroencephalograms (EEGs) of 18 children with HPE who lacked a history of seizures. Neuroimaging studies were assessed for severity of HPE and thalamic non-separation and the presence of dorsal cysts and cortical malformations. RESULTS: Hypersynchronous theta activity occurred in 50 and 60% of EEGs during wakefulness or drowsiness/sleep, respectively, and correlated with the grade of thalamic non-separation (p<0.05). Hypersynchronous beta

Correlation of electroencephalography and the active and inactive forms of neurocysticercosis.

We studied the interictal EEG of 50 epileptic patients (28 males, 22 females) who had parenchymal neurocysticercosis, diagnosed by CAT/MRI of the brain, positive immunological reaction for cysticercosis in cerebral spinal fluid or both. Age ranged from 5 to 61 years old; the mean age of onset was 24.2 +/- 12.2 years. Thirty-six patients had generalized seizures, 13 partial seizures with secondarily generalized seizures, and 1 had complex partial seizures. Twenty-two patients had parenchymal calcifications (inactive form); 21 had parenchymal cysts (active form) and 7 had both. EEG was abnormal

[Significance of electroencephalography in the physical examination of children with encopresis].

At an one time transversal examination 28 of 36 children with encopresis exhibited abnormal findings, increased incidence of sharp waves, a back ground that was too slow for their age and subcortical dysfunctions was striking. The abnormalities are approached as constitutional risks and maturational retardation with increased environmental propensity. Increased frequency of enuresis and encopresis in premature craniosynostosis was found. Electroencephalography should be used in paediatric and child psychiatric examination as a not burdening screening method for clarifying the aetiologic condit…

[Prognostic value of electroencephalography in non-traumatic comas].

We recorded an EEG within the first few days of coma in 100 patients without history of trauma or drug intoxication, in 50 after cardiac arrest, and in 50 in coma of other, chiefly metabolic etiologies. The EEG findings were classified in 5 categories (I-V) in terms of increasing severity. We were especially interested in the question whether the degree of early EEG disturbances allows prognostic conclusions regarding the clinical fate of patients one month after the beginning of coma. It was found that very severe EEG changes (Grad IV-V) indicate a poor prognosis (death, persistent vegetative

Electroencephalography and computerized transaxial tomography in epilepsy diagnosis.

Over a 6-month period 89 patients with epileptic seizures were systematically examined by EEGs and CT. Forty-two percent of all cases showed pathological findings in CT compared to 89% with abnormal EEGs. CT is very useful in identifying organic lesions in the epileptic patient. CT identified 11 cases of supratentorial tumour which were correctly localized by EEG. In patients with seizures after trauma or encephalitis the EEG abnormalities were more than could be detected by CT. The EEG and CT findings in cerebrovascular disorders, alcoholism and other diseases are discussed. A remarkable resu
