Tissue from a lung biopsy specimen was submitted for electron microscopy and x-ray energy-dispersive analysis of ferruginous bodies. The presence of these entities had been used as a factor in concluding an asbestos-related tissue response. The purpose of this study was to examine the long-term retention of F and Ti in dentin after a brief application of 1% TiF4. Six facets of exposed dentin in each of four beagle dogs were treated for 10 sec or 1 min with a 1% solution of TiF4. Four control facets in a fifth dog were left untreated and extracted after 12 weeks. The TiF4-treated teeth were harvested after 4, 8, and 22 weeks and analyzed for F and Ti with an electron microprobe. A case of classical RA developed severe interstitial pulmonary disease and respiratory failure while on chrysotherapy. A high concentration of gold was found in lung tissue. Electron microscopic and electron probe examinations confirmed the presence of gold in the interstitial and intra-alveolar macrophages. The clinical course and possible pathogenic mechanism were discussed.

Images of the distribution of 127I and 129I have been obtained by means of SIMS, in Mouse thyroid gland, after tracer injection. Profiles analysis performed on 60 microns area express the relative amount of iodine in thyroid vesicles. Isotopic ratio show a large discrepancy from a follicle to an other which is in situ in agreement with the functional heterogeneity of the gland. The interest of the method to study the kinetics of iodine pools is discussed.

The simple method allowed a prompt distinction in stones poor and rich in cholesterol and of other ingredients. The method needs smallest test quantities (2 mg) in regard for a conservative medicamentous therapy.

The present investigation was performed to examine the possibility of using energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis (EDX) to obtain information on epidermal reactions at irritant dermatitis. The elemental redistribution in the stratum germinativum and stratum spinosum of the guinea-pig epidermis after intradermal injection of a chromate and a nickel solution was studied in thick cryo-sections. Energy dispersive X-ray analysis is recognized as a most useful technique in research. Its diagnostic applications are being rapidly developed. We describe a case of corneal, lenticular and retinal damage in an eye without a documented history of trauma. Scanning energy dispersive X-ray analysis of foreign material in the lens helped to elucidate the probable cause of the injury. The medico-legal implications of this case are briefly discussed.

The aim of this study was to register the fluoride distribution in cavity walls following exposure to a fluoride-containing amalgam in vitro. Class V cavities were prepared on buccal and lingual surfaces in ten extracted premolars and filled with a fluoride-containing (experimental) or a conventional (control) amalgam. After storing the teeth in artificial saliva for three months, the fillings were removed and the cavity walls analyzed with an electron microprobe. The cavity walls which had been exposed to the conventional amalgam did not show F concentrations above the detection limit (0.15%)
