Disruptive behavior within the workplace.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of disruptive behavior among nurses in the healthcare workplace, the details that are associated with its occurrence, and the organizational procedures utilized when disruptive incidents occur. BACKGROUND: Healthcare workers have a higher risk of experiencing disruptive behavior among staff in the workplace compared to other industries, and nurses are more susceptible than other healthcare workers. METHOD: A quantitative, descriptive, survey design asked nurses if they had experienced disruptive behavior within the past 12 mo

E-mail support as an adjunct to cognitive-behavioral group therapy for social anxiety disorder: Impact on dropout and outcome.

The present study evaluates the impact of semi-individualized e-mail support as an adjunct to cognitive behavioral group therapy (CBGT) for social anxiety disorder (SAD) on dropout and outcome. The effectiveness of additional semi-individualized e-mail support was evaluated for the whole sample and for a subsample of patients at risk of dropping out of therapy. A total of 91 patients with SAD were allocated either to the intervention condition (CBGT with e-mail support), or to the control condition (CBGT without e-mail support). Anxiety symptoms, depression, global symptomatology and life sati

[Survey national professional practice on the use of the laryngeal mask].

BACKGROUND: This survey aimed to describe the current use of laryngeal mask (LM) and to define the difference of use according to a group defined like experts. METHODS: A self-questionnaire available on Internet was sent by e-mail to French anesthesiologists. Results were compared by a Chi(2) test between anesthesiologists according to their expertise defined by a >750 LM use. RESULTS: Nine hundred and fifty-three anesthesiologists answered to the survey. Only 19 reported never using LM and 37% of responders were defined as expert. More than half of the MAR used the ideal weight to set the s

Exploring the "active ingredients" of an online smoking intervention: a randomized factorial trial.

INTRODUCTION: Research needs to systematically identify which components increase online intervention effectiveness (i.e., active ingredients). This study explores the effects of 4 potentially important design features in an Internet-based, population-level smoking intervention. METHODS: Smokers (n = 1,865) were recruited from a large health care organization, regardless of readiness to quit. Using a full factorial design, participants were randomized to 1 of the 2 levels of each experimental factor (message tone [prescriptive vs. motivational], navigation autonomy [dictated vs. not], e-mail

Patient-generated secure messages and eVisits on a patient portal: are patients at risk?

BACKGROUND: Patient portals are becoming increasingly common, but the safety of patient messages and eVisits has not been well studied. Unlike patient-to-nurse telephonic communication, patient messages and eVisits involve an asynchronous process that could be hazardous if patients were using it for time-sensitive symptoms such as chest pain or dyspnea. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 7322 messages (6430 secure messages and 892 eVisits). To assess the overall risk associated with the messages, we looked for deaths within 30 days of the message and hospitalizations and emergency departmen

Automated, computer generated reminders and increased detection of gonorrhoea, chlamydia and syphilis in men who have sex with men.

BACKGROUND: Guidelines recommend frequent screening of men who have sex with men (MSM) for sexually transmissible infections (STIs) but few interventions have demonstrated increased testing and detection of bacterial STIs among MSM in controlled studies. METHODS: We used automated text message and email reminders generated by computer assisted self-interview (CASI) to remind MSM to retest for syphilis. We compared clinic visits, STI testing and detection rates over 12 month between men receiving reminders (reminder group) and men not offered the reminders (concurrent control group). RESULTS:

Digital Isolation and Depression Risk in Older Adults Using the National Health and Aging Trends Study Database: 8-Year Longitudinal Study.

BACKGROUND: The rapid advancement of digital technologies has profoundly transformed communication practices. However, this technological revolution has also led to "digital isolation," a form of social disconnection caused by limited or absent engagement with digital communication tools, including smartphones, computers, email, and the internet. This issue is particularly concerning for older adults, as it may increase their likelihood of developing mental health disorders, with depression being a primary concern. Although digital isolation has been studied less frequently than traditional so

Bringing HIV partner services into the age of social media and mobile connectivity.

BACKGROUND: A substantial proportion of recent sex partners named by persons with sexually transmitted infections are not notified about their exposure despite attempts by public health officials. Although text messaging (texting) and Internet-based communications (dating Web sites, e-mail, etc) are used by a large segment of the public for regular communications, these tools have been underused for partner services (PS). METHODS: We augmented PS for HIV in New York City using texting and Internet-based means to contact persons for whom traditional information (landline telephone number, post

E-mail surveys assist investigation and response: a university conjunctivitis outbreak.

A conjunctivitis outbreak affecting more than 200 individuals occurred on a university campus in Evanston, Illinois, USA, in spring 2002. An investigation was conducted jointly by the Evanston Department of Health and the Illinois Department of Public Health. A combination of e-mail and traditional telephone-based surveys demonstrated that wearing contact lenses was a risk factor for any conjunctivitis and bilateral conjunctivitis, whereas using glasses was protective. Laboratory and epidemiological evidence suggested that the outbreak was caused by a viral pathogen that eluded characterizatio

Concerns about sources of electromagnetic interference in patients with pacemakers.

Electromagnetic noise is rapidly increasing in our environment so electromagnetic interference (EMI) with pacemakers (PM) may become a more important problem despite technological improvements in PM. The aim of this study was to evaluate the kinds of EMI which affect the quality of life of PM patients. The participants (1,942 Japanese Association for Pacemaker Patients: Pacemaker-Tomonokai) were asked to respond to a questionnaire about their major EMI troubles, and 1,567 patients (80.7%) responded by mail. The main concerns were from mobile telephones (MT) (39%), magnetic resonance imaging (M

The effect of electron beam irradiation on forensic evidence. 1. Latent print recovery on porous and non-porous surfaces.

The recent use of the postal system as a means of delivering anthrax spores via several contaminated envelopes has led to the selective irradiation of mail. These as yet unsolved attacks and the U.S. Postal Service's decision to irradiate certain types of mail has led to some unexpected complications. The high doses of radiation required to destroy biological agents like anthrax are sufficient to induce damage to other materials present in the envelope. There have been reports of damage to many different items that have been subjected to irradiation, including paper, precious gems, plastic, co
