Phylogenetic analysis of the envelope gene of St. Louis encephalitis virus.

The complete nucleotide sequences of the envelope gene of 62 geographic isolates of St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) virus were determined. Phylogenetic analyses of the sequences, conducted using both maximum parsimony and neighbor-joining methods, included four other members of the Japanese encephalitis serogroup. The results indicated that the SLE isolates formed a monophyletic group in which isolates generally clustered according to geographic origin. Isolates from Panama and South America predominantly formed two large groupings, while isolates from the U.S. formed two other major groups. Seve

[Seroprevalence of infection by St. Louis encephalitis virus in the Province of Formosa].

The aim of this work was to determine the prevalence of antibodies against St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLE) in human sera provided by the Laboratory of Epidemiological Surveillance from Formosa District (Province of Formosa, Argentina) in 1995 and 1997. The tests used for this study were hemagglutination inhibition (HI) and neutralization (NT). The screening performed by NT test showed prevalences of 21% (60/284) and 32% (50/157) of antibodies in samples obtained in 1995 and 1997 respectively. In 1995, 14% of tested sera showed low titer of neutralizing antibodies (NT) (1/20 and 1/40) wherea

Purification of the structural and nonstructural proteins of St. Louis encephalitis virus.

We have developed a procedure for purifying both the structural and nonstructural proteins of flaviviruses from lysates of infected cell cultures. The procedure involves: immunoprecipitation to concentrate viral proteins and eliminate most of the cellular proteins, preparative polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis to separate the viral proteins, and hydroxyapatite chromatography, which eliminates most of the unlabeled cellular protein. This procedure offers an improvement over previous purification schemes in that there is no loss of viral proteins after the immunoprecipitation step, any combinat

St. Louis Encephalitis Virus Disease in the United States, 2003-2017.

St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV), an arthropod-borne flavivirus, can cause disease presentations ranging from mild febrile illness through severe encephalitis. We reviewed U.S. national SLEV surveillance data for 2003 through 2017, including human disease cases and nonhuman infections. Over the 15-year period, 198 counties from 33 states and the District of Columbia reported SLEV activity; 94 (47%) of those counties reported SLEV activity only in nonhuman species. A total of 193 human cases of SLEV disease were reported, including 148 cases of neuroinvasive disease. A median of 10 cases wer

Experimental transmission of St. Louis encephalitis virus by Ochlerotatus j. japonicus.

Ochlerotatus japonicus japonicus a newly discovered nonindigenous mosquito species in North America, and a colonized strain of Culex pipiens were compared for their vector competence for St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLE). Infection rates in Oc. j. japonicus were 0-33% after feeding on chickens with viremias between 10(4.1) and 10(4.7) plaque-forming units (PFU)/ml of blood. In comparison, infection rates were 12-94% for Cx. pipiens that fed on the same chickens. When fed on chickens with viremias between 10(5.3) and 10(5.6) PFU/ml of blood, infection rates for Oc. j. japonicus and Cx. pipiens

Isolation of St. Louis encephalitis virus from overwintering Culex pipiens mosquitoes.

Two strains of St. Louis encephalitis virus were isolated from overwintering mosquitoes collected in Maryland and Pennsylvania during January and February 1977. There isolations from Culex pipiens constitute evidence that a mosquito-borne flavivirus can persist in a vector mosquito in temperate climates during the winter season.

Neuroinvasive St. Louis Encephalitis Virus Infection in Solid Organ Transplant Recipients.

In summer 2015, three unrelated solid organ transplant recipients in Phoenix, Arizona, had meningoencephalitis suggestive of West Nile virus (WNV) infection. Testing was inconclusive but was later confirmed as St. Louis encephalitis (SLE). We retrospectively reviewed clinical manifestations, treatment, and outcomes of these transplant recipients. Common symptoms were fever, rigors, diarrhea, headache, and confusion. One patient died 3 days after hospitalization. Therapy for the other two patients was initiated with interferon α-2b (IFN) and intravenous IgG (IVIG; IFN plus IVIG in combination).

St. Louis encephalitis virus possibly transmitted through blood transfusion-Arizona, 2015.

BACKGROUND: St. Louis encephalitis virus is a mosquito-borne flavivirus that infrequently causes epidemic central nervous system infections. In the United States, blood donors are not screened for St. Louis encephalitis virus infection, and transmission through blood transfusion has not been reported. During September 2015, St. Louis encephalitis virus infection was confirmed in an Arizona kidney transplant recipient. An investigation was initiated to determine the infection source. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: The patient was interviewed, and medical records were reviewed. To determine the like

Reliable detection of St. Louis encephalitis virus by RT-nested PCR.

INTRODUCTION: St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV) is a re-emerging arbovirus in South America, with reported cases in humans in Argentina and Brazil. This fact indicates that there is an urgent need to increase the current knowledge about this virus in order to control and prevent future cases. Exhaustive epidemiological and laboratory investigation is required to ensure fast, accurate identification of the viral agent and allow prompt surveillance action by health authorities. Herein, we report the development of a species-specific RT-nested PCR to detect SLEV. MATERIAL AND METHODS: After se
