Clinical and structural changes in reproductive organs and endocrine glands of sterile cows.

AIM: The study aimed to determine both macroscopic and microscopic changes in the reproductive organs of sterile cows. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Careful clinical and gynecological examinations (using histological and histochemical methods) of organs of culled sterile cows, such as ovaries, oviducts, the uterus, pars anterior adenohypophysis, thyroid body, and adrenals, were performed. RESULTS: It was found that 20% of the examined cows in the farms of the Republic of Bashkortostan had pathology of reproductive organs. Ovarian dysfunction was diagnosed in 31% of sterile cows. Histological and hi

Nuclear DNA analysis of hyperplastic parathyroid glands in multiple endocrine neoplasia type I.

Twenty-four hyperplastic parathyroid glands from 11 patients with multiple endocrine neoplasia type I (MEN-I), and 36 hyperplastic parathyroid glands in 15 patients with sporadic primary hyperparathyroidism, ie, not associated with MEN, were analyzed for DNA by flow cytometry. Sixteen of 24 hyperplastic parathyroid glands from patients with MEN-I were DNA diploid, and eight were DNA aneuploid. Thirty-three of 36 hyperplastic parathyroid glands from patients without MEN were DNA diploid, and only three were DNA aneuploid. The mean percentage of 4c level (a measure of the G2M phase of the cell c

Heterogeneous size of the parathyroid glands in familial multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1.

OBJECTIVE: We wished to determine whether there was size heterogeneity of the parathyroid glands in patients with familial multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (FMEN1) and primary hyperparathyroidism. DESIGN: At the National Institutes of Health we performed a retrospective analysis of parathyroid gland volume either from initial or repeat parathyroid exploration. PATIENTS: We studied subjects with FMEN1 and primary hyperparathyroidism. MEASUREMENTS: The parathyroid gland volume was estimated from recorded orthogonal diameters. Volume could also be estimated conservatively in many glands for

Naturally occurring lesions in some endocrine glands of laboratory maintained baboons (Papio sp.).

The pituitary gland was examined from 623 immature baboons (Papio cynocephalus and Papio anubis). Findings included microscopic cysts in the … nces. They were considered to be naturally occurring, a part of the "background" pathology of these endocrine glands in immature baboons.

Operative experience of U.S. general surgery residents with diseases of the adrenal glands, endocrine pancreas, and other less common endocrine organs.

The aim of this study was to determine if the experience of general surgery residents is adequate and effective. The Resident Statistic Summaries (Report C) of the Residence Review Committee (Surgery) for eight academic years from 1986 to 1994 were analyzed. The main outcome measurements were total number of residents and programs, average number of operations performed, maximum number of operations performed, standard deviation, and the most common number of operations performed. For adrenalectomy, the average per resident was 0.98. The maximum range was from 7 to 15. The standard deviations

Crossroads between Skin and Endocrine Glands: The Interplay of Lichen Planus with Thyroid Anomalies.

In this narrative review, we aimed to overview the interplay between lichen planus (LP) and thyroid conditions (TCs) from a dual perspective (dermatologic and endocrine), since a current gap in understanding LP-TC connections is found so far and the topic is still a matter of debate. We searched PubMed from Inception to October 2023 by using the key terms "lichen planus" and "thyroid", (alternatively, "endocrine" or "hormone"). We included original clinical studies in humans according to three sections: LP and TC in terms of dysfunction, autoimmunity, and neoplasia. Six studies confirmed an as

Immunohistochemical localization of vascular endothelial growth factor in the endocrine glands of the rat.

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a secreted polypeptide with specific effects on endothelial cell growth and vascular permeability. While previous studies have focused on the expression of VEGF associated with angiogenesis in tumor and embryonal tissues, little is known about the role of VEGF in normal adult tissues. In the present study, a specific antibody was used to study the immunohistochemical localization of VEGF in the entire body of normal adult rats. Intense to moderate immunoreactivities for VEGF were detected in some endocrine cell types, namely, the parafollicular cell

Does 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D participate in the regulation of hormone release from endocrine glands?

The presence of receptors for 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 in the pituitary, pancreas, testis, and ovary has raised the question of a possible direct role for 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25(OH)2D) in the regulation of hormone synthesis and secretion. To evaluate this problem, six children with the syndrome of resistance to 1,25(OH)2D with rickets and alopecia underwent dynamic tests of insulin, TSH, PRL, GH, and testosterone secretion. Oral glucose loading resulted in normal glucose curves, subnormal peak insulin responses of 12-20 microU/ml in three hypocalcemic patients, and normal peak serum ins

[Hormonal function of the thymus gland in melanoma of the skin: relation to functional disorders of other endocrine glands].

The analysis of correlations between levels of epiphyseal, hypophyseal, adrenocortical and gonadal hormones suggested functional disorders developing in these glands to be interdependent and account for dysfunction of the thymus and immune system in patients suffering malignant melanoma. The degree of relationship between pituitary-adrenal system and thymus function disorders increased with tumor size; it was more pronounced in males. The rationale for application of pineal gland preparations in melanoma patients aimed at combatting neuroendocrine disorders is discussed.

[Intrathyroidal location of parathyroid glands. Atypical presentation of multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 syndrome].

BACKGROUND: The most common manifestation of MEN 1 syndrome is primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) with parathyroid multiglandular affectation. The intrathyroidal situation represents 3-4% of all glands, and it is the second most frequent location in the cervical ectopias. CLINICAL CASE: 11 year old patient, with a family history of MEN1 syndrome and carrier of this same mutation. Patient presents HPTP with osteopenia. The cervical ultrasound shows three compatible images with pathological parathyroid glands (bilateral lower and upper left). The Scan and MRI are normal. Bone densitometry displ

Correlation of hepcidin level with insulin resistance and endocrine glands function in major thalassemia.

BACKGROUND: Hepcidin is a master regulator of iron metabolism that inhibits the transport of iron out of enterocytes and macrophages. Thalassemia major (TM) is associated with some of the endocrine disorders. However, studies have yet to be conducted on the correlation of hepcidin with hormone levels and insulin resistance (IR) in patients with TM. OBJECTIVES: In the present study, the correlation of hepcidin level with some endocrine and biochemical parameters was investigated to determine the factors that mainly affect hepcidin correlation in patients with thalassemia. These factors include

Morphological and functional changes in several endocrine glands induced by hypothyroidism in the rat.

The effect of hypothyroidism upon the morphology and the function of several endocrine glands was studied in radiothyroidectomized male rats. It was found that T3, T4, insulin, prolactin and corticosterone levels were significantly lower in hypothyroid rats. TSH levels were significantly higher in these animals while no changes were depicted in testosterone levels. The administration of T4 drew back to normal range the above-mentioned altered serum hormone levels. The studies performed with light microscopy revealed alterations only in the TSH secretory cells of the adenohypophysis. Conversely…
