Anal endosonography is a new technique that is useful in the preoperative assessment of patients with anal fistulas. Endosonographic images are created by the reflection of sound waves from the interfaces between tissues of varying densities. ES was performed preoperatively in 39 patients with a proximal bile duct carcinoma. The results were correlated with the histologic findings of resected specimens or intraoperative excision according to the new (1987) TNM classification. ES was accurate in assessing the depth of tumor infiltration. The overall accuracy of ES was 83.8%. Overstaging of T2 carcinoma occurred in three of ten patients (30%) and understaging of T3 carcinoma occurred in 3 of 27 patients (11%). The authors present ultrasonography-assisted endoscopic diagnosis of chemical burn of the esophagus. This method early predicted decompensated cicatricial stenosis of the esophagus that was valuable to determine treatment strategy. Preventive mini-invasive endoscopic percutaneous gastrostomy provided adequate enteral nutrition in a patient with decompensated esophageal stenosis before reconstructive surgery.

We report a rare case of perianal endometriosis, diagnosed in a 39-year-old woman who presented with a several-day history of a painful mass in the perineum. Perianal examination showed redness and swelling in the right anterior direction. A soft tumor was palpated, but there was no evidence of an episiotomy scar, or of fistula orifices. Endosonography-guided biliary drainage (ESBD) is a new method enabling internal drainage of an obstructed bile duct. The normal pancreas may have a hypoechoic ventral segment that does not correlate with the presence of pancreas divisum. Elderly individuals and heavy alcohol users may have abnormalities of their pancreas detected by EUS that are entirely asymptomatic. Nine patients were examined by anal endosonography for pelvic floor disorder. Internal anal sphincter thickness was correlated with sphincter function. Six patients with idiopathic incontinence showed a reduction of internal anal sphincter thickness, one patient with outlet obstruction due to chronic anal fissure showed an increase of thickness. Traumatic lesions could be precisely localized because of defects in both internal and external anal sphincter. Anal endosonography can be recommended in the evaluation of pelvic floor disorders.

Currently-used imaging methods often fail to depict carcinomas of the oral cavity and oropharynx properly. Scanning these tumours with recently developed digitally-guided transducers of 5 and 7.5 MHz, we found that diagnosis and assessment are significantly facilitated by flexible endosonography.
