Are Prepubertal Children Metabolically Comparable to Well-Trained Adult Endurance Athletes?

It is well acknowledged that prepubertal children have smaller body dimensions and a poorer mechanical (movement) efficiency, and thus a lower work capacity than adults. However, the scientific evidence indicates that prepubertal children have a greater net contribution of energy derived from aerobic metabolism in exercising muscle and reduced susceptibility to muscular fatigue, which makes them metabolically comparable to well-trained adult endurance athletes. For example, the relative energy contribution from oxidative and non-oxidative (i.e. anaerobic) sources during moderate-to-intense exe

Effects of oral sodium supplementation on indices of thermoregulation in trained, endurance athletes.

Guidelines recommend the consumption of sodium during exercise to replace losses in sweat; however, the effects of sodium on thermoregulation are less clear. To determine the effects of high-dose sodium supplementation on indices of thermoregulation and related outcomes, 11 endurance athletes participated in a double-blind, randomized-sequence, crossover study in which they underwent 2-hrs of endurance exercise at 60% heart rate reserve with 1800 mg of sodium supplementation (SS) during one trial and placebo (PL) during the other trial. A progressive intensity time-to-exhaustion test was perfo

Effects of endurance training and exercise on tissue antioxidative capacity and acetaminophen detoxification.

Both acute acetaminophen toxicity and physical exercise are accompanied by structural and functional damage to tissues. For acute acetaminophen toxicity, this damage occurs mainly in the liver. This damage, which is believed to be initially caused by oxidation and/or arylation, occurs only after depletion of liver glutathione (GSH). GSH normally protects against oxidation and/or arylation. Prolonged physical exercise also depletes GSH in the body. We hypothesized that with endurance training (repeated oxidant stress) tissues will develop mechanisms to prevent GSH depletion. Our results show th…

Optimizing Resistance Training for Sprint and Endurance Athletes: Balancing Positive and Negative Adaptations.

Resistance training (RT) triggers diverse morphological and physiological adaptations that are broadly considered beneficial for performance enhancement as well as injury risk reduction. Some athletes and coaches therefore engage in, or prescribe, substantial amounts of RT under the assumption that continued increments in maximal strength capacity and/or muscle mass will lead to improved sports performance. In contrast, others employ minimal or no RT under the assumption that RT may impair endurance or sprint performances. However, the morphological and physiological adaptations by which RT mi

Training Session Models in Endurance Sports: A Norwegian Perspective on Best Practice Recommendations.

BACKGROUND: Our scientific understanding of the mechanistic and practical connections between training session prescriptions, their execution by athletes, and adaptations over time in elite endurance sports remains limited. These connections are fundamental to the art and science of coaching. OBJECTIVE: By using successful Norwegian endurance coaches as key informants, the aim of this study is to describe and compare best practice session models across different exercise intensities in Olympic endurance sports. METHODS: Data collection was based on a four-step pragmatic qualitative study des

Exogenous ketosis elevates circulating erythropoietin and stimulates muscular angiogenesis during endurance training overload.

De novo capillarization is a primary muscular adaptation to endurance exercise training and is crucial to improving performance. Excess training load, however, impedes such beneficial adaptations, yet we recently demonstrated that such downregulation may be counteracted by ketone ester ingestion (KE) post-exercise. Therefore, we investigated whether KE could increase pro-angiogenic factors and thereby stimulate muscular angiogenesis during a 3-week endurance training-overload period involving 10 training sessions/week in healthy, male volunteers. Subjects received either 25 g of a ketone ester…

Activation of Three Major Signaling Pathways After Endurance Training and Spinal Cord Injury.

We aimed to investigate the effects of endurance training on expression of growth factors (GFs) and stimulation of neurotrophin-dependent signaling pathways (PI3k/Akt, PLCγ/PKC, PLCγ/CAMKII, Ras-Erk1/2 and Rac1-Cdc42) responsible for neuroplasticity, neuroregeneration, survival and growth after spinal cord injury (SCI). Wistar rats were divided into four groups: (i) intact controls; (ii) 6 weeks of endurance training; (iii) SCI; (iv) pre-training + SCI. The animals survived for 6 weeks after SCI. Firstly, endurance training markedly upregulated mRNA expression and protein levels (up to four ti…

High-volume endurance exercise training stimulates hematopoiesis by increasing ACE NH2-terminal activity.

One of the health benefits of endurance exercise training (ET) is the stimulation of hematopoiesis. However, the mechanisms underlying ET-induced hematopoietic adaptations are understudied. N-Acetyl-Seryl-Aspartyl-Lysyl-Proline (Ac-SDKP) inhibits proliferation of early hematopoietic progenitor cells. The angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) NH2-terminal promotes hematopoiesis by inhibiting the anti-hematopoietic effect of Ac-SDKP. Here we demonstrate for the first time the role of ACE NH2-terminal in ET-induced hematopoietic adaptations. Wistar rats were subjected to 10 weeks of moderate-(T1)

Physiological cardiac remodelling in response to endurance exercise training: cellular and molecular mechanisms.

Exercise training fosters the health and performance of the cardiovascular system, and represents nowadays a powerful tool for cardiovascular therapy. Exercise exerts its beneficial effects through reducing cardiovascular risk factors, and directly affecting the cellular and molecular remodelling of the heart. Traditionally, moderate endurance exercise training has been viewed to determine a balanced and revertible physiological growth, through cardiomyocyte hypertrophy accompanied by appropriate neoangiogenesis (the Athlete's Heart). These cellular adaptations are due to the activation of sig

The South African Defence Force physical training programme. Part I. Effect of 1 year's military training on endurance fitness.

The effect of the South African Defence Force's (SADF) military training on the endurance fitness of recruits was investigated. Pre-military training maximal O2 consumption (53,14 ml/kg/min) did not change significantly during the study. In contrast, lactate turnpoint (ml O2/kg/min) and treadmill performance time were moderately enhanced (7,5% and 8% respectively; P less than 0,05) by the initial 10-week basic training programme. Further analysis of the results showed this endurance-training effect to be limited to recruits of average and, in particular, below-average fitness. The salutary eff

One Year of Endurance Exercise Training Does not Improve Vascular Function in Non-Trained Limbs in Healthy Individuals.

Regular endurance exercise is widely recognized for its cardiovascular health benefits, with improvements in vascular function particularly … sly untrained but healthy individuals. These findings support the idea that vascular adaptations to endurance training may reflect a region-specific training effect with vascular remodeling confined to actively engaged limbs and, thus, undetectable in vascular territories not directly involved in exercise training.
