Chirality-Matched Piezoelectric Responsiveness and Energy Transfer in Supramolecular Co-Assembly of Dipeptides.

The concept of homochirality is fundamental to living systems, where biopolymers exhibit a uniform chiral signature. The absence of heterochiral or racemic biopolymers in nature highlights the importance of homochirality in precise molecular recognition, efficient packing, and controlled folding for maintaining cellular homeostasis and biological function. However, the role of homochirality in governing emergent functional properties in synthetic supramolecular nanomaterials has been less explored. Here, we investigate homochiral recognition of dipeptides at their co-assembled state. Homochira

Cascaded Energy Transfer in Supramolecular Assemblies Enables Amplified and Photoswitchable Circularly Polarized Luminescence.

Photoresponsive circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials are promising for optical information processing and anti-counterfeiting. However, integrating high luminescence dissymmetry factor (glum) with high-contrast reversible switching within a single system remains a significant challenge. In this study, we present a supramolecular CPL nanoplatform that combines hierarchical chirality amplification with light-gated cascaded Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET). Selective host-guest recognition between a TPE-functionalized chiral pillar[5]arene (TPEP5) and a polymeric guest forms …

Semiclassical analytic theory of multi-channel electronic energy transfer in nonadiabatic atomic collisions.

The semiclassical theory of nonadiabatic energy transfer [Adamovich and Rich, J. Chem. Phys. 160, 194101 (2024)] is extended to include multi-channel electronic excitation and quenching in three-dimensional atomic collisions. The transition probabilities, cross sections, and rate coefficients predicted by the theory are compared with high-fidelity quantum scattering predictions for N + N, using state-of-the-art ab initio interaction potentials and nonadiabatic couplings, and with a few available experiments. The theory predictions are in good agreement with quantum scattering, both for conditi…

Biarticular gastrocnemii muscles increase their joint energy transfer potential at high running speeds.

The involvement of energy transfer mechanisms between the ankle and the knee joint by the biarticular gastrocnemii muscles at high running speeds is currently unknown. During running at seven speeds (3.0-8.5 m s-1), the ankle and knee joint kinematics as well as the electromyographic activity of the gastrocnemius medialis and lateralis were captured. By means of the ankle-knee joint coupling angles, we determined the energy transfer potential between the two joints as the fraction of contact time where the joint angles are in-phase. At speeds above 6.0 m s-1, the ankle-to-knee joint energy tra…

Characterization of Ligand Binding in Human Serum Albumin from Atomistic Energy Transfer Simulations.

Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) is a key biophysical method for probing nanometer‑scale distances in biomolecular systems, but its direct application to protein-ligand complexes suffers from substantial biases due to restricted chromophore orientations and the limited validity of the point‑dipole approximation. This study introduces a protocol for identifying binding sites and characterizing ligand coordination modes in situ by combining fluorescence spectroscopy with efficient atomistic simulations based on the TrESP‑MMPol model. The protocol integrates electrostatic potential‑fitted…

Visible-light-mediated deoxygenative transformation of 1,2-dicarbonyl compounds through energy transfer process.

Through the energy transfer process, mild transformations can be achieved that are often difficult to realize under thermodynamic conditions. Herein, a visible-light-driven deoxygenative coupling of 1,2-dicarbonyl compounds for C-O, C-S, and C-N bonds construction is developed via triplet state 1,2-dicarbonyls, affording a wide range of α-functionalized ketones/esters under transition-metal and external photocatalyst free conditions. The usefulness of this method is demonstrated by gram-scale synthesis, late-stage functionalization of various carboxylic acid drugs, and the synthesis of natural…

Construction of a Cytosine-Adjusted Electrochemiluminescence Resonance Energy Transfer System for MicroRNA Detection.

The cytosines in cluster-nucleation sequences play a vital role in the formation of silver nanoclusters (Ag NCs). Here, an innovative electrochemiluminescence (ECL) resonance energy transfer (RET) sensing system was developed using CdS quantum dots (QDs) as ECL donor and Ag NCs as ECL acceptor. Modulation of the number of cytosines in the cluster-nucleation sequences allowed tuning of Ag NCs absorption bands to match with the ECL emission spectrum of CdS QDs, yielding effective ECL-RET. The sensitivity of detection was improved by dual-target recycling amplification based on duplex-specific nu…

Competitive Excimer Formation and Energy Transfer in Zr-Based Heterolinker Metal-Organic Frameworks.

The spectroscopy and dynamics of a series of Zr-based MOFs in dichloromethane suspension are reported. These Zr-NADC MOFs were constructed by using different mixtures of 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylate (NDC) and 4-amino-2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylate (NADC) as organic linkers. The fraction of NADC relative to NDC in these heterolinker MOFs ranges from 2 to 35 %. The results indicate two competitive photoprocesses: NDC excimer formation and an energy transfer (ET) from excited NDC linkers to NADC linkers. Increasing the fraction of NADC linkers in the Zr-NADC nanostructure decreases the mean time co…

Detection of Citrus tristeza virus by using fluorescence resonance energy transfer-based biosensor.

Due to the low titer or uneven distribution of Citrus tristeza virus (CTV) in field samples, detection of CTV by using conventional detection techniques may be difficult. Therefore, in the present work, the cadmium-telluride quantum dots (QDs) was conjugated with a specific antibody against coat protein (CP) of CTV, and the CP were immobilized on the surface of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) to develop a specific and sensitive fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET)-based nanobiosensor for detecting CTV. The maximum FRET efficiency for the developed nano-biosensor was observed at 60% in AuNP…

Energy transfer cassettes based on organic fluorophores: construction and applications in ratiometric sensing.

This tutorial review presents some recent developments in the construction and applications of cassettes based on resonance energy transfer between fluorescent dyes in the visible and infrared region. We focused on the contributions of different connections between the energy donor and acceptor according to the "through-space" and "through-bond" methods, and emphasised their applications in ratiometric sensing for the detection of ions and small molecules.

Oligo(p-phenylene ethynylene)-BODIPY derivatives: synthesis, energy transfer, and quantum-chemical calculations.

The synthesis and energy-transfer properties of a series of oligo(p-phenylene ethynylene)-BODIPY (OPEB) cassettes are reported. A series of oligo(p-phenylene ethynylene)s (OPEs) with different conjugated chain lengths as energy donor subunit in the energy-transfer system were capped at both ends with BODIPY chromophores as energy-acceptor subunits. The effect of the conjugated chain of OPEs on energy transfer in the OPEB cassettes was investigated by UV/Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy and modeling. With increasing number n of phenyl acetylene units (n=1-7), the absorption and emission maxima…

Theory of multichromophoric coherent resonance energy transfer: a polaronic quantum master equation approach.

The approach of second order time local quantum master equation in the polaron picture, which has been employed for a theory of coherent resonance energy transfer, is extended for general multichromophore systems. Explicit expressions for all the kernel and inhomogeneous terms are derived, which can be calculated by any standard numerical procedure. The theory is then applied to a model of donor-bridge-acceptor system moderately coupled to bosonic bath. The results are compared with those based on the theory of Förster's resonance energy transfer. It is shown that coherently coupled multichrom…

The inhibition of fluorescence resonance energy transfer between quantum dots for glucose assay.

Fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between two quantum dots of different sizes causes fluorescence quenching. Hereby a binding site pre-blocking approach is proposed to avoid this effect. Pre-binding of glucose on the donor occupies the binding sites and thus blocks resonance energy transfer between the two quantum dots, protecting the fluorescence from being quenched. A glucose assay is developed based on this approach. The glucose content is correlated with the fluorescence difference in the absence and in the presence of glucose. In practice, Green QDs-Con A conjugates are used a…

A hybrid quantum dot-antibody fragment fluorescence resonance energy transfer-based TNT sensor.

We demonstrate the use of luminescent QDs conjugated to antibody fragments to develop solution-phase nanoscale sensing assemblies, based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) for the specific detection of the explosive 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) in aqueous environments. The hybrid sensor consists of anti-TNT specific antibody fragments attached to a hydrophilic QD via metal-affinity coordination. A dye-labeled TNT analogue prebound in the antibody binding site quenches the QD photoluminescence via proximity-induced FRET. Analysis of the data collected at increasing dye-labeled anal…

Energy Transfer Catalysis Enabled by Multichannel Through-Space Charge Transfer TADF Photosensitizers: [2 + 2] Photocycloaddition to Cyclobutane-Fused Phosphindole 3-Oxides.

Triplet energy transfer (TEnT) photocatalysis has emerged as a powerful tool for enabling mild and selective bond-forming reactions. However, its generality remains limited by the intrinsic trade-offs in existing photosensitizers (PSs). Noble metal (e.g., Ir, Ru) complexes offer high efficiency yet suffer from cost and sustainability concerns, while organic carbonyl sensitizers suffer from weak visible-light absorption and short-lived triplet states. Herein, we report heavy-atom-free organic PSs featuring a multi-channel through-space charge transfer (TSCT) architecture within a thermally acti…
