On urban maladaptation in times of epidemics.

Epidemics are long-lasting and transboundary crises that challenge traditional approaches. Given the complexity and interconnectedness of modern cities, interventions can lead to unintended consequences or maladaptation. Although adaptation is central to resilience, crisis management often focuses on short-term response, leaving a gap in understanding urban adaptation and maladaptation. This study examines the impacts of uniform interventions across diverse urban districts to assess this (mal)adaptive process. We use the COVID-19 pandemic in The Hague, Netherlands, as a case study, employing a…

Modeling individual self-protective behavior during epidemics.

Protecting public health from infectious diseases requires collective action, as individual behaviors-such as vaccination and mask-wearing-directly influence disease dynamics. During the COVID-19 pandemic, unexpected public responses often undermined the effectiveness of interventions, highlighting the need to understand collective behavioral patterns and motivations to design more effective mitigation strategies. This study presents an agent-based simulation model that captures how individuals adjust self-protective behaviors based on evolving opinions about disease risk and examines how thes

Diabetes and Cardiovascular Complications: The Epidemics Continue.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The cardiovascular complications of type 1 and 2 diabetes are major causes of morbidity and mortality. Extensive efforts have been made to maximize glycemic control; this strategy reduces certain manifestations of cardiovascular complications. There are drawbacks, however, as intensive glycemic control does not impart perennial protective benefits, and these efforts are not without potential adverse sequelae, such as hypoglycemic events. RECENT FINDINGS: Here, the authors have focused on updates into key areas under study for mechanisms driving these cardiovascular disorder

The neurological sequelae of pandemics and epidemics.

Neurological manifestations in pandemics frequently cause short and long-term consequences which are frequently overlooked. Despite advances … equently forgotten. An improved understanding the possible mechanisms of neurological damage during epidemics, and increased recognition of the possible manifestations is fundamental to bring insights when dealing with future outbreaks. To reverse this gap in knowledge, we reviewed all the pandemics, large and important epidemics of human history in which n …

Modeling mitigation of influenza epidemics by baloxavir.

Influenza viruses annually kill 290,000-650,000 people worldwide. Antivirals can reduce death tolls. Baloxavir, the recently approved influenza antiviral, inhibits initiation of viral mRNA synthesis, whereas oseltamivir, an older drug, inhibits release of virus progeny. Baloxavir blocks virus replication more rapidly and completely than oseltamivir, reducing the duration of infectiousness. Hence, early baloxavir treatment may indirectly prevent transmission. Here, we estimate impacts of ramping up and accelerating baloxavir treatment on population-level incidence using a new model that links v

Reconstruction and prediction of viral disease epidemics.

A growing number of infectious pathogens are spreading among geographic regions. Some pathogens that were previously not considered to pose a general threat to human health have emerged at regional and global scales, such as Zika and Ebola Virus Disease. Other pathogens, such as yellow fever virus, were previously thought to be under control but have recently re-emerged, causing new challenges to public health organisations. A wide array of new modelling techniques, aided by increased computing capabilities, novel diagnostic tools, and the increased speed and availability of genomic sequencing

Meningitis epidemics shift in sub-Saharan belt.

Meningococcal meningitis (MCM) poses a serious threat to public health in Africa. Epidemics appear irregularly every 5-12 years, especially in the regions across sub-Saharan 'meningitis belt'. This study investigated the long-term spatiotemporal dynamics of MCM. It appears that dominant epidemic outbreaks in the meningitis belt spread from west to east over the study period 2006-2016.

Devastating epidemics in recent ages Greek populations.

In the recent Greek ages the most devastating epidemics were plague, smallpox, leprosy and cholera. In 1816 plague struck the Ionian and Aegean Islands, mainland Greece, Constantinople and Smyrna. The Venetians ruling the Ionian Islands effectively combated plague in contrast to the Ottomans ruling all other regions. In 1922, plague appeared in Patras refugees who were expelled by the Turks from Smyrna and Asia Minor. Inoculation against smallpox was first performed in Thessaly by the Greek women, and the Greek doctors Emmanouel Timonis (1713, Oxford) and Jakovos Pylarinos (1715, Venice) made …

[Fight against epidemics: Austrian prisoners in Troyes].

The victories near Ulm and Elchingen, where the Napoleonic army took 60000 prisoners between 15th and 20th of October 1805, lead to the arrival at Troyes (county "Aube") of nearly 2000 Austrian soldiers to be held inside former monasteries among whose, mainly the Jacobinians casern where more than half of them stayed. At the beginning of 1806, the government sent the epidemics medical practitioner Dr Desgenettes on an inspection tour to control the state of health of the populations of places where foreign prisoners were held, which lead him through several counties of the North-eastern part o…

Retinopathy of prematurity--epidemics, incidence, prevalence, blindness.

Currently, there are enough financial resources in industrial most developed countries to provide quality health care to the risk population of premature children. Neonatological units are equipped with state-of-the-art technological background, and highly qualified personnel are employed at the units. This as well allows providing optimum care of extremely immature newborns. ROP prevalence in these countries reaches approximately 5-8%. Today, a boom of surviving premature newborns can be seen in countries with medium-developed economy. Nevertheless, limited financing resources do not allow fo

BACKGROUND: HIV-1 subtype B virus is the predominant subtype in HIV-infected individuals in the United States. However, increasing evidence … icant non-B-infected population in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, DC, suggesting 2 independent epidemics of HIV in Maryland. Population-based surveillance inclusive of groups at higher risk of non-B strains is essential to monitor the prevalence and variations of HIV subtypes in Maryland and the United States.

Meningitis epidemics in Africa: a brief overview.

Every year, meningococcal meningitis causes thousands of deaths within the meningitis belt in sub-Saharan African countries. Large epidemic waves occur with a periodicity of 5-12 years. The waves do correspond to molecular changes in the expression of capsular or subcapsular antigens, which allow the bug to spread in susceptible populations. Serogroup A remains the major killer, even if in 2002, serogroup W135 ST-11 emerged in Burkina Faso, causing an important epidemic. However, the surveillance in the following years has showed a decrease in the W135 incidence and a clear predominance of ser

Primary aldosteronism--actual epidemics or false alarm?

The prevalence of "primary aldosteronism" (PAL) cannot be precisely determined at this time, given 1) lack of a universally accepted definition, and 2) normotensive as well as normokalemic phases in the evolutionary development of a disease eventually characterized by hypertension and hypokalemia. The exception is fully genetically characterised forms such as glucocorticoid-suppressible hyperaldosteronism, the true prevalence of which could be proven today by universal screening using a single blood sample, but this is neither practical nor appropriate. Controversy has arisen regarding the rar

When pestilence prevails...physician responsibilities in epidemics.

The threat of bioterrorism, the emergence of the SARS epidemic, and a recent focus on professionalism among physicians, present a timely opportunity for a review of, and renewed commitment to, physician obligations to care for patients during epidemics. The professional obligation to care for contagious patients is part of a larger "duty to treat," which historically became accepted when 1) a risk of nosocomial infection was perceived, 2) an organized professional body existed to promote the duty, and 3) the public came to rely on the duty. Physicians' responses to epidemics from the Hippocrat…
