Critical need for family-based, quasi-experimental designs in integrating genetic and social science research.

Researchers have identified environmental risks that predict subsequent psychological and medical problems. Based on these correlational findings, researchers have developed and tested complex developmental models and have examined biological moderating factors (e.g., gene-environment interactions). In this context, we stress the critical need for researchers to use family-based, quasi-experimental designs when trying to integrate genetic and social science research involving environmental variables because these designs rigorously examine causal inferences by testing competing hypotheses. We

How do recurrent malaria infections occur in clinical cohorts: a mathematical modelling study to support study planning.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent events of infectious diseases are common and the subject of analyses in many clinical studies. A proper understanding of disease occurrence over time within a cohort provides a basis for study planning and sample size estimation. This study mathematically describes the recurrence of malaria in a malaria-naïve cohort and highlights the necessary assumptions to inform study planning. METHODS: To represent different disease transmission scenarios, five mathematical models with different levels of complexity were constructed to mimic possible real-life scenarios. Model A rep

Zika virus infection in pregnant women in Honduras: study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Although there is increasing evidence for a relationship between symptomatic Zika virus (ZIKV) maternal infection, and microcephaly, a firm causal relation has yet to be established by epidemiologic studies. Studies also need to be conducted in recently infected settings. Our objectives are to assess the frequency of ZIKV infection during pregnancy in Honduras and the association of microcephaly with ZIKV infection. METHODS/DESIGN: We will perform a prospective study enrolling pregnant women at their first antenatal visit and following them up until delivery. At the time of enroll

Cross-border surveillance differences: tick-borne encephalitis and lyme borreliosis in the Czech Republic and Poland, 1999-2008.

We compared neighbouring regions of the Czech Republic (CZ) and Poland (PL) situated within 100 km of the country border, in order to compare surveillance systems performance in measuring the burden of tick-borne diseases in both countries. We used routine surveillance notifications from 1999-2008 on tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) and Lyme borreliosis (LB). We assessed the crude risk ratio (RR) across the country border, and its estimates adjusted for both population density and the expected epidemiological gradient across the region, using negative binomial regression. The crude RR between CZ

Immunotoxic effects of chemicals: A matrix for occupational and environmental epidemiological studies.

BACKGROUND: Many biological and chemical agents have the capacity to alter the way the immune system functions in human and animals. This study evaluates the immunotoxicity of 20 substances used widely in work environments. METHODS: A systematic literature search on the immunotoxicity of 20 chemicals was performed. The first step was to review literature on immunotoxicity testing and testing schemes adopted for establishing immunotoxicity in humans. The second step consisted of providing a documentation on immunotoxicity of substances that are widely used in work environment, by building tabl

Utilization of data from human population studies for setting air quality standards: evaluation of important issues.

Epidemiological studies of community populations are highly relevant to the process of setting national ambient air quality primary standards, as criteria for those standards are the protection of human populations against adverse effects on health. Nevertheless, because of the difficulties of performing adequate community population studies of a quality commensurate with the needs of standard setting, the use of data derived from studies is problematic. This paper addresses the important issues of appropriate exposure assessment and health assessment, and discusses the problems of multiplex v

Molecular epidemiology of dengue in Southeast Asia (SEA): Protocol of systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Dengue fever is a major global public health challenge caused by the Arbovirus and transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes. The increasing incidence of dengue, particularly in the Southeast Asia (SEA) region, including Malaysia, highlights the urgent need for a comprehensive understanding of dengue molecular epidemiology. This study aims to systematically review various aspects of dengue molecular epidemiology to gain insights into the disease's dynamics, transmission and circulation. Providing evidence-based insights is crucial for the prevention and control of dengue. METHODS AND ANAL

Why we need epidemiologic studies of polycystic ovary syndrome in Africa.

The primary objective of the Ghana Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Epidemiology and Phenotype (Ghana-PEP) study will be to assess the relevance and phenotypic distribution of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) in a medically unbiased population of reproductive-aged women. In addition, the study will also attempt to identify sociodemographic, environmental, and psychological factors that may play a role in the development of PCOS phenotype. The study aims to recruit 990 randomly selected women aged 18-45 years living in Nsawam, the district capital of the Nsawam-Adoagyiri Municipality, in the Eastern

Canadian Cohort Obstructive Lung Disease (CanCOLD): Fulfilling the need for longitudinal observational studies in COPD.

Awareness, diagnosis and treatment of COPD, compared to other major causes of death, remains far too low. This article describes the protocol objectives, design and the approaches taken in the Canadian Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (CanCOLD) study, an epidemiological and integrated research. The CanCOLD study aims at better understanding heterogeneity of COPD presentation and disease progression. We hypothesize that individuals with unfavourable COPD "phenotypes" and subjects at-risk (ever smokers) with unhealthy lifestyle habits, environmental/work exposure, or co-morbidities will have inc

One foot in, one foot out.

As radical health professionals, we have the triple identity of workers, of activists, and of intellectuals that creates the cauldron in which we live contradictory lives. We share the concerns of other workers for salaries, job security, health and safety at work, and work load. But like teachers and unlike most other workers we are not completely alienated from our work and have a stake in the outcomes of our labors that we are not always free to express or act on. As professionals, we share with our colleagues the intellectual curiosity about the origins of new infectious diseases, how raci

A landmark for popperian epidemiology: refutation of the randomised Aldactone evaluation study.

In 1999 a great multi-site clinical trial known as the randomised Aldactone evaluation study (RALES) showed that the use of spironolactone importantly reduced complications attributable to chronic heart failure without major negative side effects. Recently, RALES has been questioned by a large scale observational study in the Ontario population. In contrast with predictions, the complications and mortality increased dramatically because of hyperkalaemia, reaching dimensions that from a public health perspective are comparable to an epidemic. This review analyses both researches in the light of

Techniques for detecting and determining risks from low-level radiation.

Epidemiology is the study of disease in man. In evaluating radiation hazards, analytic studies have utilized the cohort type of investigation (where persons exposed and not exposed to radiation are followed forward in time for determination of disease experience) or case-control approaches (where persons with and without a specific disease are evaluated for previous exposure to radiation). Most radiation studies have evaluated cohorts (e.g., radiologists), although important case-control studies have been conducted (e.g., childhood leukemia as related to prenatal x ray). At its best, epidemiol

Climbing down the steps from the ivory tower: how UK academics and criminal justice practitioners need to work together on alcohol studies.

Purpose Evidence in the UK tells us that risky drinking is high amongst those in contact with the criminal justice system. The purpose of this paper is to explore the reasons why carrying out research around risky drinking in this setting is so difficult. Design/methodology/approach A commentary on the issues of carrying out research in the criminal justice setting. Findings There are issues of carrying out research in the criminal justice setting. The authors argue, that as academics we can be more proactive in working with practitioners in the design and carrying out of studies. By examining

[Sex/Gender-sensitive Research - A Survey of Epidemiologists in Germany].

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Epidemiology is the basic science of Public Health and has to provide high-quality scientific evidence for disease prevention and health care. Sex/Gender, as social and biological structure categories of population, play a central role in the analysis of epidemiological data. Whether and how epidemiologists incorporate sex/gender aspects in their research, their attitudes, needs and requirements they have in this context have hardly been investigated. These questions were addressed in a survey of epidemiologists in Germany. METHODS: With the support of the respective scie

Optimising the case-crossover design for use in shared exposure settings.

With a case-crossover design, a case's exposure during a risk period is compared to the case's exposures at referent periods. The selection of referents for this self-controlled design is determined by the referent selection strategy (RSS). Previous research mainly focused on systematic bias associated with the RSS. We additionally focused on how RSS determines the number of referents per risk, sensitivity to overdispersion and time-varying confounding. We illustrated the consequences of different RSS using a simulation study informed by data on meteorological variables and Legionnaires' diseas

Adaptation of multiple logistic regression to a multiple inverse sampling design: application to the Isfahan healthy heart program.

In observational and experimental studies in the health sciences involving human populations, it is sometimes considered desirable to recruit subjects according to designs that specify a predetermined number of subjects in each of several mutually exclusive classes (generally but not necessarily demographic in nature). This type of adaptive sampling design, now generally referred to as multiple inverse sampling (MIS), has received recent attention, and estimation methods are now available for several sequential MIS sampling designs. In this class of designs, subjects are sampled randomly and s
