We report a case of a subsynovial epidermal inclusion cyst in a 47-year-old woman with a painful spontaneous swelling of the right knee and a 2-year history of puncture and arthroscopy. Epidermal inclusion cysts are one of the most common benign subcutaneous tumours. Very rarely, they are located in an articulation and can cause an inflammatory reaction when rupture occurs. Simple surgical excision is the preferred therapy. The main goal of this case report is to include the possibility of an intra-articular epidermal inclusion cyst into the differential when imaging shows an intra-articular s

Epidermal cysts are common skin tumors that are composed of a cyst wall of epidermal cells and central keratin material. They rarely show ossification. A 68-year-old man was referred to our clinic for evaluation of multiple cysts on his left forehead, left cheek and right shoulder. Histopathological examination revealed that all of the cysts were epidermal cysts, and focal ossification was observed outside the cyst on the forehead. We speculated that chronic inflammation caused ossification around the cyst. Therefore, epidermal cyst should be included in the differential diagnosis of cysts wit…

Epidermal cyst is the most commonly observed cutaneous tumor. It usually involves the scalp, neck, face, back, and trunk. A commonly seen epidermal cyst is usually a slow-growing tumor of a diameter of 1-2 cm. Cysts with a diameter of more than 5 cm have rarely been reported in the literature. Herein we report a case of a giant epidermal cyst localized in the scalp of the occipital area, diagnostic problems and therapeutic proceedings.

Epidermal cysts of periorbit and intraorbit are common problems to ophthalmologists, but giant periorbital epidermal cyst is exceedingly rare. Only a few cases have been reported previously. A 62-year-old woman presented with a large right periorbital area mass that resulted in right upper lid complete ptosis and severe gaze limitation in all directions. Visual acuity of right eye was finger count (20/2000). Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a bone-destroying mass involving the lateral side of the right superior orbital limb. Complete surgical removal was performed th…

Although there are numerous aetiologies for coccygodynia described in the medical literature, precoccygeal epidermal inclusion cyst presenting as a coccygodynia has not been reported. We report a 30-year-old woman with intractable coccygodynia. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a circumscribed precoccygeal cystic lesion. The removed cyst was pearly-white in appearance and contained cheesy material. Histological evaluation established the diagnosis of epidermal inclusion cyst with mild nonspecific inflammation. The patient became asymptomatic and remained so at two years follow-up. This report

Epidermal cysts are the benign tumors which are found in various regions. We experienced a rare case in which the preauricular sinus was the origin of the epidermal cyst.

Malignant degeneration within epidermal cysts is very rare. However, these lesions may not be recognised clinically, and histological examination plays an important role in arriving at a correct diagnosis. Hence, we believe that benign-looking cystic lesions with a history of progressive growth should be surgically excised and submitted for histopathological assessment.

In a 40-year old man undergoing, under local anaesthesia, excision of an epidermal cyst located in the frontal region, at the border of the scalp, the operator had difficulties in removing the deep part of the cyst and perceived an underlying bone depression. The depression was caused by a 2 x 1.3 cm wide lacuna in the calvarium, which was subsequently treated by neurosurgeons. Histology showed only fragments of a simple epidermal cyst wall and no evidence of dermoid cyst. The causes of osteolysis associated with congenital or acquired skin lesions are reviewed. In this case, the old age and v…

The findings of a clinicopathological and biochemical study of epidermal cysts and a review of the relevant literature are presented. A punctum was found in 40% of 34 epidermal cysts that were studied in detail. The findings of the histological study were in favour of the punctum being the orifice of an obstructed hair follicle from which at least a proportion of the epidermal cysts are likely to develop. The biochemical analysis of the contents of the cysts revealed a very low protein and lipid content, thus ruling out any "sebaceous' contribution. Bacteriological study of clinically inflamed…
