Metabolic adaptations are a functional requirement for the heart to accommodate its broad range of physiologic operating conditions. It is increasingly recognized that persistent and exaggerated metabolic alterations precede adverse cardiac remodeling leading to heart failure. These metabolic shifts are coupled with changes in cardiac gene expression, driven in part by chromatin-modifying enzymes, which have recently been identified as both sensors and transducers of metabolic stress and gene regulatory networks, respectively. This review synthesizes the latest evidence implicating chromatin-m

BACKGROUND: Migraine represents the third leading cause of disability-adjusted life years among young females worldwide, responsible for physical and emotional distress along with reduced social functioning. The matter is further complicated by resistance and even refractoriness to the available treatments. Indeed, despite the several therapeutic strategies, remarkably improved by the development of the novel, specific drugs directed towards calcitonin-gene related peptide (CGRP) signalling, 40% patients, also undergoing anti-CGRP therapy, are still difficult-to-treat. The potential role of en

Polyphenols, abundant in tea, fruits, vegetables, and other plant-derived foods, have emerged as key bioactive ingredients in the field of nutritional epigenetics. These polyphenols can modulate epigenetic modifications through endogenous metabolic pathways that are highly sensitive to food signals. Among these, the methionine cycle plays a central role in maintaining the homeostasis of DNA, histone, and RNA methylation by controlling the cellular supply of S-adenosylmethionine (SAM), the universal methyl donor. Dietary polyphenols influence this cycle through multiple mechanisms, including th

BACKGROUND: Cellular senescence is a biological process in which the cell cycle is arrested in response to DNA damage caused by different endogenous and exogenous stimuli. In senescent cells, activation of intracellular cascade induces epigenetic, morphological and metabolic changes. Among them, senescent status is characterized by an alteration of the epigenome and the establishment of a peculiar senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP), which contributes to the extracellular matrix remodeling and senescence spreading. Growing interest is directed towards senescence relevance both in

Sjögren's syndrome (SS) is an autoimmune disease that can be classified as an epithelitis based on the immune-mediated attack directed specifically at epithelial cells. SS predominantly affects women, is characterized by the production of highly specific circulating autoantibodies, and the major targets are the salivary and lachrymal glands. Although a genetic predisposition has been amply demonstrated for SS, the etiology remains unclear. The recent integration of epigenetic data relating to autoimmune diseases opens new therapeutic perspectives based on a better understanding of the molecula

Maintaining good health is crucial, and exercise plays a vital role in achieving this goal. It offers a range of positive benefits for cognitive function, regardless of age. However, as our population ages and life expectancy increases, cognitive impairment has become a prevalent issue, often coexisting with age-related neurodegenerative conditions. This can result in devastating consequences such as memory loss, difficulty speaking, and confusion, greatly hindering one's ability to lead an ordinary life. In addition, the decrease in mental capacity has a significant effect on an individual's

Cancers during oncogenic progression hold information in epigenetic memory which allows flexible encoding of malignant phenotypes and more rapid reaction to the environment when compared to purely mutation-based clonal evolution mechanisms. Cancer memory describes a proposed mechanism by which complex information such as metastasis phenotypes, therapy resistance and interaction patterns with the tumor environment might be encoded at multiple levels via mechanisms used in memory formation in the brain and immune system (e.g. single-cell epigenetic changes and distributed state modifications in

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease, mainly characterized by perifibrocartilage osteitis of the sacroiliac joints and spinal enthesitis. To date, the exact pathogenesis of AS remains elusive. It is generally believed that AS is a multifactorial disease involving genetics, infection, environment, and immunity. Among them, genetic factors are the primary determinants of disease risk and severity. In recent years, epigenetic mechanisms such as DNA methylation have been extensively surveyed with respect to the pathogenesis of AS. This review summarizes the late

Psoriasis is a common, chronic, and inflammatory skin disease with a high burden on individuals, health systems, and society worldwide. With the immunological pathologies and pathogenesis of psoriasis becoming gradually revealed, the therapeutic approaches for this disease have gained revolutionary progress. Nevertheless, the mechanisms of less common forms of psoriasis remain elusive. Furthermore, severe adverse effects and the recurrence of disease upon treatment cessation should be noted and addressed during the treatment, which, however, has been rarely explored with the integration of pre

Parental exposure to drugs of abuse induces changes in the germline that can be transmitted across subsequent generations, resulting in enduring effects on gene expression and behavior. This transgenerational inheritance involves a dynamic interplay of environmental, genetic, and epigenetic factors that impact an individual's vulnerability to neuropsychiatric disorders. This chapter aims to summarize recent research into the mechanisms underlying the inheritance of gene expression and phenotypic patterns associated with exposure to drugs of abuse, with an emphasis on cocaine. We will first def

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative disease that leads to joint pain and stiffness and is one of the leading causes of disability and pain worldwide. Autophagy is a highly conserved self-degradation process, and its abnormal function is closely related to human diseases, including OA. Abnormal autophagy regulates cell aging, matrix metalloproteinase metabolism, and reactive oxygen metabolism, which are key in the occurrence and development of OA. There is evidence that drugs directly or indirectly targeting autophagy significantly hinder the progress of OA. In addition, the occurrence and de

Fluoride, one of the global groundwater contaminants, is ubiquitous in our day-to-day life from various natural and anthropogenic sources. Numerous in vitro, in vivo, and epidemiological studies are conducted to understand the effect of fluoride on biological systems. A low concentration of fluoride is reported to increase oral health, whereas chronic exposure to higher concentrations causes fluoride toxicity (fluorosis). It includes dental fluorosis, skeletal fluorosis, and fluoride toxicity in soft tissues. The mechanism of fluoride toxicity has been reviewed extensively. However, epigenetic

The observed incidence of psoriasis has been gradually increasing over time (J Am Acad Dermatol, 03, 2009, 394), but the underlying pathogenic factors have remained unclear. Recent studies suggest the importance of epigenetic modification in the pathogenesis of psoriasis. Aberrant epigenetic patterns including changes in DNA methylation, histone modifications and non-coding RNA expression are observed in psoriatic skin. Reversing these epigenetic mechanisms has showed improvement in psoriatic phenotypes, making epigenetic therapy a potential avenue for psoriasis treatment. Here, we summarize r

This study aimed to explore whether supplementation of the culture medium with selenium nanoparticles (nSe) can influence growth, biochemistry, expression of transcription factors, and epigenetic DNA methylation in Capsicum annuum. The seeds were grown in hormone-free MS culture medium supplemented with nSe (0, 0.5, 1, 10, and 30 mgL-1) or corresponding doses of bulk type selenate (BSe). Incorporation of nSe into the medium caused variations in morphology and growth in a manner dependent on the dose and Se type. The low doses of nSe displayed growth-promoting effects, whereas nSe at 10 and 30

BACKGROUND: Obesity is increasingly recognized as a significant factor in the susceptibility of older adults to falls and related injuries. While existing literature has established a connection between obesity and reduced postural stability during stationary stances, the direct implications of obesity on walking dynamics, particularly among the older adults with sarcopenia, are not yet comprehensively understood.
OBJECTIVE: Firstly, to investigate the influence of obesity on steady-state and proactive balance, as well as gait characteristics, among older adults with sarcopenic obesity (SO);

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Psoriasis isa quite common, chronic and immune-mediated skin disorder. The prevalence of psoriasis differs in various countries, but it is said to affect 2% of the world's population in general. Psoriasis has many different clinical features but all lesions have the same characteristic: erythema, thickening and scale, although other clinical features are also connected, such as psoriatic arthritis, obesity and metabolic syndrome. All of these may lead to conditions impairing the quality of life. This review is an attempt to summarize recent data regarding environmen

Follicular lymphoma (FL) is an indolent malignancy of germinal center B cells. Although the overall survival of FL patients has recently improved with the introduction of novel therapies, there is significant heterogeneity in patient outcome and a need for rationally designed therapeutic strategies that target disease biology. Next-generation sequencing studies have identified chromatin modifying gene (CMG) mutations as a hallmark of FL, highlighting epigenetic modifiers as an attractive therapeutic target in this disease. Understanding the complex roles of these mutations will be central to i

Autism is a developmental disorder that starts before age 3 years, and children with autism have impairment in both social interaction and communication, and have restricted, repetitive, and stereotyped patterns of behavior, interests, and activities. There is a strong heritable component of autism and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) as studies have shown that parents who have a child with ASD have a 2-18% chance of having a second child with ASD. The prevalence of autism and ASD have been increasing during the last 3 decades and much research has been carried out to understand the etiology, so

For long time, the epidemiology of late-onset sporadic Alzheimer's disease (AD) risk factors has centered on adult life-style. Recent studies have, instead, focused on the role of early life experiences in progression of such disease especially in the context of prenatal and postnatal life. Although no single unfavorable environmental event has been shown to be neither necessary nor sufficient for AD development, it is possible that the sum of several environmentally induced effects, over time, contribute to its pathophysiology through epigenetic mechanisms. Indeed, epigenetic changes are infl
