BACKGROUND: Foreign body ingestion is a common emergence in gastroenterology. Foreign bodies are most likely to be embedded in the esophagus. The sharp ones may penetrate the esophageal wall and lead to serious complications.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 72-year-old Chinese female was admitted to our hospital with a 4-day history of retrosternal pain and a growing cough after eating fish. Chest computed tomography scan indicated that a high-density foreign body (a fish bone) penetrated through the esophageal wall and inserted into the left main bronchus. First, we used a rigid esophagoscope to explor

OBJECTIVE: To improve the understanding of the diagnosis and treatment of neurolemmoma in the head and neck by exploring its clinical features.
METHOD: Among all cases treated surgically, 15 cases of neurolemmoma in the neck were by the approach of lateral pharyngotomy, one case of neurolemmoma in the nasal cavity by lateral rhinotomy, three cases by mouth. Two cases of facial neurolemmoma were resected by the combined approach (mastoid process, middle cranial fossa and posterior cranial fossa) and radical mastoidectomy respectively. One case of neurolemmoma in the pyriform sinus was complete

The present report shows the experience of the authors in the treatment of esophageal variceal veins with a new technique: Endoscopic band ligation of esophageal varices. This new procedure developed recently in the western world has been introduced in Perú, thanks to one of the authors who brought the Stiegmann Goff elastic band ligation device. The results of its use in cirrhotic patients with acute variceal hemorrhage and with large esophageal varices has been very effective, getting hemostasis and obliteration of esophageal varices. Very few complications were observed.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Foreign body ingestions often occur in children between the ages of six months and three years. Swallowing button battery can cause serious complications such as gastrointestinal mucosa tissue necrosis and esophageal perforation. Fatal secondary lesions after foreign body removal are rarely reported.
CASE PRESENTATION: We reported a case of 18 months old boy who accidently swallowed a button battery (20 mm diameter, 3.2 mm height) which lodged in the esophagus for 3 days before removed by esophagoscope. Secondary esophageal perforation and rupture of ascending aor

The era of bronchoscopy began with Gustav Killian in 1876 when he removed a pork bone from a farmer's airway, using an esophagoscope. Prompted by this accomplishment, Chevalier Jackson, an American otolaryngologist, laid the platform for the modern-day rigid bronchoscope in the early twentieth century. In 1967 Shigeto Ikeda revolutionized the field of bronchoscopy by his innovation of the fiberoptic bronchoscope. Today, bronchoscopy and interventional pulmonology have become an integral part of pulmonary medicine and an established subspecialty. Numerous innovators have furthered the horizons

UNLABELLED: Vascular rings (VR) may produce extrinsic compression of trachea and/or esophagus. Diagnosis relies on nonspecific clinical data from resulting compression and image studies, mainly angiography, computed tomography, and cardiovascular MRI. Because of their low incidence, diagnosis is often missed. The role of bronchoscopy and esophagoscopy is controversial, but these procedures might establish for the first time the diagnostic suspicion of VR. This communication was aimed to determine to what extent endoscopic manifestations lead the clinician to suspect the presence of a VR and, m

OBJECTIVE: At our institution, percutaneous gastrostomy tubes have been inserted under fluoroscopic guidance (fluoroscopic cutaneous gastrostomy [FPG]), thereby avoiding the need to traverse the pharynx and esophagus with a large-bore esophagoscope. For this reason, placement in the postoperative patient does not jeopardize the surgical reconstruction.
METHODS: Thirty-five patients underwent percutaneous gastrostomy placement under fluoroscopic guidance. These included 12 patients whose cervical esophagus could not be entered safely because of a lesion in the head neck, 11 patients who had re

Management of 242 foreign bodies of the upper gastrointestinal tract are reported. Thirty-nine were in the pharynx, 181 in the esophagus, 19 in the stomach, and 3 in the small bowel. The flexible panendoscope was used 211 times (87.2%) to manage these foreign bodies, while the rigid esophagoscope was used 12 times (5.0%). Two hundred thirty-nine foreign bodies (98.8%) were successfully managed endoscopically. The surgery rate was 0.4%. There was no morbidity or mortality. Twenty-five percent of the cases were done under general endotracheal anesthesia. Coins in the esophagus are removed prompt

OBJECTIVE: Benign esophageal strictures are regularly encountered problems in clinical practice. The management of refractory benign esophageal stricture, which fails to establish adequate food passage despite multiple dilatation sessions, has been considered challenging. Experimental animal models are essential for the development of effective treatment methods. The aim of this study was to establish a new animal model of benign esophageal stricture using rabbits.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Corrosive injury of the esophagus was induced by administration of 1 ml of 1.5% sodium hydroxide in eight r

INTRODUCTION: We describe our experience of the diagnosis and removal of foreign bodies from the pharynx and oesophagus using transnasal flexible laryngo-oesophagoscopy (TNFLO) under local analgesic. The advantages of this novel instrumentation and technique are discussed.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients were examined with a Pentax 80K Series Digital Video Endoscope after local analgesia. The instrument was passed transnasally examining the oro- and hypopharynx, and then passed into the oesophagus. The presence, type and site of a foreign body could then be established. If a foreign body was d

Oesophageal endoscopy in cattle has been rarely reported in the literature. It has, however, been used for many years as an aid to the diagnosis and treatment of illnesses of the upper gastrointestinal tract in small animals and horses. We have assessed the potential value of oesophagoscopy on 120 bovine patients presented at the 2nd Medical Clinic for Ruminants and Swine at the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna, over a period of three years. In the course of the study, cattle exhibiting symptoms such as salivation, regurgitation or swelling in the neck region were referred for endosco

Foreign bodies in the upper esophagus should be removed as soon as possible to avoid serious complications. However, removals of foreign bodies in the upper esophagus are very difficult, especially if they have sharp edges, such as press-through-packs (PTPs). We experienced four cases of the impacted PTPs in the upper esophagus which was successfully extracted endoscopically with the overtube. Because two edges of PTPs were so firmly impacted in the esophageal wall in all cases, the PTPs were not movable in the upper esophagus. However, after insertion of the overtube, PTPs became movable and

We conducted a retrospective study to evaluate the use of flexible esophagoscopy as part of routine panendoscopy in an academic setting. We reviewed the results of 378 procedures that were performed over a 4-year period in an academic otolaryngology--head and neck surgery program for residents and fellows. Medical records were reviewed for early and late complications as well as for adequacy of the examination. We found no immediate or long-term complications associated with flexible esophagoscopy. Adequate examination was achieved in all but two cases (99%), both of which involved patients wh

The endoscopic diagnoses of 51 patients with carcinoma of the oesophagus and cardia were studied. Tissue for histology and cytology was obtained through either the flexible (28) or rigid (23) endoscope and the results compared. Squamous cell carcinoma was diagnosed accurately (100%) by either method. Adenocarcinoma was poorly diagnosed by flexible endoscopy (five out of 13 with one false positive) while rigid endoscopy remained accurate (six out of six). Misdiagnosis with the flexible endoscope has been shown to occur in the presence of inflammation of the mucosa or tumour infiltration of the
