Evaluation of MODS assay for rapid detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis resistance to second-line drugs in a tertiary care tuberculosis hospital in China.

In this study we evaluated the performance of microscopic observation drug susceptibility (MODS) assay for rapid detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis resistance to second-line drugs. 246 multidrug-resistant M. tuberculosis clinical isolates were used to compare MODS with the agar proportion method for rapid detection of resistance to 8 second-line drugs: ofloxacin, amikacin, kanamycin, capreomycin, ethionamide, cycloserine, ciprofloxacin and para-aminosalicylic acid. Evaluation of nitrate reductase assay for rapid detection of resistance to second-line drugs in Mycobacterium tuberculosis in a tertiary care hospital.

The present study evaluated nitrate reductase assay (NRA) for rapid detection of resistance to 5 second-line drugs: kanamycin, ethionamide, ofloxacin, cycloserine, and para-aminosalicylic acid. Eighty-six multidrug-resistant clinical isolates of Mycobacterium tuberculosis were used to compare NRA with proportion method for rapid detection of resistance to second-line drugs. Few data are available on tuberculosis (TB) drug resistance patterns in Papua New Guinea (PNG) due to the lack of facilities for mycobacterial culture. Many patients from the Western Province seek care in Queensland health clinics in the Torres Strait. Since 2000, we have treated 161 TB cases from PNG, of whom 40 proved to have multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB; two human immunodeficiency virus positive).
