Neurilemmoma of fronto-ethmoid paranasal sinuses: aggressive anterior skull base destructing tumor-a case report.

Neurilemmomas (Schwannomas) of sinonasal tract are very unusual. They are benign, slow-growing, usually solitary encapsulated perineural tumors. They arise from Schwann cells of the neural sheath of the peripheral nervous system including motor, sensory and autonomic nerves. They can occur throughout the body, but the head and neck region demonstrate a higher incidence of occurrence (25-45%). The sinonasal region, however, has the lowest incidence rate with only 3-4%. We report here a rare case of fronto-ethmoid sinus neurilemmoma that is locally destructing the anterior skull base and the lat

Correlations between anatomical variations of the nasal cavity and ethmoidal sinuses on cone-beam computed tomography scans.

PURPOSE: Anatomical variations of the external nasal wall are highly important, since they play a role in obstruction or drainage of the ostiomeatal complex and ventilation and can consequently elevate the risk of pathological sinus conditions. This study aimed to assess anatomical variations of the nasal cavity and ethmoidal sinuses and their correlations on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study evaluated CBCT scans of 250 patients, including 107 males and 143 females, to determine the prevalence of anatomical variations of the nasal ca

[Peculiarities of the application of a multi-angle endoscopy during surgical interventions on the ethmoidal and sphenoidal sinuses: the anatomical study].

This work was designed to carry out the postmortem evaluation of the potential of using a multi-angle endoscope for endonasal surgical interventions on the ethmoidal and sphenoidal sinuses. The study was performed on 5 fresh cadavers (10 sides). It was shown that the range of the angles and directions of view during dissection of ethmoidal sinuses is 10-50 degrees and 360 degrees respectively. The use of an Acclarent Cyclops endoscope made it possible to visualize all walls of the sphenoidal sinus through the enlarged aperture which confirms the higher effectiveness of this instrument compared

Chondromyxoid fibroma of the nasal bone with extension into the frontal and ethmoidal sinuses: report of one case and a review of the literature.

Chondromyxoid fibroma is a rare benign tumor that usually occurs in the long bones. A 50-year-old patient presented with chondromyxoid fibroma of the nasal bone with extension into the frontal and ethmoidal sinuses. This is the fourth case reported to date in the literature. The clinical manifestations of the tumor were very limited, and the appearance at rhinoscopy was misleading. Radiologic imaging showed a soft tissue lesion invading the adjacent bony structures and the dura mater. Surgery was performed by a combined team of otorhinolaryngologists and neurosurgeons, and total excision of th

Radiographic identification and description of the equine middle conchal sinus (ethmoidal sinus): Implications for diagnosing middle conchal sinusitis.

BACKGROUND: The middle conchal sinus (MCS) (ethmoidal sinus) remains one of the least understood equine paranasal compartments. Despite recognition of its involvement in sinonasal disease, disorders of the MCS often remain underdiagnosed in the absence of computed tomographic (CT) imaging due to limited anatomical understanding and challenges with radiographic visualisation. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of the study were (1) to characterise the radiographic features and anatomical location of the MCS in horses and (2) to illustrate the practical relevance of the anatomical and radiographic find

Antibiotic sensitivities of Streptococcus pneumoniae, viridans streptococci, and group A hemolytic streptococci isolated from the maxillary and ethmoid sinuses.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate antibiotic sensitivities of Streptococcus pneumoniae, viridans streptococci, and group A hemolytic streptococci isolated from the culture materials obtained from the sinuses of patients undergoing functional endoscopic sinus surgery due to chronic sinusitis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We recruited 93 patients (63 males, 30 females; mean age 36+/-17.5; range 19 to 68 years) who underwent functional endoscopic sinus surgery due to chronic sinusitis. Before surgical intervention, in order to eliminate a possible contamination from the skin and neighboring structures, nasal

Pneumosinus Dilatans of the Frontal and Ethmoidal Sinuses Revealed by Conscience Disorder and Respiratory Distress: Case Report and Literature Review.

An abnormal enlargement of the air-filled paranasal sinuses is referred to as pneumosinus dilatans. Typically discovered incidentally through radiological examinations, it infrequently manifests as cosmetic, neurological, ocular, or rhinological pathologies. Thorough evaluation for associated conditions is essential in patients with pneumosinus dilatans, including meningiomas of the anterior skull base or the optic nerve sheath. In our work, we report a 75-year-old female patient who presented with dysarthria and lower facial asymmetry. The computed tomography (CT) scan revealed pneumosinus di

Adenocarcinoma of the ethmoid sinuses. Results of a new protocol based on inductive chemotherapy combined with surgery. Four years experience.

New therapeutic modalities for Ethmoidal Adenocarcinomas are presented. Thirty three patients harbouring such a tumour have been treated during the last four years. Twenty three were included in the following protocol:--the first step consisted in inductive chemotherapy based on a four-day course of continuous cisplatine (CDDP) and 5-fluoro-uracyl (5-FU infusion)--the second step was the tumour removal, which was performed through a combined transfacial and subfrontal approach. A contralateral ethmoidectomy was always performed. The integrity of the sphenoidal sinus was systematically checked.

Relationship between pediatric sinusitis and middle turbinate pneumatization--ethmoidal sinus pyocele thought to be caused by middle turbinate pneumatization.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether the presence of pediatric middle turbinate pneumatization causes narrowing of the ostiomeatal complex (OMC) and is associated with the development of paranasal sinusitis. METHODS: CT scans of 190 nasal sides of 95 children (1-15 years old) were analyzed for the presence of middle turbinate pneumatization and mucosal thickness in the paranasal sinus. RESULTS: Middle turbinate pneumatization was detected in nine (4.6%) of the nasal cavities. Only one of these sides was in a patient younger than 10 years of age, while the other eight sides were in patients at l

Ethmoidal sinusitis caused by Exserohilum rostratum in a patient with malignant lymphoma after non-myeloablative allogeneic peripheral blood stem cell transplantation.

We describe a patient with aggressive lymphoma who contracted an ethmoidal sinus infection due to Exserohilum rostratum after non-myeloablative allogeneic peripheral blood stem cell transplantation. E. rostratum is an extremely rare causative pathogen of invasive fungal infection. Phylogenetic tree analysis of the D1/D2 domains within the LSU rDNA identified the molecular structure of isolates. We believe this is the first description of E. rostratum infection in a patient who underwent hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

[Incidence of non-tumor anomalies of the facial sinuses on x-ray computed tomography of the brain of asymptomatic patients. Clinical and radiologic correlations between involvements of ethmoid cells and other sinus cavities].

Two hundred ninety five consecutive brain CT examinations of asymptomatic adults were studied prospectively for detection of nontumoral paranasal sinus abnormalities. CT alterations were found in 104 cases (35.3%), localized to the ethmoid cells in 83 cases, the maxillary sinuses in 56 cases, the sphenoid sinuses in 19 cases, and the frontal sinuses in 18 cases. The relationships between ethmoid cells disease and alterations of the large paranasal cavities are analysed, and the association with previous sinusitis or rhinitis is evaluated. Frontal sinus disease is associated in more than two-th

[Wegener's granulomatosis--a disease of many faces].

We describe a case of Wegener's granulomatosis. The first symptoms included severe headache subsiding only after administration of dexamethasone. Despite a great number of diagnostic tests involving CT and MR of the head, the cause of the headache remained unknown. Because a chest x-ray revealed a nodule in the right lung, the patient was sent to our Clinic. Reevaluation of CT and MR pointed to a massive ethmoid sinusitis. 7-days' course of antibiotics and corticosteroids induced remission of the lung nodule. Several diagnoses were made: neoplasm, bacterial ethmoid sinusitis, trigeminal neurit…
