Cortical Auditory Evoked Potentials in Children with Prenatal Exposure to Zika Virus.

Prenatal exposure to ZIKV can cause neurologic and auditory damage. The electrophysiological responses obtained by Cortical Auditory Evoked Potentials (CAEP) may provide an objective method to investigate the function of cortical auditory pathways in children exposed to ZIKV. This case series analyzed the findings of CAEP in prenatal-period ZIKV-exposed children with and without microcephaly. The CAEP was performed in a total of 24 children. Five magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images of the inner ear and brain of microcephalic children were analyzed and compared with CAEP measurements. Ventr

Characteristic Deviations of Auditory Evoked Potentials in Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Neurological, structural, and behavioral abnormalities are widely reported in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD); yet there are no objective markers to date. We postulated that by using dominant and nondominant ear data, underlying differences in auditory evoked potentials (AEPs) between ASD and control groups can be recognized. PURPOSE: The primary purpose was to identify if significant differences exist in AEPs recorded from dominant and nondominant ear stimulation in (1) children with ASD and their matched controls, (2) adults with ASD and their matched controls, a

Efficient Detection of Cortical Auditory Evoked Potentials in Adults Using Bootstrapped Methods.

BACKGROUND: Statistical detection methods are useful tools for assisting clinicians with cortical auditory evoked potential (CAEP) detection, and can help improve the overall efficiency and reliability of the test. However, many of these detection methods rely on parametric distributions when evaluating test significance, and thus make various assumptions regarding the electroencephalogram (EEG) data. When these assumptions are violated, reduced test sensitivities and/or increased or decreased false-positive rates can be expected. As an alternative to the parametric approach, test significance

Short- and long-latency auditory evoked potentials in individuals with vestibular dysfunction.

Purpose Evaluate the auditory pathway at the brainstem and cortical levels in individuals with peripheral vestibular dysfunction. Methods The study sample was composed 19 individuals aged 20-80 years that presented exam results suggestive of Peripheral Vestibular Disorder (PVD) or Vestibular Dysfunction (VD). Participants underwent evaluation of the auditory pathway through Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potentials (BAEP) (short latency) and P1, N1, P2, N2, and P300 cortical potentials (long latency). Results Nine individuals presented diagnosis of VD and 10 participants were diagnosed with PVD. Th

Population Pharmacokinetic/ Pharmacodynamic Modelling of Auditory-Evoked Event-Related Potentials with Lorazepam.

Event-related potentials (ERPs) are commonly used in Neuroscience research, particularly the P3 waveform because it is associated with cognitive brain functions and is easily elicited by auditory or sensory inputs. ERPs are affected by drugs such as lorazepam, which increase the latency and decrease the amplitude of the P3 wave. In this study, auditory-evoked ERPs were generated in 13 older healthy volunteers using an oddball tone paradigm, after administration of single 0.5 and 2 mg doses of lorazepam. Population pharmacokinetics (PK)/pharmacodynamics (PD) models were developed using nonlinea

A novel method of brainstem auditory evoked potentials using complex verbal stimuli.

BACKGROUND: The click and tone-evoked auditory brainstem responses are widely used in clinical practice due to their consistency and predictability. More recently, the speech-evoked responses have been used to evaluate subcortical processing of complex signals, not revealed by responses to clicks and tones. AIMS: Disyllable stimuli corresponding to familiar words can induce a pattern of voltage fluctuations in the brain stem resulting in a familiar waveform, and they can yield better information about brain stem nuclei along the ascending central auditory pathway. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We d

Direct current auditory evoked potentials during wakefulness, anesthesia, and emergence from anesthesia.

Direct current auditory evoked potentials (DC-AEPs) are a sensitive indicator of depth of anesthesia in animals. However, they have never been investigated in humans. To assess the potential usefulness of DC-AEPs as an indicator of anesthesia in humans, we performed an explorative study in which DC-AEPs were recorded during propofol and methohexital anesthesia in humans. DC-AEPs were recorded via 22 scalp electrodes in 19 volunteers randomly assigned to receive either propofol or methohexital. DC-AEPs were evoked by binaurally presented 2-s, 60-dB, 800-Hz tones; measurements were taken during

Effects of cholinergic blockers on auditory brain-stem evoked potentials in rats.

The pharmacology of auditory brain-stem evoked potentials (ABEP) pathways is poorly understood. There are anecdotal reports on the involvement of various neurotransmitters but they were not investigated systematically. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects on ABEP of muscarinic and nicotinic blockers, administered into the cerebral ventricles. Atropine sulfate, d-Tubocurarine and saline were injected stereotactically into the lateral cerebral ventricle of anesthetized male rats. Auditory clicks were given at a rate of 20 s(-1). ABEP recording was performed before and 30 min afte

[Diagnosis of hearing disorders in children with early evoked auditory brainstem potentials].

INTRODUCTION: Early Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry (BERA) is a modern noninvasive, objective neurophysiological method for evaluation of hearing threshold. This method is applied in the complex otoneurological diagnostic procedure. The aim of the complete functional diagnostic procedure of hearing impairment in children is to determine the hearing level for the purpose of an early, adequate and quality hearing stimulation which affects the morphophysiological development of the complex auditory system. There are programs for early detection of the hearing impairment which give high-risk

Correlation of middle latency auditory evoked potentials and cerebral blood flow changes.

The purpose of this study is to find the correlation between middle latency auditory evoked potentials (MLAEP) and sound activated single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) studies. This study was performed on six normal right-handed volunteers with a mean age of 35.2 +/- 7.6 years, using the split-dose technique. First, a SPECT study was performed on subjects in blinded, awake and silent states. After bilateral ears were stimulated with a click sound, MLAEP and a second SPECT study were performed. Subtraction of the first SPECT from the second SPECT revealed a statistically significa

Intraoperative measurements of auditory-evoked potentials in three patients with acoustic neuroma.

Auditory brainstem responses (ABRs), electrocochleograms and the evoked potentials from the internal auditory canal were recorded simultaneously in 3 acoustic neuroma (AN) patients. The neural conduction in the internal auditory canal was examined by recording the compound action potentials of the cochlear nerve. In an AN patient with wave I only in the ABR, the neural conduction of the excitement in the cochlear nerve was blocked within the internal auditory canal. In 2 AN patients with elongated interpeak latency differences between waves I and V in ABRs, the neural conduction velocity of th

Effects of altitude hypoxia on middle latency auditory evoked potentials in humans.

BACKGROUND: This paper presents an investigation of auditory evoked responses in humans subjected to high altitude hypoxic conditions. METHODS: Middle latency (MLAEPs) as well as short latency (BAEPs) evoked potentials were recorded in 10 healthy subjects, first at sea level (N), then 24 h (H1) and 72 h (H3) after their arrival at an altitude of 4350 m. At the same time, arterial blood parameters (PaO2, PaCO2 and pH) were measured and the clinical status of the subjects was assessed. RESULTS: In altitude conditions, the amplitude of BAEP peak V decreased (-17%). The MLAEP waves showed variat

Brain-stem trigeminal and auditory evoked potentials in multiple sclerosis: physiological insights.

Thirty-six patients with multiple sclerosis were evaluated by means of brain-stem trigeminal and auditory evoked potentials. The brain-stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) were abnormal in 26 patients (72.2%). Brain-stem trigeminal evoked potentials (BTEPs) yielded similar results, showing distorted waveforms and/or prolonged latencies in 25 patients (69.4%). As expected, the MRI proved to be the most efficient single test, revealing plaques in 86.4% of the patients evaluated. However, the diagnostic accuracy of MRI was lower than that provided by the combination of the BTEP and BAEP (88.9%

Acoustic nerve in peripheral neuropathy: a BAEP study. Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potentials.

We performed BAEP study to evaluate acoustic nerve involvement in 102 patients affected by peripheral neuropathies of different etiology, predominantly hereditary and inflammatory acquired neuropathies. Prolonged latency of early waves, indicative of slowing in VIII nerve conduction, was found in a high percentage of cases. Abnormalities were far more frequent (44% vs 14%) and severe in patients with demyelinating rather than axonal neuropathy. Among demyelinating neuropathy, the most severe latency delay was found in Hereditary Motor and Sensory Neuropathy type III. The pattern of acoustic ne

Audiologic manifestations in fetal alcohol syndrome assessed by brainstem auditory-evoked potentials.

In 29 of 36 children with fetal alcohol syndrome brainstem auditory-evoked potentials were performed and the auditory threshold was determined. The hearing of patients with a pathologic finding was then subject to a thorough ear-nose-throat examination. Additionally the IQ was determined and an audiolinguistic examination was carried out. Seventy-five % of the children showed a peripheral hearing disorder on the basis of conductive hearing loss. In two children (7%) sensorineural hearing loss was located to the inner ear. A dysfunction of the auditory pathway was found in 6 patients (21%). The

Asymmetries in topographic brain maps of auditory evoked potentials in the elderly.

We compared topographic brain maps of the middle response (MR) and late response (LR) auditory evoked potentials in two groups of elderly males. Subjects were categorized on the basis of the performance of the poorer hearing ear on the Synthetic Sentence Identification (SSI) test. Evoked potentials, obtained in response to 1000-Hz tone pips and tone bursts, were recorded under three conditions of sound stimulation:binaural (BIN), left ear only (LE), and right ear only (RE). Comparisons of the topographic brain maps generated by the two groups revealed significant asymmetry in the MR of the exp

Medical cure of a brainstem abscess and serial brainstem auditory evoked potentials.

The brainstem abscess of a nine-year-old girl with tetralogy of Fallot was cured after six weeks of parenteral antibiotic therapy, without surgical intervention. Serial studies of brainstem auditory evoked potentials were undertaken until the patient was clinically normal. To the authors' knowledge, this is only the second medically cured case reported in the literature, and it is the first case studied with serial brainstem auditory evoked potentials. If the clinical status allows, medical treatment of a brainstem abscess with appropriate antibiotics could be tried before surgical interventio

[Brainstem lesion in multiple sclerosis, blink reflex, and brainstem auditory evoked potentials].

Blink reflex (BR) and brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) were recorded from 168 patients with several diagnostic categories of multiple sclerosis, from which 98 complained brainstem symptoms (BSS+). From the whole group, the BR showed a higher degree of abnormality (45.75%) than BAEP (27.95). This range increased in the group BSS+ (52.15% for the BR and 34.9% for the BAEP) and even more when sings or symptoms of brainstem were present at the time of exploration (BSS+P) 60.4% for the BR and 41.3% for BAEP. Among patients who never complained brainstem symptoms, the BR disclosed a subcl
