Ocular infections and stewardship practices for Ophthalmologists: The RED EYE AMSP model.

Ocular infections, ranging from conjunctivitis and keratitis to postoperative and device-associated endophthalmitis, remain a significant cause of preventable visual morbidity worldwide. In India and other low- and middle-income countries, the irrational use of topical and systemic antimicrobials, often without microbiological confirmation, has contributed to the emergence of multidrug-resistant ocular pathogens. Fluoroquinolone-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa , methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus , and resistant Fusarium and Candida species are now major challenges in ophthalmic prac

Candida Species From Eye Infections: Drug Susceptibility, Virulence Factors, and Molecular Characterization.

PURPOSE: To determine the type of Candida species in ocular infections and to investigate the relationship of antifungal susceptibility prof … d by Vitek 2 and DNA sequencing methods C. parapsilosis was the most common species associated with eye infections. Irrespective of the virulence factors elaborated, the Candida isolates were susceptible to commonly used antifungal drugs such as amphotericin B and natamycin.

Eye infections due to Listeria monocytogenes in three cows and one horse.

A retrospective study was conducted to determine case histories, microbiological characteristics, and molecular subtypes associated with Listeria monocytogenes infections of the eye in large animals. For selected cases, environmental L. monocytogenes contamination patterns on case farms were also evaluated to probe for potential sources and spread of listerial eye infections. Records of 170 L. monocytogenes isolates from animal infections were reviewed to determine the fraction of isolates associated with eye infections (conjunctivitis, keratitis, and uveitis) of animals and to gather informat…

New approach for early, simple, and rapid detection of acute eye infections.

Several methods are known for the diagnosis of infections all of which require the use of well equipped laboratories and skilled personnel. For example: 1. Isolation and culturing of microorganisms from samples taken from body fluids. This method is complicated and time consuming. 2. Detection of antibodies. The main disadvantage of this method is the fact that the change in the level of antibodies occurs only after a few days from the onset of the disease. In the course of our work we found that already in the early stages of acute external eye infections, mucopolysaccharide degrading enzymes…

Distribution of pathogenic bacteria and antimicrobial sensitivity of eye infections in Suzhou.

AIM: To investigate the types of bacteria in patients with eye infections in Suzhou and their drug resistance to commonly used antibacterial drugs. METHODS: The clinical data of 155 patients were retrospectively collected in this study, and the pathogenic bacteria species and drug resistance of each pathogenic bacteria were analyzed. RESULTS: Among the 155 patients (age from 12 to 87 years old, with an average age of 57, 99 males and 56 females) with eye infections (160 eyes: 74 in the left eye, 76 in the right eye and 5 in both eyes, all of which were exogenous), 71 (45.81%) strains were gr…

[Eye infections caused by Purpureocillium lilacinum: A case report and literature review].

BACKGROUND: Purpureocillium lilacinum eye infections (previously called Paecilomyces lilacinus) make up a significant percentage of the recorded cases of infection by this fungus, and is considered as an emerging pathogen. AIMS: To report a case of ocular mycosis in a patient aged 70, with a double corneal transplantation in the right eye, and exhibiting a poor response to antifungal and surgical treatment. METHODS: Corneal ring and ocular tissues obtained by surgical procedures were cultured in common mycological media. Molecular identification of the isolated fungus was obtained. RESULTS:…

Prevention of infections associated with combat-related eye, maxillofacial, and neck injuries.

The percentage of combat wounds involving the eyes, maxillofacial, and neck regions reported in the literature is increasing, representing 36% of all combat-related injuries at the start of the Iraq War. Recent meta-analysis of 21st century eye, maxillofacial, and neck injuries described combat injury incidences of 8% to 20% for the face, 2% to 11% for the neck, and 0.5% to 13% for the eye and periocular structures. This article reviews recent data from military and civilian studies to support evidence-based recommendations for the prevention of infections associated with combat-related eye, m

Eye for an eye: near-fatal outcome of fungal infection in a young, diabetic girl.

In this report, we describe the case of a young, diabetic girl with ketoacidosis who suffered sudden loss of vision of the right eye. The loss of vision was caused by an invasive rhino-orbital-cerebral fungal infection (mucormycosis) with extensive periorbital thrombosis. Despite maximal antifungal and surgical treatment (including exenteration of the right orbit), the clinical situation deteriorated. It was only after overcoming the difficulties of managing her hyperglycaemia that the patient's condition stabilised and her life was saved. Another factor contributing to this girls' survival wa

Nanoparticle ocular immunotherapy for herpesvirus surface eye infections evaluated in cat infection model.

Ocular herpes simplex type 1 (HSV-1) infections can trigger conjunctivitis, keratitis, uveitis, and occasionally retinitis, and is a major c … gonist nanoparticles, along with suppression of FHV-1 replication. In cats with naturally occurring eye infections either proven or suspected to involve FHV-1, ocular nanoparticle treated animals experienced resolution of signs within several days of treatment, including resolution of keratitis and corneal ulcers. In a cat model of recrudescent FHV-1 infection, …

Antibiotic resistance profile in eye infections in a reference centre in Floridablanca, Colombia.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: In view of the increasing bacterial resistance to antibiotics, it is necessary to determine it locally in order to serve as a guide in clinical management. The purpose of this study was to characterise the pattern of antibiotic sensitivity in cases of eye infections in a third level ophthalmological institution in Floridablanca (Colombia). MATERIALS AND METHODS: An observational cross-sectional study in which an analysis was made of the culture and antibiogram reports of specimens taken from cases of conjunctivitis, infectious keratitis, and endophthalmitis between J…

Nematode infections of the eye: toxocariasis, onchocerciasis, diffuse unilateral subacute neuroretinitis, and cysticercosis.

Nematode infections of the eye are common in different parts of the world, but some are usually encountered only in developing nations, such as onchocerciasis and cysticercosis. Ocular toxocariasis is a well-known cause of unilateral ocular disease affecting mainly children and young adults, and is usually caused by T canis. Prevention of ocular toxocariasis is based on such measures as appropriate health care for dogs and cats, including regular anthelmintic treatments, preventing contamination of the environment with feces, and promoting responsible pet ownership [1,49-51]. Onchocerciasis is

From systemic disease to the eye: Why senescence deserves attention in ocular infections.

The global increase in life expectancy has led to a growing elderly population, bringing new challenges in managing infectious diseases. Advancing age is accompanied by progressive dysfunction of both innate and adaptive immunity, resulting in impaired responses to pathogens and elevated morbidity and mortality. Cellular senescence, a state of permanent cell-cycle arrest with extensive molecular and phenotypic changes, including chromatin remodelling and the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP), has emerged as a key factor in this process. Though initially protective as a tumor-sup
