Persistent infection of mice with Pichinde virus associated with failure to thrive.

Intracranial inoculation of neonatal mice of certain inbred strains with Pichinde virus has been found to be fatal, but Balb/c neonates survive such infection. Survival of Balb/c mice after neonatal inoculation was not linked to the major histocompatability complex. Virus was gradually cleared in surviving Balb/c mice but could be detected in the brain and kidneys for up to 9 months after infection. These animals were not immunologically tolerant but exhibited high antibody titers to viral antigens. MHC restricted cytotoxic T cell activity was also demonstrable in persistently infected mice fo

A multifaceted intervention for infants with failure to thrive. A prospective study.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether a multifaceted intervention decreased the incidence of failure to thrive (FTT) in a group of preterm infants with low birth weights and improved the 3-year intelligence, health, growth, and behavior status of the children with FTT. DESIGN: Three-year, prospective, randomized, clinical trial. SETTING: Eight large university hospital sites throughout the United States. SAMPLE: Nine hundred fourteen preterm infants with low birth weights who were born at the sites and met study criteria. INTERVENTION: Home visits weekly during the first year of life and biweekl…

Periweaning failure to thrive syndrome (PFTS): A growing concern in swine health.

BACKGROUND: Porcine Periweaning Failure to Thrive syndrome (PFTS) is a complex and scarcely investigated syndrome that has been of increasing concern in the swine industry during the last decade. Its aetiology is believed to be multifactorial, and although both infectious and non-infectious factors may be involved, including a possible genetic predisposition, consistent association needs to be elucidated. MAIN BODY: PFTS is characterised by growth retardation and non-specific clinical symptoms that may include progressive debilitation of weaned pigs that typically emerge within two to three w…

Autosomal Dominant Pseudohypoaldosteronism Type 1 in a Newborn With Failure to Thrive.

Pseudohypoaldosteronism type 1 is a rare genetic disorder characterized by salt wasting and resistance to mineralocorticoids due to mutations in the NR3C2 gene which codes for the aldosterone receptor proteins in the kidneys. This case study involves an infant who presented with poor growth and significant hyponatremia. There was improvement in growth and correction of hyponatremia with sodium supplementation, later found to carry a new genetic variant causing autosomal dominant pseudohypoaldosteronism type 1. A 14-day-old newborn presented with failure to thrive, severe hyponatremia, mild hyp…

Failure to Thrive Following Cytoreduction and Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy: Causes and Consequences.

BACKGROUND: Failure to thrive (FTT) is a complex syndrome of nutritional failure and functional decline. Readmission for FTT following cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS HIPEC) is common but underexamined. This study aims to determine features, risk factors, and prognostic significance of FTT following CRS HIPEC. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We reviewed patients who underwent CRS HIPEC from 2010 to 2018 at our institution. Patients were categorized into no readmission, FTT readmission, and other readmission. FTT was determined by coding and chart review. We comp…

Recurrent Fever and Failure to Thrive in an 11-Year-Old Boy.

Recurrent fever is frequent among children and mostly associated with viral infections inoculated via social contacts with others of the same age. Rarely, severe conditions such as hematological malignancies, pediatric rheumatoid diseases, chronic infections, or inherited recurrent fever syndromes are causative. Herein, we present the case of an 11-year-old boy with frequently recurring high-fever episodes since early childhood, failure to thrive, and iron deficiency who was found to have classical celiac disease (CD) with highly elevated tissue transglutaminase and anti-gliadin antibodies and…

Feeding dysfunctions and failure to thrive in neonates with congenital heart diseases.

Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common neonatal congenital malformation. The variety and severity of clinical presentation depend on the cardiac structures involved and their functional impact. The management of newborns with CHD requires a multidisciplinary approach, in which the nutritional aspect plays an important role. An adequate caloric intake during either preand post-surgical period, in fact, improves the outcome of these patients. In addition, the failure to thrive of these children in childhood has been related to long-term cognitive delay (attention deficit disorders, ag…

Cricopharyngeal achalasia associated with laryngomalacia as a cause of failure to thrive.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a case of concurrent cricopharyngeal achalasia with laryngomalacia as a cause of failure to thrive, and to review the literature and management options of cricopharyngeal achalasia in the paediatric population. METHODS: A chart review was performed on a four-month-old male, referred for failure to thrive, and diagnosed with cricopharyngeal achalasia and laryngomalacia. A PubMed and Embase search for 'cricopharyngeal achalasia' and 'laryngomalacia' was conducted. A review of reported paediatric cricopharyngeal achalasia patients, with emphasis on management options, was …

Congenital sucrase-isomaltase deficiency presenting with failure to thrive, hypercalcemia, and nephrocalcinosis.

BACKGROUND: Disaccharide Intolerance Type I (Mendelian Interance in Man database: *222900) is a rare inborn error of metabolism resulting from mutation in sucrase-isomaltase (Enzyme Catalyzed 3.2.1.48). Usually, infants with SI deficiency come to attention because of chronic diarrhea and nutritional evidence of malabsorption. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe an atypical presentation of this disorder in a 10-month-old infant. In addition to chronic diarrhea, the child displayed severe and chronic hypercalcemia, the evaluation of which was negative. An apparently coincidental right orbital hemang

Failure to thrive is an early symptom of the imerslund Gräsbeck syndrome.

PURPOSE: The Imerslund-Gräsbeck syndrome (IGS) is a rare inherited disorder characterized by a megaloblastic anemia due to a selective vitamin B12 malabsorption in association with a mild proteinuria. Usually recurrent infections, gastrointestinal complaints, and pallor are presenting symptoms. We report two cases of IGS with an unusual presentation. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Two girls are described with the Imerslund-Gräsbeck syndrome who had a failure to thrive as a presenting symptom without infections or gastrointestinal complaints. The diagnosis of IGS was based on marked macrocytic anemia, …

An Unusual Presentation of Hyponatremia in a Premature Infant With Failure to Thrive.

Hyponatremia in neonates is a rare but not uncommon finding, especially among preterm neonates, and can be life-threatening, requiring careful diagnostic evaluation and management. We describe a two-month-old infant born at 33 weeks of gestation presenting with severe hyponatremia and failure to thrive (FTT) to highlight the diagnostic and management approach and challenges in such cases. A two-month-old male child presented with abdominal distension and poor weight gain. Admission weight was 2.72 kgs (<3rd percentile). Lab results revealed a serum sodium of 108 mEq/L and potassium of 2.6 mEq/…

Prevalence and determinants of failure to thrive in children with vesico-ureteral reflux.

AIM: To assess the prevalence and determinants of failure to thrive (FTT) among patients with vesico-ureteral reflux (VUR) and evaluating the effects of supplementation on growth in patients with urinary solute losses. METHODS: We retrospectively enrolled 1277 patients with VUR (mean age at diagnosis = 6.5 months). Patients with FTT were screened for renal tubular function impairment (TFI). If fractional excretion of sodium (FENa) >2% or blood bicarbonate <20 mmol/L, supplementation was provided. RESULTS: Among 1277 patients, 56 (4.4%) had FTT. Of these, 42 (75%) presented extrarenal causes …

Failure to thrive - an overlooked manifestation of KMT2B-related dystonia: a case presentation.

BACKGROUND: KMT2B-related dystonia is a recently described form of childhood onset dystonia that may improve with deep brain stimulation. Prior reports have focused on neurologic features including prominent bulbar involvement without detailing general health consequences that may result from orolingual dysfunction. We describe a family with novel KMT2B mutation with several members with failure to thrive to highlight this non-neurologic, but consequential impact of mutation in this gene. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 15-year old female who was admitted and evaluated for failure t…
