Subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn: clinical and histopathological correlation.

Subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn is a rare benign panniculitis found in term and post-term neonates. Diagnosis is based on clinical characteristics and specific alterations in the adipocytes, detected by anatomical pathology. Subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn can occur in uncomplicated pregnancy and childbirth. However, perinatal complications such as asphyxia, hypothermia, seizures, preeclampsia, meconium aspiration, and even whole-body cooling used in newborns with perinatal hypoxia/anoxia may be associated with this entity.

Axillary lump: an unusual presentation of fat necrosis in the breast.

The clinical presentation of an axillary lump, in majority of cases, raises suspicion of an enlarged lymph node due to malignant causes. In this case report, we established a diagnosis of an axillary lump caused by fat necrosis. We present this case report with review of the literature to familiarize clinicians with this condition.

Isolated abdominal fat tissue inflammation and necrosis in a cat.

This report describes a rare clinical case of a 4.5-month-old, female domestic shorthair, cat with isolated abdominal fat tissue inflammation and necrosis, resembling human omental panniculitis. Its possible relationship with pancreatitis or bile induced chemical peritonitis is also discussed. The overall clinical course was considered benign. Initial clinical signs were vomiting and anorexia, presumably due to inflammation, followed by mass development. It was speculated that, eventually, the kitten was vomiting because of mechanical pressure from the mass, and that this pressure subsided as

Fat necrosis of breast: a potential pitfall in breast MRI.

Fat necrosis is a benign nonsuppurative inflammatory process of adipose tissue. Occasionally fat necrosis may mimic a breast cancer clinically, mammographically, and sonographically. There have been some previous reports on the MR imaging of the fat necrosis. In some MR findings of fat necrosis, it was difficult to distinguish it from malignant lesions. We report a case of fat necrosis presenting the irregular enhancement with the non-enhancing area of central areas on MRI.

Subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn: a review of 11 cases.

Subcutaneous fat necrosis (SFN) of the newborn is uncommon and usually occurs in the first weeks of life following a complicated delivery. The frequency with which hypercalcemia develops as a complication is uncertain. We report the clinical features of SFN in 11 patients seen between 1991 and 1998. Ten were born by cesarean section and fetal distress was present in the majority. It was not possible to distinguish SFN from sclerema neonatorum by time of onset or related infant diseases. Hypercalcemia developed in four infants up to 7 weeks after the onset of SFN. Infants with this condition sh…

Encapsulated fat necrosis in a patient with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.

Mobile encapsulated lipoma, first described by Sahl in 1978 (1), is characterized by its great mobility within subcutaneous adipose tissue and presentation with or without tenderness when the nodules are manipulated. This lipoma's histopathology is very characteristic; i.e., it consists of mature viable or degenerative lipocytes encapsulated by fibrous tissue. We report a case of this so-called mobile encapsulated lipoma involving a patient with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. This case is the first report of mobile encapsulated lipoma in a patient with a disease of this type. We discuss its pathogene

[Hematoma and fat necrosis of the breast: mammographic and echographic features].

The mammary gland is a common site for traumas which often lead to the formation of intraglandular hematomas. The abundance of fat tissue in this gland accounts for the relatively high frequency of fat necrosis and self-digestion of fat by lipases after traumas, i.e., fat necrosis, cystosteatonecrosis, lipophagic granuloma. Broadly speaking, hematomas are easily diagnosed by both mammography and US. However, scarring and the formation of lipophagic granulomas due to hemorrhage result in the diagnostic features which are difficult to distinguish from malignant breast nodules. In our study, we e…

Nodular cystic fat necrosis in a patient with erythema nodosum.

Nodular cystic fat necrosis shows a distinctive spectrum of clinical and histological features. Most of the lesions are mobile subcutaneous nodules in regions vulnerable to trauma, such as the elbows, knees, and shins. There have been no reports of an association with other conditions. The histology is characterized by encapsulated fat necrosis in which multiple, non-viable adipocytes are surrounded by condensed fibrous tissue. We report a case of early stage nodular cystic fat necrosis associated with erythema nodosum.

Coexistence of arthritis, subcutaneous fat necrosis, and pseudocyst of pancreas.

A 29-year-old woman was observed with subcutaneous fat necrosis, arthritis, and a giant pseudocyst of the pancreas. Surgical removal of the cyst resulted in a remission of the inflammatory process in the joints as well as within the subcutaneous tissue.

Peripancreatic fat necrosis worsens acute pancreatitis independent of pancreatic necrosis via unsaturated fatty acids increased in human pancreatic necrosis collections.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Peripancreatic fat necrosis occurs frequently in necrotising pancreatitis. Distinguishing markers from mediators of severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) is important since targeting mediators may improve outcomes. We evaluated potential agents in human pancreatic necrotic collections (NCs), pseudocysts (PCs) and pancreatic cystic neoplasms and used pancreatic acini, peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and an acute pancreatitis (AP) model to determine SAP mediators. METHODS: We measured acinar and PBMC injury induced by agents increased in NCs and PCs. Outcomes of caerule…

Pericardial fat necrosis: an underdiagnosed cause of acute chest pain.

Pericardial fat necrosis (PFN) is a rare, benign cause of acute pleuritic chest pain, sharing symptomatic overlap with more serious cardiopulmonary conditions. We present a case of a woman in her early 50s who experienced progressive, left-sided pleuritic chest pain. Initial investigations, including an ECG, troponin and D-dimer, were negative. On re-presentation, inflammatory markers were raised and a small left pleural effusion was noted. CT pulmonary angiography, performed to exclude pulmonary embolism, revealed focal pericardial fat inflammation, retrospectively diagnosed as PFN. Follow-up…

Forgotten Surgical Sponge Mimicking Fat Necrosis Following Breast Reduction Surgery.

A forgotten surgical sponge following surgery, also called textiloma, is a rare yet significant issue, whereas fat necrosis is more prevalent, particularly in breast surgery. We present a case experiencing persistent postoperative pain, a lump in the right breast, delayed wound healing, and the formation of a fistula following breast reduction surgery. The patient's symptoms were managed conservatively for 1 year because they were initially misdiagnosed as fat necrosis. A subsequent mammogram suggested a retained surgical sponge. The diagnosis of a textiloma was verified during surgical interv…

Surgically treated mediastinal fat necrosis: an exception to conservative treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic menorrhagia causes anemia and impairment of life quality. In this study the aim was the screening of bleeding disorders in adolescents and young women with menorrhagia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was performed prospectively by pediatric hematologists. A form including demographic characteristics of the patients, bleedings other than menorrhagia, familial bleeding history, characteristics of the menorrhagia, and impairment of life quality due to menorrhagia was filled out by the researcher during a face-to-face interview with the patient. A pictorial blood assessment c

Idiopathic scrotal fat necrosis: an unusual cause of scrotal pain.

The clinical differential diagnosis of scrotal pain with a mass in a prepubertal boy is difficult. Often conditions such as testicular torsion and epididymo-orchitis are diagnosed. We present a rare cause of scrotal pain, idiopathic scrotal fat necrosis. This condition has a typical clinical presentation and ultrasound findings that have been described in a limited number of case reports. However, if it is diagnosed correctly and confirmed with ultrasound, we hope that people will be treated without surgical intervention. We present a case of scrotal wall necrosis and a literature review.
