The Relationship between Socioeconomic Status and Narrative Abilities in a Group of Italian Normally Developing Children.

OBJECTIVE: Only limited and conflicting information is available regarding the relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) and narrative abilities. Besides, the role fathers' SES plays in the development of their children's narrative abilities has never been investigated. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between fathers' and mothers' SES and narrative abilities of their children assessed with the Italian version of the Bus Story Test (I-BST). SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A total of 505 normally developing Italian children were enrolled in the study. Information regarding par

[Parental relationship from the perspectives of children, adolescents and clinicians. Development and clinical validation of the Parental-Representation-Screening-Questionnaire (PRSQ)].

The Parental-Representation-Screening-Questionnaire (PRSQ) is a new instrument designed to asses how children and adolescents evaluate their relationship with their parents. The aim of the questionnaire is to assess those aspects in the child-parent relationship that are crucial for a psychopathological risk. Conceptually, the PRSQ is based on cognitive self theory and systemic family theory. The PRSQ consists of 8 scales (36 items) for each parent: "freedom of decision", "emotional burden by the parents", "fears / overprotection", "conflict", "hostility / indifference", "aid for the parents",

Compound Galactosylceramidase Gene (GALC) Heterozygosity in a Boy with Infantile Krabbe Disease (KD).

Krabbe disease (KD) (globoid cell leukodystrophy) is a degenerative, lysosomal storage disease, caused by a severe loss of galactocerebrosidase (GALC) enzymatic activity. The inheritance is autosomal recessive. KD affects the white matter of the central and peripheral nervous systems. We present a 3 year old boy in whom the disease had an 'infantile' or 'classic' presentation, with spasticity, irritability, and developmental delay. In addition the boy showed progressive severe motor and mental deterioration, difficulties in swallowing and decerebration. Molecular analysis revealed that the chi

Associations Between Paternal Sensitivity and Cognitive and Behavioural Outcomes in Preterm Children: An Individual Participant Data Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Children born preterm (PT) face elevated neurodevelopmental risk, yet the role of fathers' sensitive caregiving in this process remains understudied. OBJECTIVE: To test whether observed paternal sensitivity predicts cognitive and behavioural outcomes in PT children and moderates prematurity-related risk. METHODS: Individual participant data (IPD) from two prospective cohorts in Australia and Israel (2009-2014) were pooled (N = 207; 151 PT, 56 term). Father-child and mother-child dyadic interactions at 6-12 months corrected age were observed and coded with the emotional availabili

Mechanisms in the intergenerational effect of maternal childhood maltreatment on offspring externalizing symptoms: The role of maternal and paternal parenting.

BACKGROUND: Although maternal childhood maltreatment has been associated with offspring externalizing symptoms, little is known about the potential mechanisms that contribute to breaking the intergenerational effect of maternal childhood maltreatment. OBJECTIVE: The current study aimed to (a) investigate the intergenerational effect between maternal childhood maltreatment and offspring externalizing symptoms in the Chinese family; (b) examine maternal supportive and harsh parenting as potential mediators of this intergenerational effect; and (c) explore the moderating roles of paternal suppor

Longitudinal links from attachment with mothers and fathers to adolescent substance use: Internalizing and externalizing pathways.

The present study examined whether internalizing and externalizing symptoms may mediate the association between adolescent-mother and adolescent-father attachment and substance use. The sample included 167 adolescents (47% girls) who were assessed at five time points with approximately 1 year between each assessment, beginning in middle adolescence (Mage = 14.07) and ending in the transition to young adulthood (Mage = 18.39). The adolescents reported their perceived attachment with both their mother and father during middle adolescence (Times 1 and 2), their internalizing and externalizing sym

The association between paternal psychopathology and adolescent depression and anxiety: A systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Paternal psychopathology is associated with various adolescent outcomes. With emotional disorders presenting a significant public health concern in the adolescent age group, the aim of this systematic review was to synthesize evidence on the relationship between paternal mental health and adolescent anxiety or depression. METHODS: PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Ovid MEDLINE, Global Health, and PsycINFO were searched for articles which primarily aimed to investigate the relationship between paternal mental health (exposure) and adolescent anxiety or depression (outcome). Residence time, children's mental health, and parent-child relationships in separated families: A longitudinal study.

This study examined the longitudinal association between the division of children's residence time between parents and their depressive and anxiety symptoms using children's self-reports. We also explored whether the quality of mother-child and father-child relationships moderated the associations between residence time with the father and children's mental health symptoms. The sample included 266 children aged 6-16 years at baseline from 217 families recruited through family counseling offices across Norway. Mixed-effects regression models were used to assess associations between a continuous…

How children with experiences of intimate partner violence towards the mother understand and relate to their father.

The aim of this study was to describe how, in the aftermath of intimate partner violence against the mother, children understand and relate to their father. Face-to-face interviews with four girls and four boys, aged between eight and twelve, were analysed using an interpretative phenomenological approach. All of the children had been exposed to the father's violence towards the mother. Two super ordinate themes were identified in the analysis: the disjunctive image of the father and being entangled in a conflict. The children's understanding of the father and their relationship with him was b

Women's characteristics and gender role attitudes: support for father involvement with children.

Women's (N = 364) personal characteristics and gender role attitudes were examined in relation to their support for father involvement with children. The respondents completed measures of trust, attitudes toward women, hostility, self-esteem, and father involvement. Nontraditional gender role attitudes, positive ratings of their own interpersonal trust, and low hostility toward men were predictive of the respondents' support for father involvement. Participant demographics (including age, marital status, and number of children) were unrelated to their views of father involvement. Results indic

Clinically referred children and adolescents: fathers, family constellations, and other demographic factors.

Investigated the likelihood that clinically referred youth have contact with their biological father. Family demographics such as family constellation, race/ethnicity, and socioeconomic status were also explored. Based on 356 consecutive therapy and assessment referrals to an outpatient clinic, slightly less than half (42.4%) of the children and adolescents referred due to psychological problems and more than half (67.8%) of the youth referred due to learning difficulties lived with both their biological mother and biological father. For those who did not live with both of their biological par

Implications of unique and shared variance of interparental conflict and child emotional insecurity through parental depressive symptomology.

The goal of this study was to unpack processes that may lead to child emotional insecurity. Guided by the emotional security theory (EST/EST-R), we examined the mediational role of parental depressive symptomology between interparental conflict (IPC), both constructive and destructive, and child emotional insecurity at age 36-months. We partitioned unique variance of IPC from shared using an extension of the common fate model. We used two-wave data from the Building Strong Families project, which consisted of racially diverse couples/parents (N = 4,424) who were low income and unmarried at the

The degree of fathers' involvement in taking care of children with diabetesand its implications in family functioning in the assessment of diabetic children's mothers.

INTRODUCTION: Children's type 1 diabetes is one of the most mentally aggravating chronic diseases for the patient and his/her parents. The disease disturbs relationships in the family, disrupts communication, and enforces a change in the organisation of daily life. THE AIM OF THE STUDY: The aim of the study was to gather opinions about fathers' involvement in taking care of children with type 1 diabetes. Opinions were stated by mothers of sick children regarding managing of diabetes and its impact on the functioning and relationships of the family. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The survey (conducted

Reciprocal Relations Between Parenting Behaviors and Conduct Disorder Symptoms in Preschool Children.

Reciprocal relations between children's conduct disorder (CD) symptoms and parenting behaviors were examined across the preschool years. Participants were 199 children (M = 44.26 months, SD = 3.37; 92 girls) and their 199 mothers and 158 fathers. CD symptoms were assessed via structured interviews; parenting was assessed via observational and self-report measures. Fixed effects models were used to assess within-individual changes and traditional cross-lagged models were used to assess between-individual changes; comparisons by sex were also carried out. Increases in maternal overreactivity pre

Testosterone Levels, Challenging Parenting Behavior, and Protective Parenting Behavior: A Correlational Study Among First-Time Fathers in the First Year of Fatherhood.

Only few studies have examined whether testosterone levels are involved in parenting behaviors other than sensitivity and nurturing behavior. This preregistered study examined associations between fathers' hair testosterone levels, challenging parenting behavior (CPB), and protective parenting. Seventy first-time partnered fathers with a healthy-born infant (M = 6.70 months, SD = 2.16) visited our research center for hormonal and behavioral assessments. Hair samples were collected to measure testosterone concentrations over the past month. CPB was observed during father-infant free play intera

Negative internal working models as mechanisms that link mothers' and fathers' personality with their parenting: A short-term longitudinal study.

OBJECTIVE: Research on associations between parents' personality and parenting has a long history, but mechanisms that explain them remain unsettled. We examined parents' explicit and implicit negative internal working models (IWMs) of the child, assessed at toddler age, as linking parental personality and parenting. METHOD: Mothers and fathers from 200 community families provided personality self-reports (Neuroticism, Agreeableness, Empathy, and Anger/Hostility) when their children were infants. When children were toddlers, the explicit negative IWMs included self-reported low-mentalizing re

Associations of contextual risk and protective factors with fathers' parenting practices in the postdeployment environment.

Deployment separation and reunifications are salient contexts that directly impact effective family functioning and parenting for military fathers. Yet, we know very little about determinants of postdeployed father involvement and effective parenting. The present study examined hypothesized risk and protective factors of observed parenting for 282 postdeployed fathers who served in the National Guard/Reserves. Preintervention data were employed from fathers participating in the After Deployment, Adaptive Parenting Tools randomized control trial. Parenting practices were obtained from direct ob
