Super-natural fears.

Supernatural fears, although common, are not as well-understood as natural fears and phobias (e.g., social, blood, and animal phobias) which are prepared by evolution, such that they are easily acquired through direct experience and relatively immune to cognitive mediation. In contrast, supernatural fears do not involve direct experience but seem to be related to sensory or cognitive biases in the interpretation of stimuli as well as culturally driven cognitions and beliefs. In this multidisciplinary synthesis and collaborative review, we claim that supernatural beliefs are "super natural." Th…

Children's specific fears.

BACKGROUND: Most children experience some degree of fear during their development. Specific fears are considered as an appropriate response provided that they are proportionate to the intensity of the perceived threat. Our aim is to present the prevalence of specific fears among children in the Great Britain, their socio-demographic correlates, in particular their association with ethnicity. METHODS: Data on the child's experience of specific fears were obtained from parents of a national representative sample of 5- to 16-year-olds using the Development and Well-Being Assessment. Biographic, …

Belonephobia--a fear of needles.

Belonephobia is an unreasonable and altered response due to the fear of needles. It affects up to 10% of the population and has implications for treatment and follow up, especially in the paediatric setting (see Case study). A three step behavioural approach involving recognition and relaxation, control and preparation, and graded exposure, can be effective in overcoming belonephobia. This will assist with non-urgent minor procedures being undertaken.

The inhibition of acquired fear.

A conditioned stimulus (CS) associated with a fearsome unconditioned stimulus (US) generates learned fear. Acquired fear is at the root of a variety of mental disorders, among which phobias, generalized anxiety, the posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and some forms of depression. The simplest way to inhibit learned fear is to extinguish it, which is usually done by repeatedly presenting the CS alone, so that a new association, CS-"no US", will eventually overcome the previously acquired CS-US association. Extinction was first described by Pavlov as a form of "internal inhibition" and was rec…

Shame and the fear of feeling.

TOPIC: Toxic shame and the concomitant fear of feeling are core issues needing to be addressed during group therapy with adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse. PURPOSE: To increase awareness of the toxic shame that survivors experience and to describe the impact of group therapy based on a family systems model. SOURCE: The authors' clinical experiences. CONCLUSIONS: Symptom management, repatterning of cognitive distortions, and the improvement of self-care strategies are identified as crucial aspects of healing shame-based feelings and behaviors. Group treatment offers members the oppor…

Modelling social fear in mice: advancements in social fear conditioning and social defeat paradigms.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a common and chronic mental illness whose pathogenesis is not yet fully understood, and treatment responses are often suboptimal. Animal models play a crucial role in elucidating its neurobiological mechanisms and developing novel therapeutic approaches. This article systematically reviews two primary mouse modelling paradigms: social fear conditioning (SFC) and social defeat. The SFC model induces specific social fear behaviors by pairing a social stimulus with an aversive event, whereas the social defeat model, by simulating social conflict and psychological …

Innate anxiety in rats determines vulnerability to social fear conditioning and social fear memory.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) involves excessive fear of social situations and can be induced by social trauma. However, the underlying mechanisms of individual differences in the formation of social fear memory remain unclear. To address this gap, we adapted our mouse social fear conditioning paradigm for rats (rSFC) and compared adult male rats selectively bred for high (HAB) or low (LAB) anxiety-related behaviour and non-selected controls (NAB). HAB and LAB rats are established as a model displaying genetically determined extremes in socio-emotional behaviours. Conditioned HAB, LAB, and NAB…

Cortisol Imbalance and Fear Learning in PTSD: Therapeutic Approaches to Control Abnormal Fear Responses.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is mainly characterized by dysregulated fear responses, including hyperarousal and intrusive re-experiencing of traumatic memories. This work delves into the intricate interplay between abnormal fear responses, cortisol dysregulation, and the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis, elucidating their role in the manifestation of PTSD. Given the persistent nature of PTSD symptoms and the limitations of conventional therapies, innovative interventions are urgently needed. One promising avenue of research revolves around the modulation of cortisol through t…

Computational modeling of fear and stress responses: validation using consolidated fear and stress protocols.

Dysfunction in fear and stress responses is intrinsically linked to various neurological diseases, including anxiety disorders, depression, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Previous studies using in vivo models with Immediate-Extinction Deficit (IED) and Stress Enhanced Fear Learning (SEFL) protocols have provided valuable insights into these mechanisms and aided the development of new therapeutic approaches. However, assessing these dysfunctions in animal subjects using IED and SEFL protocols can cause significant pain and suffering. To advance the understanding of fear and stress, this st…

Human fear neurobiology reimagined: Can brain-derived biotypes predict fear-based disorders after trauma?

Human studies of fear neurobiology have established neural circuits that are activated to threatening stimuli, whether it be during Pavlovian fear conditioning or in response to naturally occurring threats. This circuitry involves the central and basolateral amygdala, as well as the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis, insula, hippocampus, and regulatory regions such as the anterior cingulate cortex and ventromedial prefrontal cortex. While research has found that fear-based disorders, such as anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder, as associated with dysfunction in these circuits, there i…

Fear learning circuitry is biased toward generalization of fear associations in posttraumatic stress disorder.

Fear conditioning is an established model for investigating posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, symptom triggers may vaguely resemble the initial traumatic event, differing on a variety of sensory and affective dimensions. We extended the fear-conditioning model to assess generalization of conditioned fear on fear processing neurocircuitry in PTSD. Military veterans (n=67) consisting of PTSD (n=32) and trauma-exposed comparison (n=35) groups underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging during fear conditioning to a low fear-expressing face while a neutral face was explicitly unre…

Understanding fear of pain in chronic pain: interoceptive fear conditioning as a novel approach.

The current review deals with interoceptive conditioning as a viable mechanism maintaining fear of pain: The available literature suggests that interoceptive - i.e., internal bodily - sensations may become predictors of pain and will subsequently elicit fear of pain. After a short overview of interoceptive (fear) conditioning and its role in the maintenance of panic disorder, the existing literature on conditioning in the field of pain and fear of pain is reviewed. Next, the authors propose an interoceptive fear conditioning model of fear of pain, suggesting that bodily sensations can function…

Fear is fast in phobic individuals: amygdala activation in response to fear-relevant stimuli.

BACKGROUND: Two core characteristics of pathologic fear are its rapid onset and resistance to cognitive regulation. We hypothesized that activation of the amygdala early in the presentation of fear-relevant visual stimuli would distinguish phobics from nonphobics. METHODS: Chronometry of amygdala activation to phobia-relevant pictures was assessed in 13 spider phobics and 14 nonphobics using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). RESULTS: Blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) responses in the amygdala early in picture processing consistently differentiated between phobic and nonphobic s…

Increased social fear and decreased fear of objects in monkeys with neonatal amygdala lesions.

The amygdala has been implicated in the mediation of emotional and species-specific social behavior (Kling et al., 1970; Kling and Brothers, … returned to their mothers for rearing. At 6-8 months of age, the lesioned animals demonstrated less fear of novel objects such as rubber snakes than age-matched controls. However, they displayed substantially more fear behavior than controls during dyadic social interactions. These results suggest that neonatal amygdala lesions dissociate a system that …

Ictal Fear in Children: Localizing Value and Insights Into the Mechanisms of Fear in the Developing Brain.

BACKGROUND: Rigorously documented ictal fear is infrequent, and its anatomoclinical correlations remain poorly defined. We aim to determine its localizing value and provide novel evidence of the clinical importance and theoretical meaning about ictal fear and emotional processes in children. METHODS: Of 1624 consecutive pediatric patients assessed, we identify seven with carefully defined and strict video-electroencephalography (EEG)-recorded ictal fear (130 seizures), two with additional intracerebral stereo-EEG and electrical brain stimulation examinations. A comprehensive study of EEG and …

The contribution of contextual fear in the anxiolytic effect of chlordiazepoxide in the fear-potentiated startle test.

This study evaluated the extent to which a reduction in contextual fear contributes to the anxiolytic effect of benzodiazepines in the fear-potentiated startle response. To this end, chlordiazepoxide, an anxiolytic often used as positive control in preclinical drug studies, and zolpidem, known to have sedative properties and to be devoid of anxiolytic effects, were tested in two contexts: the same context as training had taken place and an alternative context. In addition, the level of muscle relaxation was assessed in a grip strength test. Chlordiazepoxide (2.5-10 mg/kg) decreased the fear-po…

Fearfulness, neuroticism/anxiety, and COMT Val158Met in long-term fear conditioning and extinction.

Individual differences in long-term stability of fear memories are of potential relevance for stable dispositions related to threat processing, such as neuroticism/anxiety and fearfulness. As previous research suggests a prominent role of dopamine for the retention of conditioned and extinguished fear, dopaminergic gene polymorphisms may also relate to individual differences in fear stability. While the COMT Val158Met polymorphism causes individual differences in prefrontal dopamine, its associations with human long-term fear extinction are currently unknown. Here, n = 30/29/28 healthy male Va…
