Feasibility study of defecation studied with a wireless Fecobionics probe in normal subjects.

Several technologies have been developed for assessing anorectal function including the act of defecation. We used a new prototype of the Fecobionics technology, a multi-sensor simulated feces, to visualize defecatory patterns and introduced new metrics for anorectal physiology assessment in normal subjects. Fourteen subjects with normal fecal incontinence and constipation questionnaire scores were studied. The 10-cm-long Fecobionics device provided measurements of axial pressures, orientation, bending, and shape. The Fecobionics bag was distended to the urge-to-defecate level inside rectum wh

Structured medicines reviews in HIV outpatients: a feasibility study (The MOR Study).

OBJECTIVES: Polypharmacy in people living with HIV (PLWH) increases the risks of medicine-related problems (events or circumstances involving drug therapy that actually or potentially interfere with desired health outcomes). We aimed to examine the feasibility and acceptability of a Medicines Management Optimisation Review (MOR) toolkit in HIV outpatients. METHODS: This was a multi-centre randomized controlled study across four HIV centres. In all, 200 PLWH on combination antiretroviral therapy, either > 50 years old or < 50 years with other comorbidities, were enrolled to have a MOR or recei

A pilot feasibility study of awake laryngeal ultrasonography in children.

BACKGROUND: Flexible nasal laryngoscopy is the gold standard examination for laryngeal assessment, but can be uncomfortable, poorly tolerated or even refused by children. Ultrasonography is non-invasive and well-tolerated and could provide an alternative. Data in children, however, are scarce. AIMS: To assess the feasibility of in-office ultrasonography in children for the identification of laryngeal structures using reference imaging planes, and to determine factors influencing examination quality. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A single-center non-interventional prospective pilot feasibility study

Microvascular dysfunction in chronic kidney disease: A feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Microvascular dysfunction contributes to PAD progression, and its detection may facilitate earlier recognition and risk stratification. People with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD) have a high burden of PAD, yet early detection is limited by disease-related changes, such as medial calcification. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a candidate microvascular tool for early PAD detection, but its feasibility in CKD is unknown. PURPOSE: To evaluate NIRS feasibility for assessing lower limb microvascular function in participants with CKD Stage 5 (dialysis and non-dialysis) versus

Lymphatic Drainage in Patients with Heart Failure: A Feasibility Study.

Lymphatic dysfunction contributes to congestion and end-organ damage in heart failure (HF), yet current therapies do not directly target lymphatic congestion. Thoracic duct (TD) drainage offers a novel approach to address this gap. This multicenter feasibility study evaluated the safety and feasibility of minimally invasive TD drainage in patients with HF. Four patients with New York Heart Association class II-IV HF and fluid overload underwent fluoroscopy-guided TD access via cervical, abdominal, or transvenous brachial approaches. Lymph was drained by gravity for up to 3 hours, and hemodynam

Expansion Microscopy of the Enteric Nervous System: A Feasibility Study.

Expansion microscopy (ExM) enables conventional light microscopes to achieve nanoscale resolution by physically enlarging biological specimens. While ExM has been widely applied in neurobiology, it has not been adapted for the enteric nervous system (ENS). Here, we provide a detailed and reproducible protocol for applying ExM to mouse colonic ENS tissue. The procedure includes preparation of the external muscle layers with the myenteric plexus, histochemical staining for NADPH-diaphorase, immunostaining for glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), anchoring of biomolecules, gelation, proteinase

Parkinson's disease cerebrovascular reactivity pattern: A feasibility study.

A mounting body of research points to cerebrovascular dysfunction as a fundamental element in the pathophysiology of Parkinson's disease (PD). In the current feasibility study, blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) MRI was used to measure cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) in response to hypercapnia in 26 PD patients and 16 healthy controls (HC), and aimed to find a multivariate pattern specific to PD. Whole-brain maps of CVR amplitude (i.e., magnitude of response to CO2) and latency (i.e., time to reach maximum amplitude) were computed, which were further analyzed using scaled sub-profile model p

Nerve to subclavius for neurotization procedures: an anatomical feasibility study.

Injuries to the inferior trunk of the brachial plexus and its components can be debilitating. As such injuries are prioritized by surgeons during repair, an additional nerve transfer is considered herein. In the supine position, 13 adult cadavers (26 sides) underwent dissection of the nerve to subclavius and the proximal brachial plexus in the supraclavicular region. Once the nerve was located and isolated from origin to termination, measurements of its length and diameter were made. Next, the C8 and T1 roots and inferior trunk were identified. The distal end of the nerve to subclavius was tra

Hypnotherapy for agoraphobia-Feasibility and efficacy investigated in a pilot study.

UNLABELLED: A number of case studies describing hypnotherapy in the treatment of anxiety disorder patients have already been published. Only a few randomized controlled trials (RCTs) investigated the efficacy of hypnotherapy but focused mainly on symptoms rather than specific mental disorders. The goal of this study was to investigate whether hypnotherapy (HT) was superior to a waitlist control group (WL) in the reduction of agoraphobia-related symptoms. Further goals were to report the feasibility of hypnotherapy as well as attrition and completion rates and detect (epi-)genetic variables, wh
