Multi-omics analysis of fecal microbiota transplantation's impact on functional constipation and comorbid depression and anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Depression and anxiety are common comorbid diseases of constipation. Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) significantly relieves gastrointestinal-related symptoms, but its impact on psychiatric symptoms remains uncharted. METHODS: We collected fecal and serum samples before and after FMT from 4 functional constipation patients with psychiatric symptoms and corresponding donor stool samples. We categorized the samples into two groups: before FMT (Fb) and after FMT (Fa). Parameters associated with constipation, depression, and anxiety symptoms were evaluated. Metagenomics and targ

Impacts of Domestication and Veterinary Treatment on Mobile Genetic Elements and Resistance Genes in Equine Fecal Bacteria.

Antimicrobial resistance in bacteria is a threat to both human and animal health. We aimed to understand the impact of domestication and antimicrobial treatment on the types and numbers of resistant bacteria, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), and class 1 integrons (C1I) in the equine gut microbiome. Antibiotic-resistant fecal bacteria were isolated from wild horses, healthy farm horses, and horses undergoing veterinary treatment, and isolates (9,083 colonies) were screened by PCR for C1I; these were found at frequencies of 9.8% (vet horses), 0.31% (farm horses), and 0.05% (wild horses). Impact of elobixibat on serum and fecal bile acid levels and constipation symptoms in patients with chronic constipation.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Elobixibat is a locally acting inhibitor of the ileal bile acid transporter. We compared bile acid metabolism between healthy subjects and patients with chronic constipation and assessed changes in the bile acid profile after elobixibat administration in the latter group. METHODS: Healthy subjects (n = 10) and patients with chronic constipation (n = 19) were assessed as inpatients for 7 days, during which they received meals containing ~60 g/day of fat. Patients with chronic constipation remained as inpatients for a further 7 days for once-daily elobixibat administration.

Impact of antiplatelet agents and anticoagulants on the performance of fecal immunochemical tests: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Antithrombotic agents may increase the bleeding tendency and affect the performance of fecal immunochemical test (FIT). We aimed to evaluate the impact of antithrombotic agents on the performance of FIT through a systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: All relevant studies published between January 1980 and September 2020 that examined the diagnostic performance of FIT were searched through MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library databases. We performed a meta-analysis for the positive predictive value (PPV) of FIT for detecting advanced colorectal neoplasia (ACRN) or colorect

One-year impact of a bowel management program in treating fecal incontinence in patients with anorectal malformations.

BACKGROUND: Many patients with anorectal malformations (ARM) need a bowel management program (BMP) to manage lifelong problems of fecal incontinence or severe constipation. We aimed to evaluate the sustainability of the results in such a program. METHODS: A single-institution retrospective review was performed in children with ARM who attended our BMP (2015-2019). Standardized definitions and validated tools were used to assess fecal continence (Baylor Continence Scale), constipation (Cleveland Constipation Scoring System), urinary symptoms (Vancouver Symptoms Score), and the Pediatric Qualit

Megacolon and stercoral proctitis after frequent fecal impactions: report of an unusual case and review of the literature.

Persistent megacolon that results from frequent episodes of fecal impaction without adequate treatment is a rare and seldom reported condition in the elderly. This report discusses a 72-year-old white woman presenting with a large abdominal mass, who had at least 4 episodes of radiographically demonstrated fecal impaction over the previous year without adequate treatment. The patient required hospitalization for a bleeding rectal ulcer during the second episode of fecal impaction. Computed tomography (CT) scans on this admission revealed a dilated colon up to 16 x 14 cm in maximal dimensions e…

Impact of Parenteral Ceftiofur on Developmental Dynamics of Early Life Fecal Microbiota and Antibiotic Resistome in Neonatal Lambs.

Background: Early gut microbiome development is critical for neonatal health, and its dysbiosis may impact long-term animal productivity. This study examined the effects of parenteral Ceftiofur Crystalline Free Acid (CCFA) on the composition and diversity of the neonatal lamb fecal microbiome. The emergence of antimicrobial resistance genes associated with CCFA exposure was also investigated. Results: There were distinct microbial populations in the CCFA-treated lambs compared to the control group at each time point, with a highly significant decrease in alpha and beta diversity. The CCFA trea

Investigating the Immunomodulatory Impact of Fecal Bacterial Membrane Vesicles and Their IgA Coating Patterns in Crohn's Disease Patients.

The human intestinal tract contains trillions of bacteria that coexist in a symbiotic relationship with human cells. Imbalances in this interaction can lead to disorders such as Crohn's disease (CD). Bacteria membrane vesicles (MVs), which are released by almost all bacteria, have been demonstrated to play a crucial role in bacteria-host interactions. In this study, we assessed the physical characterizations, immunomodulatory effects, and IgA interactions of MVs derived from fecal samples of CD patients and healthy controls (HCs). MVs were isolated from the frozen fecal samples using a combina

Genetic fecal source identification in urban streams impacted by municipal separate storm sewer system discharges.

Municipal stormwater systems are designed to collect, transport, and discharge precipitation from a defined catchment area into local surface waters. However, these discharges may contain unsafe levels of fecal waste. Paired measurements of Escherichia coli, precipitation, three land use metrics determined by geographic information system (GIS) mapping, and host-associated genetic markers indicative of human (HF183/BacR287 and HumM2), ruminant (Rum2Bac), dog (DG3), and avian (GFD) fecal sources were assessed in 231 urban stream samples impacted by two or more municipal stormwater outfalls. Intestinal Exposure to Ceftiofur and Cefquinome after Intramuscular Treatment and the Impact of Ceftiofur on the Pig Fecal Microbiome and Resistome.

Optimization of antimicrobial treatment during a bacterial infection in livestock requires in-depth knowledge of the impact of antimicrobial therapy on the pathogen and commensal microbiota. Once administered antimicrobials and/or their metabolites are excreted either by the kidneys through urine and/or by the intestinal tract through feces, causing antimicrobial pressure and possibly the emergence of resistance in the gastro-intestinal tract. So far, the excretion of ceftiofur and cefquinome in the intestinal tract of pigs has not been described. The objective of this study was to investigate

All Incontinence is Not Created Equal: Impact of Urinary and Fecal Incontinence on Quality of Life in Adults with Spina Bifida.

PURPOSE: We previously reported that the self-reported amount of urinary incontinence is the main predictor of lower health related quality of life in adults with spina bifida. In this study we sought to determine the impact of fecal incontinence on health related quality of life after correcting for urinary incontinence. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An international sample of adults with spina bifida was surveyed online in 2013 to 2014. We evaluated fecal incontinence in the last 4 weeks using clean intervals (less than 1 day, 1 to 6 days, 1 week or longer, or no fecal incontinence), amount (a lot

Impact of third-generation-cephalosporin administration in hatcheries on fecal Escherichia coli antimicrobial resistance in broilers and layers.

We investigated the impact of the hatchery practice of administering third-generation cephalosporin (3GC) on the selection and persistence of 3GC-resistant Escherichia coli in poultry. We studied 15 3GC-treated (TB) and 15 non-3GC-treated (NTB) broiler flocks and 12 3GC-treated (TL) and 10 non-3GC-treated (NTL) future layer flocks. Fecal samples from each flock were sampled before arrival on the farm (day 0), on day 2, on day 7, and then twice more. E. coli isolates were isolated on MacConkey agar without antibiotics and screened for 3GC resistance, and any 3GC-resistant E. coli isolates were

Clinical impact of fluoroquinolone-resistant Escherichia coli in the fecal flora of hematological patients with neutropenia and levofloxacin prophylaxis.

BACKGROUND: Fluoroquinolone prophylaxis in patients with neutropenia and hematological malignancies is said to be effective on febrile netropenia (FN)-related infection and mortality; however, the emergence of antibiotic resistance has become a concern. Ciprofloxacin and levofloxacin prophylaxis are most commonly recommended. A significant increase in the rate of quinolone-resistant Escherichia coli in fecal flora has been reported following ciprofloxacin prophylaxis. The acquisition of quinolone-resistant E. coli after levofloxacin use has not been evaluated. METHODS: We prospectively examin

Propensity Score-matched Analysis of the Impact of Direct-acting Oral Anticoagulants on Fecal Immunochemical Test Performance.

OBJECTIVES: The fecal immunochemical test (FIT) is widely used for colorectal cancer (CRC) screening, owing to its high diagnostic accuracy. Antithrombotic medications, particularly direct-acting oral anticoagulants (DOACs), can influence FIT performance; however, the evidence concerning this phenomenon remains inconsistent in the literature. This study evaluated the impact of DOACs on the positive predictive value (PPV) of FIT for diagnosing advanced neoplasia (AN). METHODS: This retrospective study, conducted at Mie University Hospital, analyzed 818 patients who underwent colonoscopy proced

Evaluating the Impact of Prophylactic Administration of Ivermectin on the Fecal Microbiome of Healthy C57BL/6J Mice (Mus musculus).

Upon importation, laboratory mice may undergo prophylactic antiparasitic treatment during quarantine to prevent the introduction of parasites into established colonies. While quarantine protocols vary across institutions, ivermectin is commonly used, administered either orally or topically. However, the impact of these practices on the fecal microbiome remains poorly understood, raising concerns about unintended consequences for experimental outcomes. This study investigated the effects of ivermectin on fecal microbiome composition in naïve, healthy male and female C57BL/6J mice. Animals recei
