OBJECTIVE: To determine obstetric variables associated with the long-term prevalence of flatal and/or fecal incontinence among women who sustained obstetric anal sphincter injuries (OASIS).
METHODS: In a retrospective study of women who gave birth between January 1974 and December 1983 at the University Women's Hospital, Tuebingen, Germany, women with OASIS (n=460) were identified on the basis of chart review. Eligible women were recruited to participate in a telephone interview regarding symptoms and their retrospective preference about elective cesarean delivery.
RESULTS: The records of 20

OBJECTIVE: To assess the current treatment of functional nonretentive fecal incontinence, which consists of education, toilet training, and positive motivation.
STUDY DESIGN: Patients, age 6 years and older, referred for fecal incontinence (FI) and diagnosed with functional nonretentive fecal incontinence were eligible candidates. Seventy-one children (76% boys, median age 9.3 years) were randomized to receive conventional therapy (control group) or conventional therapy in addition to daily enemas during 2 weeks. Treatment success was defined as <2 episodes of FI/month without use of enemas.

PURPOSE: Within the recent years several studies have been performed to determine the value of endoanal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in faecal incontinence.
METHODS: MRI is performed using a 0.5-1.5 T unit. A surface coil with a maximum diameter of 19 mm is placed in the anal canal. T2* 3D gradient-echo-sequences and T2-weighted turbo-spin-echo sequences in coronal, axial und sagittal orientation are acquired.
RESULTS: Compared to endoanal ultrasound (EUS), which is the gold standard for diagnosis in faecal incontinence, endoanal MRI is better in visualization of the external sphincter.

OBJECTIVE: The differential impact on quality of life (QOL) that leakage of both stool and flatus confers on women compared with stool only is unclear. Our aim was to characterize differences in symptom distress, impact on QOL, and anorectal testing among women with leakage of stool and flatus, stool only, and flatus only.
METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of women undergoing evaluation of at least monthly bowel incontinence symptoms. Subjects were divided into the following 3 groups: liquid/solid stool and flatus (anal incontinence [AI]), liquid/solid stool only (fecal incontinen

The ability to maintain normal continence for urine and stools is not achievable in all children by a certain age. Gaining control of urinary and fecal continence is a complex process, and not all steps and factors involved are fully understood. While normal development of anatomy and physiology are prerequisites to becoming fully continent, anatomic abnormalities, such as bladder exstrophy, epispadias, ectopic ureters, and neurogenic disturbances that can usually be recognized at birth and cause incontinence, will require specialist treatment, not only to restore continence but also to preser

IMPORTANCE: Stool metabolites influencing gut motility and sensation may contribute to fecal incontinence (FI).
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to test whether FI is associated with higher levels of butyrate and Clostridiales taxa in stool.
STUDY DESIGN: Stool metabolites and microbiota were compared between 96 women with FI and 42 controls. FI frequency and subtype (urgency vs insensible) were measured using a 14-day bowel diary, St. Mark's score, and the Accidental Bowel Leakage questionnaire. Metabolite analysis included targeted analysis (8 short-chain fatty acids including bu

OBJECTIVES: Although community studies have shown no difference between the sexes in the prevalence of fecal incontinence (FI), few direct comparisons of disease characteristics between male and female patients have been reported. The aim of this study was to determine whether characteristics of FI differ between male and female patients in Japan.
METHODS: Included in the study were 408 (149 men, 259 women) patients with FI who visited the Matsushima Hospital Coloproctology Center between October 2016 and September 2017. We retrospectively evaluated data on age, number of bowel movements, Bri

Defecatory disorders including fecal incontinence (FI) are diagnosed on the symptom pattern supplemented by anorectal manometry (ARM), the balloon expulsion test (BET), and endo-anal ultrasonography. In this study, we used a simulated stool named Fecobionics to study distinct defecation patterns in FI patients using preload-afterload diagrams and to provide comparative data on defecation indices (DIs) between passive and urge incontinent patients. All subjects had Fecobionics, endo-anal ultrasonography and ARM-BET done. The Fecobionics bag was distended in rectum until urge in 37 female patien

Fecal incontinence (FI) is a highly prevalent condition known to substantially impair a patient's quality of life. Although a non-invasive treatment option, currently available anal plugs are poorly tolerated, not significantly effective and therefore not often used. We present a new disposable device based on an innovative concept that renews the interest for non-invasive "external" control of bowel content for FI patients. The Contix™ (Forconti Medical Ltd, Cesarea, Israel) permits creation of temporary "artificial" fecal impaction to avoid bowel leakage while inserted high into the "non sen

Scleroderma is a chronic autoimmune disorder involving multiple organs and very commonly the gastrointestinal (GI) system; nevertheless, data on the involvement of the anal sphincter and consequent faecal incontinence (FI) are inadequate. FI in scleroderma was first reported in 1994 by Engel and colleagues, but its impact of added health care costs and declining quality of life (QoL) is poorly determined. Up to 40% of patients with GI involvement complain of FI, however, the quality of data available is poor owing to majority of the studies being retrospective and case reports or series of sma

INTRODUCTION: An antegrade colonic enema (ACE) via an appendicostomy has been shown to be effective in the management of functional bowel problems. In cases with a missing appendix, a neoappendicostomy may be considered.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of clinical outcomes in children who underwent ileal neoappendicostomy for ACE. Medical records were reviewed for data on demography, intra- and postoperative complications. A follow-up questionnaire on stoma problems, ACE-related problems, bowel function, patient satisfaction, well-being, and effect on daily activities was perfor

Loss of anorectal resting pressure due to internal anal sphincter (IAS) dysfunctionality causes uncontrolled fecal soiling and leads to passive fecal incontinence (FI). The study is focused on immediate and long-term safety and potential efficacy of bioengineered IAS BioSphincters to treat passive FI in a clinically relevant large animal model of passive FI. Passive FI was successfully developed in Non-Human Primates (NHPs) model. The implantation of autologous intrinsically innervated functional constructs resolved the fecal soiling, restored the resting pressure and Recto Anal Inhibitory Ref

UNLABELLED: Functional fecal incontinence (FFI) is divided into cases related to functional constipation (FC) and cases without concomitant constipation termed functional non-retentive fecal incontinence (FNRFI). Transanal irrigation (TAI) is widely used in children with neurogenic fecal incontinence but is less studied in children with functional defecation disorders. The aim was to evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of TAI in the treatment of FFI. A retrospective study in 72 children (mean age 9.2 ± 2.2 years, 47 males) with treatment-resistant FFI was performed. All children accepted tre

BACKGROUND/AIM: Patients with fecal incontinence (FI) have lower anal resting (MRP) and squeeze (MSP) pressure and an impaired sensitivity compared to healthy people. However, whether anorectal manometry (ARM) can separate precisely between health and disease is discussed controversially. The aim was to evaluate the accuracy of ARM in a huge cohort of patients and controls.
METHODS: ARM was obtained in 144 controls and in 559 FI patients. MRP, MSP, and balloon volume at first perception (BVP) and urge sensation (BVU) were determined. Receiver operating curve analysis was used to determine opt

We describe the rationale and key aspects for success of a bowel management program for the treatment of pediatric fecal incontinence. A retrospective review was done of the medical strategies used for the treatment of over a 1000 patients with fecal incontinent, combining the experience of the authors' previously published reports (Peña A, Guardino K, Tovilla JM, et al. J Pediatr Surg 1998; 33:133-137 and Bischoff A, Levitt MA, Bauer C, et al. J Pediatr Surg 2009; 44:1278-1284) and additional treated patients after those publications. Emphasis was placed on the review of the key factors neede

Visualisation of the rectum, rectoanal junction and adjacent structures is very demanding and challenging both with technical and medical side. Local staging of rectal and anal tumor and perianal neoplasm by conventional and sibgle slice CT or by barium enema study is not so valuable. These methods can not visualise fistulous communication in inflamatory bowel diseases and have not any role in evaluation of fecal incontinence. During last decade, endoscopic ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging have been recognised as methods of choice in establishing diagnosis of rectal, perirectal, anal
