The presence or absence of fetal breathing movements predicts the outcome of preterm labour.

54 patients admitted to hospital in labour before the 34th week of pregnancy had real-time ultrasonography to establish the presence or absence of fetal breathing movements. In 19 of 20 pregnancies with no detectable fetal breathing, delivery occurred within 48 h whereas in 25 of 34 with fetal breathing on admission, pregnancy continued for a week or more; of the remaining 9, 7 had had spontaneous rupture of the membranes (with amnionitis in 4). If the presence of fetal breathing identifies cases in which preterm labour will subside spontaneously, this sign should be of value both in trials of

[Fetal movement patterns in the external cardiotocography and their interpretation by simultaneous ultrasound observation].

Analysing cardiotocographs not only fetal heart frequency and uterine contractions but also fetal movements have to be considered. Based on this knowledge 96 cardiotocographs are estimated with simultaneous observation by ultrasound. It seems to be possible to conclude from the tocograph pattern to the type of movements.

The role of fetal movements assessment in cases of severe RH immunized patients.

Two cases of severe Rh-immunization are presented. The obstetric history, maternal serum anti-D titre, amniotic fluid spectrophotometric evaluation, amniography and ultrasound placentography suggest the diagnosis of hydrops fetalis. The reduction of fetal movements until cessation in the presence of an audible fetal heart point to a severely distressed fetus and impending death, thus providing additional data confirming the diagnosis of hydrops fetalis. The importance of diagnosed hydrops fetalis lies in the fact that most authors agree that in these cases treatment of the fetus should not be

Fetal movements in utero: nature, assessment, prognostic value, timing of delivery.

Fetal movements in utero are an expression of fetal well-being. However, a sudden increase of fetal movements is a sign of acute fetal distress, such as in cases of cord complications or abruptio placentae. Decreased fetal movements are seen in cases of chronic fetal distress such as preeclampsia, hypertension in pregnancy, etc. It was shown that in these cases a pronounced decrease up to cessation of fetal movements occurred before fetal death in utero while fetal heart beats were still audible for at least 12 hours. This situation was called "movements alarm signal" (MAS). This sign points t

Association between polyhydramnios and decreased fetal movements: A retrospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between polyhydramnios and maternal perception of decreased fetal movements (DFM) and to explore whether a volume-dependent threshold exists for this effect. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 7215 singleton pregnancies (2006-2025). The exposed group comprised 2066 women with polyhydramnios (amniotic fluid index [AFI] >25 cm or maximal vertical pocket >8 cm), and the unexposed group included 5149 women with normal amniotic fluid volume. DFM rates were compared across gestational age groups and polyhydramnios severity. Adjusted odds ratios

Maternal experience of fetal movements from a child with AMC: MECA survey.

OBJECTIVE: The prevailing assumption is that fetal movements are always absent or reduced in pregnancies affected by arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC), leading to the belief that mothers do not perceive or perceive less fetal movements during affected pregnancies. This study aims to investigate the maternal perception of fetal movements in pregnancies with a child diagnosed with AMC and to challenge this assumption. Additionally, it seeks to expand current knowledge on the perception by comparing with pregnancies with children not affected by AMC. METHODS: A survey-based study was cond

The effects of lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic on fetal movement profiles.

PURPOSE: The current study investigated the direct impact of the COVID-19 lockdown on fetal movements, addressing a critical research gap. While previous research has predominantly examined the effects of lockdown on maternal health and postnatal outcomes, little attention has been paid to the direct consequences on fetal well-being as indicated by their movement profile. METHODS: We conducted analysis of movement profiles in 20 healthy fetuses during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown (third national UK lockdown period between January and March 2021) and compared them with 20 healthy fetuses fro

Is it possible to monitor fetal movements with a wearable device? A review of novel technologies.

Stillbirth is often preceded by reduced fetal movements and obstetric intervention is necessitated for stillbirth prevention. Yet, despite fetal movements being one of the few tangible ways a pregnant woman and the clinical team can assess the wellbeing of her baby, there are few validated, objective means for pregnant women to quantify the frequency and nature of an unborn baby's movements. Traditional methods of assessing fetal wellbeing such as cardiotocography and fetal movement charts have a lack of diagnostic accuracy, and often lead to false positive intervention. The need for fetal mov

Risk factors for poor neonatal outcome in pregnancies with decreased fetal movements.

INTRODUCTION: The incidence of Swedish stillbirths has varied little in the past 40 years, with a reported frequency of 400-450 stillbirths/y (approximately 4‰), despite increased information about fetal movement in the media and awareness among healthcare providers. The objectives of this project were to describe the outcome of pregnancies with reduced fetal movement in a Swedish context and to investigate factors associated with poor neonatal outcome in this group. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed at Soder Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden. All single pregnancies a

Reduced fetal movements is twin pregnancies and the association with adverse neonatal outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: Reduced fetal movements (RFM) is an obstetric complaint known to be associated with adverse neonatal outcomes and should serve as an alarming sign in obstetric triage. Whether this assumption holds for twin pregnancies, is still an obstetric enigma, and this complaint is sometimes overlooked in twins. We, therefore, aimed to study neonatal outcomes in twin pregnancies complicated by RFM. We hypothesised that in twin pregnancy, maternal ability to perceive RFM will be limited, and therefore, will not be associated with adverse neonatal outcome. STUDY DESIGN: Included were all dichor

Midwives' and obstetricians' knowledge and management of women presenting with decreased fetal movements.

BACKGROUND: Maternal perception of decreased fetal movements (DFM) affects 5-15% of pregnancies. DFM is associated with intra-uterine fetal death (IUFD) and intra-uterine growth restriction (IUGR). It has been proposed that maternal perception of DFM may be used as a screening tool for IUFD or IUGR. However, this proposal is complicated by variations in definitions and management of DFM. HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesised that uncertainties in the definition and management of women presenting with DFM leads to variation in clinical practice. METHODS: A postal questionnaire was sent to midwives and

Incidence of spontaneous and evoked fetal movements in the first half of twin pregnancy.

Fetal movements (FM) may be spontaneous, originating in the fetus itself, or evoked, caused by external stimuli. The FM in 21 normal twin pregnancies at 10 and 21 weeks of gestation were studied. The percentage rate of evoked FM which occur simultaneously in both twins was 4.96% of all observed FM. The rate of the spontaneous FM which occur independently in each fetus was 95.04% of all FM. The low incidence of evoked FM, at an early gestational age (10-21 weeks) emphasizes the ability of these young fetuses to perceive external stimuli and to react to them by FM.

Association between fetal eye movement density and developmental problems at age 3 years.

In this longitudinal study of 77 pregnant women, we examined how eye movement density (EMD) measured at 34 to 36 weeks’ gestation related to child development at age 3 years, using two developmental assessment tools. Fetal eye movements were recorded for 60 min. Data from 41 children with complete follow-up at age 3 years were analyzed. EMD was calculated as the number of eye movements per minute during periods with eye movement activity, which reflects the active behavioral state considered a precursor to rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. At 3 years, development was assessed using the Kinder In

Correlation study between increased fetal movement during the third trimester and neonatal outcome.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to analyze the correlation between increased fetal movements in the third trimester and neonatal outcomes. METHODS: We enrolled pregnant women (n = 219) who reported increased/excessive fetal movements in the third trimester in our hospital. A control group of healthy women (n = 278) who had undergone regular childbirth and delivery in our hospital during the same period and did not report abnormal fetal movements were also recruited. All pregnant women underwent fetal non-stress test. We analyzed the neonatal weight, appearance, pulse, grimace, activity, and respiration

Awareness of fetal movements and care package to reduce fetal mortality (AFFIRM): a stepped wedge, cluster-randomised trial.

BACKGROUND: 2·6 million pregnancies were estimated to have ended in stillbirth in 2015. The aim of the AFFIRM study was to test the hypothesis that introduction of a reduced fetal movement (RFM), care package for pregnant women and clinicians that increased women's awareness of the need for prompt reporting of RFM and that standardised management, including timely delivery, would alter the incidence of stillbirth. METHODS: This stepped wedge, cluster-randomised trial was done in the UK and Ireland. Participating maternity hospitals were grouped and randomised, using a computer-generated alloc

Prenatal effects of maternal nutritional stress and mental health on the fetal movement profile.

PURPOSE: Prenatal sub-optimal nutrition and exposure to maternal stress, anxiety and depression in pregnancy have been linked to increased postnatal morbidity and mortality. Fetal growth is most vulnerable to maternal dietary deficiencies, such as those evident in hyperemesis gravidarum (HG), early in pregnancy. The purpose of this pilot study was to examine the effects of HG on fetal movement profiles as a measure of fetal healthy development in the 3rd trimester of pregnancy, and to assess whether nutritional stress on the mother can be evaluated using isotopic analysis of hair. METHOD: We

A kick from within--fetal movement counting and the cancelled progress in antenatal care.

Interest for maternal fetal movement counting as a method of screening for fetal well-being boomed during the 1970's and 1980's. Several reports demonstrated that the introduction of counting charts significantly reduced stillbirth rates. However, in 1989, a large study appeared in The Lancet that annihilated research in this field by deeming charts ineffective. In retrospect, it seems evidence was lacking. This review revisits the subject of the significance of fetal movement counting in predicting outcome and reducing stillbirth rates. A structured search was performed to identify studies re
