This case series describes the clinical, imaging, and histological features of 27 lesions diagnosed as a benign fibrous mass not previously described in veterinary literature. The authors propose the name gingival mucoperiosteal fibroma (GMPF) to describe these fibrous lesions found in dogs. Histologically, GMPF is characterized by a lack of odontogenic tissue and various degrees of ossification. GMPFs affect adult dogs with an average age of 95 months (range 24-156 months) and appear as expansile growths with superficial appearance matching the surrounding gingiva. The mandibular incisive reg…

BACKGROUND: Despite the common occurrence of localized gingival enlargements, which often represent reactive lesions, the temporal and spatial association of such a lesion with a central jaw lesion has not been reported. The purpose of this case report is to present the exceptional combination of a peripheral ossifying fibroma and a central odontogenic fibroma. The differential diagnosis and management of each lesion is reviewed.
METHODS: A 45-year-old black female presented with a chief complaint of a painless protuberance in the left mandible of 1-year duration. Clinical and radiographic ex…

Cardiac fibromas are the second most common primary cardiac tumors in childhood. They only rarely present in adults. They are mainly located in the free wall of the ventricles and attached to the interventricular septum. Despite their benign pathology, fibromas in some locations can cause significant complications. This video tutorial illustrates the resection of a septo-apical cardiac fibroma in an asymptomatic 26-year-old woman, diagnosed with transthoracic echocardiography and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging after an abnormal ECG on an occupational medical examination. Surgery was perfor…

Cemento-ossifying fibroma is a benign growth, considered to originate from the periodontal ligament. It is often encapsulated and predominantly located in the mandible, and presents as a slow-growing lesion, but may cause deformity if left untreated. The definitive diagnosis of these lesions requires integration of its clinical, radiological and histological features. We present a case of cemento-ossifying fibroma in relation to the lower left one-third of the face, and its management.

Fibromas are benign tumors that are composed of fibrous or connective tissue. They can grow in all organs, arising from mesenchymal tissue (a type of loose connective tissue). The term "fibroblastic" or "fibromatous" is used to describe tumors like the fibroma. This 69-year-old male presented to us with giant, multiple, very slowly progressive, painless, noninflammatory, soft, trans-illuminant, pedunculated lid swellings with a two decade history. There were no other swellings on the body. He was clinically normal on systemic examination except for the immature cataracts in both eyes. The diag…

There have been only a few cases of desmoplastic fibroma of the spine in the literature and only one of them was purely located on the cervical spine. We report a new patient with the diagnosis of desmoplastic fibroma of the fourth cervical spine. The patient had the complaints of left arm and neck pain. After his radiological evaluation, a mass lesion was found on the left lamina of the fourth cervical spine. Surgical treatment was performed, and the histopathological examination revealed the diagnosis of desmoplastic fibroma. Patients with desmoplastic fibroma of the cervical spine may prese…

Three patients with Gardner's syndrome having benign fibrous proliferations in the soft tissues and the oral cavity are presented. Lesions in all three patients were morphologically different. Two excised lesions in Case 1 were histologically identical to nuchal-type fibroma (NTF) and one lesion in this patient was an epidermal cyst. Case 2 had a lesion located in the soft tissues of the shoulder, which was morphologically similar to NTF and, in addition, contained mildly atypical and multinucleated fibroblastic cells. The oral lesion in Case 3 looked like a fibroma and was morphologically dif…

Ameloblastic fibroma is a rare true mixed tumor of odontogenic origin with both mesenchymal and ectodermal components. It usually arises from the mandibular dentition and presents in the second decade of life. It is a benign slow growing tumor that is less infiltrative than an ameloblastoma but tends to expand bone. It infrequently involves the maxilla and hence the management of these tumors in that region is controversial. The goal of therapy is to avoid cosmetic deformity without compromising on tumor eradication. We present the tenth reported case of this type of tumor in the maxilla, and …

Juvenile ossifying fibroma is a benign, but potentially aggressive, fibro-osseous tumor of the craniofacial bones. The authors describe a case of a mandibular juvenile ossifying fibroma presenting in a 14-year-old boy in conjunction with congenitally missing teeth and review the histology, clinical behavior, and management of these uncommon but disfiguring lesions.

OBJECTIVES: To study retrospectively the long-term outcome after hysteroscopic treatment for intrauterine fibromas.
METHODS: From October 1987 to January 1993, endouterine glycolol resection was performed in 239 patients with intrauterine fibromas. The operation had to be repeated in 39 patients due to incomplete resection or recurrent symptomatology. Patients presented with menometrorrhage, post-menopausal metrorrhage or infertility.
RESULTS: Intra-operative complications were rare, mainly uterine perforations (7 cases) or metabolic syndromes due to reabsorption of glycine (5 cases). Mean f…

A case of fibroma of the spermatic cord is presented. A 26-year-old man was admitted with the complaint of a painless swelling in the left scrotum. On physical examination, the tumor seemed to be in the left spermatic cord. It was removed surgically on May 2, 1983. Microscopic examination of the specimen revealed that the tumor was composed of collagen fibers and fibroblasts. This histological finding was compatible with that of fibroma. Seven cases of fibroma of the spermatic cord so far reported in Japan, including this case, were reviewed.

We report the case of a woman with ossifying fibroma of the right frontoethmoid sinus. Computed tomography and hypocycloidal tomography were useful in identifying the lesion and its extension into the intracranial and intraorbital cavity.

An unusual case of the ossifying fibroma of a 54-year-old woman is reported. Clinically the lesion appeared as an exophytic mass on the hard palate and apparently originated outside of bone. Histologically the resected tumor is well encapsulated and made up of a richly cellular fibroblastic stroma containing foci of mature bone with a predominantly lamellar structure. While the possibility exists that the lesion is reactive, it appears to be a true neoplastic growth and a purely soft tissue process arising from the periosteum of the palate. Thus, we proposed the term periosteal ossifying fibro…

An interesting case of cementifying fibroma of the ethmoidal sinus is presented. This benign tumour, in this unusual site, tends to behave in an aggressive manner and radical surgery is necessary. Recurrence is frequent.

Ossifying fibromas involving the tibia were seen in two patients. In both patients, the radiographic appearance of the lesions suggested fibrous dysplasia, but histopathologic evaluation demonstrated findings similar to ossifying fibroma of the mandible and facial bones. Radiologic and pathologic recognition of this entity is necessary for proper treatment.
