Public opinion about financial incentives for smoking cessation.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to assess public support for a smoking cessation policy involving financial incentives. METHODS: We conducted a randomized controlled trial using an experimental survey design. One of four questionnaire versions was distributed to participants. Each version described a smoking cessation treatment costing $750 per success, including an unspecified treatment, medication, or financial incentive paid to the smoker. Participants indicated whether they would support a $25 increase in their annual health insurance premium to pay for the treatment. Questionnaires w

Financial Status and Well-being in Recently Separated Military Veterans.

INTRODUCTION: Veterans transitioning from military service to civilian life manage numerous changes simultaneously, in health, employment, social relationships, and finances. Financial problems may impact financial well-being as well as adjustment to civilian life in general; yet, research on Veterans' financial challenges remains limited. This study examined six indicators of perceived financial status among newly transitioned Veterans over a period of 3 years and then examined perceived financial well-being measured in two domains-satisfaction and functioning-and difficulty adjusting to civi

Parental expectations at the time of childhood cancer diagnosis: Development and pilot testing of a structured assessment tool in India.

BACKGROUND: Parents of children newly diagnosed with cancer develop expectations about treatment, support, and financial challenges, influencing coping and communication. Validated tools to measure these expectations in low- and middle-income settings are limited. METHODS: This cross-sectional pilot study was conducted in a pediatric oncology center in India. A 20-item, expert-validated questionnaire covering five domains-Treatment and Prognosis, Facility Support, Financial Support, Psychosocial Support, and Spiritual Support-was administered to 30 parents of children under 14 years at diagno…

Improving outcomes of patients with advanced prostate cancer through a better understanding of clinical factors contributing to financial toxicity: a qualitative study.

PURPOSE: Patients with advanced prostate cancer (aPC) often face significant treatment-related financial hardship. Given the critical role non-physician clinicians play in helping patients access prescribed treatments, we sought to explore their perspectives on factors contributing to treatment-related financial toxicity. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews with non-physician clinicians who care for patients with aPC. We used purposive sampling to capture diverse perspectives across practice types (academic, community), and settings (rural, urban, suburban). Participants describe

Visitor reaction to pacing behavior: influence on the perception of animal care and interest in supporting zoological institutions.

Many publications within the field of zoo animal welfare have stated the importance of decreasing stereotypic behavior (e.g., pacing) to help ensure a positive visitor experience. The idea behind these statements is that visitors want to see animals engaged in natural behavior. Additionally, it is thought that watching an animal exhibit species-appropriate behavior could help increase a visitor's connection to wildlife and ultimately their interest in conservation. However, until recently, no information was available to validate such statements. The purpose of this research was to examine peo

Cancer treatment-related financial toxicity in Japan: a scoping review.

Financial toxicity during cancer survival has been studied mainly in the United States; 47-49% of cancer survivors reported financial hardships and 12-63% reported debt owing to treatment costs. Financial toxicity is influenced by each country's economic status and healthcare system. We aimed to review the evidence on financial toxicity in Japan. A systematic search was performed using PubMed and Ichushi databases. We included English or Japanese peer-reviewed articles that (1) explored the experiences of cancer patients facing financial toxicity due to cancer diagnosis and treatment, (2) were

Financial technologies (FinTech) for mental health: The potential of objective financial data to better understand the relationships between financial behavior and mental health.

Financial stability is a key challenge for individuals with mental illnesses. Symptomatic periods often manifest in poor financial decision-making including compulsive spending and risky behaviors. This article explores research opportunities and challenges in developing financial technologies (FinTech) to support individuals with mental health. Specifically, we focus on how objective financial data might lead to novel mental health assessment and intervention methods. We have used data from one individual with bipolar disorder (BD) (i.e., an N = 1 case study) to illustrate feasibility of coll

Financial distress/well-being and living situation in Ecuadorian health workers.

The tendency to live alone is a relatively recent phenomenon in Ecuador, but it is expanding rapidly. This study aims to identify factors associated with financial distress/well-being according to living situation (living alone vs. living with a partner) in Ecuadorian health workers. This study examined the construct of financial distress/well-being in a sample of 800 Ecuadorian health workers using cross-sectional data. Living situation was compared using generalized linear model analyses including income, age, children living at home, self-perception of health, depression, anxiety and stress

Social Integration, Social Support and Incident Type 2 Diabetes: Results from the Prospective Heinz Nixdorf Recall Cohort Study.

Some evidence of mediation was found for limited financial support (14% (95% CI: -7%, 35%) for the income-diabetes association). Th …

Comfort discussing financial challenges and accessing resources in cystic fibrosis care among people with cystic fibrosis and their care partners: A cross-sectional survey study.

BACKGROUND: People with cystic fibrosis (PwCF) face considerable financial burdens. PwCF who are most likely to make financial and healthcare tradeoffs, had the lowest comfort discussing financial issues with their CF team. The association of comfort with financial discussions and accessing resources is unknown. Our study assessed the relationship between comfort discussing financial issues with the CF care team and PwCF accessing resources. METHODS: We evaluated responses of adults with CF, parents/guardians of children with CF, and spouses/partners/guardians of PwCF from the 2024 COST-CF su

Financial Toxicity During Breast Cancer Treatment: A Qualitative Analysis to Inform Strategies for Mitigation.

PURPOSE: Financial toxicity from cancer treatment is a growing concern. Its impact on patients requires refining our understanding of this phenomenon. We sought to characterize patients' experiences of financial toxicity in the context of an established framework to identify knowledge gaps and strategies for mitigation. METHODS: Semistructured interviews with patients with breast cancer who received financial aid from a philanthropic organization during treatment were conducted from February to May 2020. Interviews were transcribed and coded until thematic saturation was reached, and findings

How much choice is there in housing choice vouchers? Neighborhood risk and free market rental housing accessibility for active drug users in Hartford, Connecticut.

BACKGROUND: Since the mid-1970s, the dominant model for U.S. federal housing policy has shifted from unit-based programs to tenant based vouchers and certificates, intended to allow recipients a choice in their housing and neighborhoods. Surprisingly little research has examined the question of where those with Section 8 housing vouchers are able to live, but some research suggests that voucher holders are more likely to reside in distressed neighborhoods than unsubsidized renter households. Further, federal housing policy has limited drug users' access to housing subsidies. In turn, neighborh

Financial perceptions and subjective well-being among older adults.

OBJECTIVE: To examine how subjective financial well-being (SFWB) relates to subjective well-being (SWB) among older adults in the U.S. Beyond material resources, SFWB reflects perceptions of present and future security, stability, and freedom of choice. This study tested whether hopelessness mediates the SFWB-SWB relationship and whether perceived social support, both positive (PSS) and negative (NSS), moderates this pathway. METHODS: Data came from 4,570 respondents (Mean age = 69; 56% female) in the Health and Retirement Study, a nationally representative panel survey of U.S. adults over ag

Military-to-Civilian Transition Stressors Associated With Couples' Intimate Partner Violence.

OBJECTIVE: Higher rates of intimate partner violence (IPV) have been documented among veterans, compared to those who are currently serving. However, no known studies have examined associations between IPV and transition-related stressors among couples who have recently separated from military service. This study aimed to address this gap by examining associations between military status, transition-related stressors, and IPV. METHOD: Using survey data from the Millennium Cohort Family Study, we examined associations between U.S. service members' military status (currently serving: n = 1,581;
